GE 12 Cylinder FDL Load Test - The Universal Series

  • During mechanical session we load tested our former Georgia Central/Norfolk Southern/Southern Railway GE U-23B #3965. I took advantage of this to record the audio from it. You can hear as the load picks up the engine exhaust gets louder gradually. The load is routed through the grid resistors for the dynamic brake to have self load. We run through all 8 notches of throttle in this audio. Enjoy!

    Beautiful 7FDL mechanical music! One of the best-sounding GE engines I've ever heard, and boy howdy have I heard a lot of them. Very reminiscent of a GEVO-12 at high rpm's, but GE four-strokes fire similarly, and both sounds great. But nothing beats the classics, those U-boats were some cool locos. The U-boats were way before my time. I'm glad a select few remain out here. Thanks for sharing this load test of one's prime mover!

    • @NSAaron
      @NSAaron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The FDL prime mover went through a series of upgrades from what you hear in a U-Boat/Dash-7 to a Dash9 class unit. I believe on a newer FDL the exhaust has two manifolds coming from the power assemblies while an older one has only one. This would increase the volume of exhaust noise tremendously. A newer FDL uses electronic fuel injection rather than mechanical. The humming noise you mentioned might be the electric fan for the radiators. Older FDL's had all of their auxiliary appliances (Traction motor blower, air compressor, and radiator cooling fan) mechanically driven from the engine. Newer FDL's have all of these appliances driven by an AC electric motor which is powered from a companion alternator attached to the same rotor as the main traction generator.

    This reminds me of rail fanning on Conrail's Boston Line. On the weekends they would take the U23B?B23-7s from all the locals at outlying points in Massachusetts and run them together on a road job back to Selkirk for service. 4-5 of them made quite a sound climbing over the Berkshires.

    I love that sound. I recall it when I was a boy at the age of 10 in 1963, when I saw the new Alco C-420 locomotives delivered to the LIRR (Long Island Railroad). They used the Alco V12 series 251 engines, 4-stroke cycle design as well, they were very smokey on acceleration from a stand still which was quite impressive, I even like the odor of the exhaust! My Dad took me to the LIRR station in Mineola, NY back in the very early to mid 1960's. We even saw the final service days of my favorite locomotive, the Fairbanks-Morse model CPA24-5 Consolidated Line of locomotive with the 12 cylinder in-line opposed piston diesel engine, unforgettable and fond memories of those F-M locomotives, the LIRR had five (5) of these 2,400 HP cab units, good times they were!!

    Why does it sound like one cylinder is louder than the rest? I do like the fact, that it's a turbo-charged 4-Stroke, much more fuel efficient than the super-charged 2-Stroke engines.

    • @A9106

      I think it is because of exhaust gas pulse synchronicity, of some sort. Whether it is by design ("pulsed exhaust") or accident, I don't know.

    • @TheSilverShadow17

      2 strokes have the power advantage overall, plus they're simpler in design. Thermal efficiency is where they excel as well averaging upwards of 50 percent.
