  • This is the self load testing of the very last General Electric U23B "U-boat" (universal series) locomotive to be built. The location is the Railroad Museum of New England's Thomaston Volunteer Shop. Visit rmne.org for more information on the collection as well as schedules and upcoming events.

A sound like no other. Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories of Burlington Northern U-Boats in the 70s and 80s.

Here in Mexico we still having some U23B in service; some U23B are in service on the short line LFCD (Linea Ferrocarril Coahuila-Durango) and these are High hood units (Ex NS/SOU); some other U23B are in service on the BPMX (Business Parts of Mexico) leasing company, some of them are ex NS/SOU units and some other are ex NERR. Greetings from Ciudad Juarez🇲🇽✌

Love this video. I miss the old U-Boats. There was nothing like seeing or hearing 4 or 5 of them together on the R&N being really worked. If you ever do this again can you make a longer video and work up one notch at a time? I'd love to hear it working up through the notches. Thanks for sharing!

Just wanted to add to the conversation that General Electric did produce the U11B in 1979-1980 that were sold to Costa Rica Fecosa railroad. Some of those are still in operation.

Very nice! Self-load testing the locomotive is possible because it has dynamic brakes, which dissipate the electrical energy being generated, as heat (through resistance grids, much like a toaster element!).

I loved it! Thanks for making this interesting video. I'm surprised by 2 things though, first that the unit has a turbo boost gauge, and that it's only showing 12 psi at that throttle setting. I would've expected at least 2 to 3 times that pressure. Interesting none-the-less.

+eSPeeScotty I don't think I've ever seen more on the gauge than that. Then again, we really don't spool her up that high all that much. That may change here pretty soon. We've got a construction debris recycling contract in the works. Gonna be some heavy consists.

+Arthur Stillwell Oh, that will be neat. I hope someone will take their camera along and catch some of those beautiful U-boat sights and sounds....and possibly even a shot of the boost gauge of that hard working unit.

+eSPeeScotty We ran her on the self load test box yesterday and noted the turbo air pressure at 25 psi in Run 8.

+Arthur Stillwell Great! That is more in the area that I would expect to see from a hard working engine. I wonder if Run 8 on the road with a heavy train would cause even greater boost pressure than can be induced with the load test box? Thank you for keeping me in mind and updating me on the new test findings. That kind of thing is very interesting to me. Also, just as I watched the video again today, I noticed something that caused me to do a little research. She was built with AAR Type-B trucks, but at some point between 1995 and 1999 while on the P&W, she was converted to GE FB-2 trucks. Thanks again for the update.

That's correct. She was re-trucked during her time with P&W. The original trucks rode better, but were not as easy to maintain as the FB-2s. She is a rough rider.

What's with the peculiar vent stack on the roof behind the air intakes?

The Railroad Museum of New England/Naugatuck Railroad in Thomaston, CT owns and operates her. The organization is a volunteer operation and we are always looking for members. Visit rmne.org for more information.

Yeah, they have an entire page dedicated to this loco! It was initially bought by Conrail, numbered #2798.
