Hey Zack, it was great meeting you and I'm glad you enjoyed driving my pride and joy - you might get a kick out of the fact that I had to send her right back to the mechanic the very next day, haha! (not your fault) Thanks for coming down to review her!
Nice car! I have one in the exact same color and year! If you don’t mind me asking, what did you replace your differential with? Mine is starting to howl when going at highway speeds.
Sweet. Mine's an 83 L-type. But with a 7MGE for that extra oomph. Also has a 5 speed, LSD and the 8 way seats. My diff too makes a mild howl between 70 and 90 mph. Really quiet above and below those speeds. Curious to know what diff you're using.
@@Tomcat115 Thanks! Well, with the noise I would first replace the carrier and pinion bearings, but if you wanna go ahead and replace the whole carrier, I'm using a Detroit Tru-trac helical gear LSD that is 'supposed' to be in a 4runner, turns out the 7.5" diff is the same between the cars, the only issue is that the CV axles don't quite reach in far enough and I had to send the carrier to a machinist to remove a little bit of material to allow the axles to properly "snap" in, else you run the risk of them leaking everywhere or potentially popping all the way out.
@@jde4866 I see. Thank you! I’m not gonna replace it right away. I’m probably gonna try to fix it first, but I just wanted to know my options in case I do replace it in the future. Anyways, thanks again for the advice!
Everybody reviewing the mk 2 Supra always miss the two most interesting 80’s features. The trouble light under the hood on the passenger side and my favourite the built-in light in the centre console attached to the phone cord.
Under hood light is great but putting it back is always horrible. I still don't have an idea how to coil the cable back properly. Despite this it's a very cool thing to have.
The ashtray is long because that is where everyone put their tire pressure Guage. Notice alot of interior plastics turned to dust. The best thing about the Supra is the configuration, that is the layout. Inline dohc 6 cylinder, edging its way up to 3 litres, 5 speed manual, heavy clutch, LSD rear end, GT coupe with outstanding reliability, quality construction and easy to service. If you bought a white P Supra, you could pretend you were driving the Lotus Esprit from James Bond - Spy Who Loved Me.
One thing that was not shown but a cool fact is the rear washer fluid bag. On the passenger side in the truck area, remove the panel and there is another small panel that pulls out. Once that is removed you will see a plastic/rubber bag that is for the rear wiper washer (this car has the wiper removed). The nifty thing is the small panel that is removed to access this bag is used to fill the bag.
My Aunt bought a new one in 1983 and my Mom got a Celica GT-S notch back new the same year. They were fun to drive on winding curvy roads as they handled so well, but that six cylinder was definitely more fun.
the design of this car, on the exterior, always struck me as a Picasso painting. a puzzle put together of funky pieces with sharp edges still cool though
I have an 85 Celica and I agree about about the driving experience. It’s so analog and also so easy at the same time. And I am always floored at just how comfortable the driver seat is. FYI. Those of us that have Celicas call the emblem a dragon.
One of the hottest cars of the 80's point blank. Not a major speed of handling demon but attitude for fucking years. this car IS 1980's at its cocaine fueled finest! My fav parts? Fender flares and those WHEELS, deep concave, bad ass. The front coming at u in your rear view tells u to get out of the way. The stereo was also a serious fav of mine because the Japanese were just wayyy ahead of audio than any other vountry. I LOVE THIS CAR!
I love that car. My wife (who just started watching these) informed me the other day that my 2016 Toyota Carolla Sport would fail the 'big friggin bottle test'!
I've got an 82 supra. It's got the 85mph speedometer, the antenna in the windshield, and the badges that just say "Supra" under the dragon. I love driving mine all over the place.
Love this car. I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking how cool it looked. Josh, what a good looking car! Thanks for letting him review it. Zach, I don't think you like it, but I do get that Chris Farley feeling that makes me smile every time you do one.
A bought a MK3 Supra last year, absolutely in love with it and making it look it's best has been a massive undertaking. I love driving her so much that these Celica Supras must be a ton of fun to cruise in. Both gens look absolutely stunning.
I was crazy about those cars in the 80s. I had a red 83 sport/5 speed with black leather but my favorite one was a black 84 sport 5 speed with cloth interior... it was mint with only 40K miles when I bought it. The 84 had some nice upgrades both for interior and exterior, plus 10 more horsepower. I kept that one for 5 years and then found a beautiful show room looking burgandy 86 (not the 86 1/2) with gray leather seats... still the sport version but this one had an automatic which I wasn't as crazy about. All of them had sun roofs which I really enjoyed. I drag raced the black 84 and it ran a best of 16:30 at 84 mph which wasn't too bad for the 80s. I was worried about breaking the rear end if I launched it too hard but it held up ok. The main thing is they looked as good as they drove which was great!!
Love the feel of the suspension in the p-type; it was actually touted as being Lotus-tuned suspension. Definitely has body roll but still manages to feel firmly planted.
The MR2 and the Corolla FX of all things also benefited from Lotus suspension design. I had a Corolla FX with the 4AC, total base model, pretty much gutless. But I shamed more than one sports car owner on winding mountain roads by staying in their rearview until the brakes faded, because the FX was just tossable. Turn the wheel and it will obey, it will stick, and it will stay square. And after all, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow.
Awesome car. I wish I had one. In Australia when I grew up in the 80s the Celica of this shape got pretty popular. As far as I know Australia didn't get this Supra version as I never saw one.
Interestingly, the only other Mk 2 Supra other than my Canadian one that I’ve seen that had the rims in black was a right hand drive Australian one. Huh! Always thought a previous owner painted them.
My dream car and also since recently, my own car! Mine is a red EU spec with 5M-GE. Can wait to get it on the road, but it's getting little closer by each day. Amazing review, very close to my heart.
You should give an 84/85 RA64/RA65 Celica GT or GTS to compare the two. The 84 and 85 are the ones with EFI, and are the ones you want. And the GTS has the independent rear, 4 wheel vented disk brakes, and 3.90 rear gearing compared to the 3.42 rear. Another quick thing, the Celica and Supra badge is supposed to be a viking ship or longboat. The name Celica means "of the stars" or "heavenly" so it's like a space-ship of sorts. At least that my interpretation of the two. I own two kouki RA65 Celicas, and they're absolutely great. Would love to see a review comparing them against an MA61 Supra.
Owned an 84 seven years traded it in for a 91 legend coupe. Both were tied for the best cars I ever owned and that excludes my 97 NSX which is great. You did a nice review. Only criticism is you saying it's not fast. Your too young to realize what was around back then for the money. This car gave you better fun performance than all the American junk running around and killer quality
My 85 l-type with all the p-type options had a full size spare that was the alloy that matched the rest of the wheels I always thought that was pretty cool! And the power door locks button was up with the windows on mine the front switch behind the gear shift with the fog light switch and the middle one was a coin tray and the rear one was the rear wipers on this one so what either didn't have a power lock button or it didn't have the fog light or rear wiper switch in the same location. I got a fog light switch out of another Celica and placed it in the center rectangle cut out where the change holder was and wired it to the brake lights so I could turn the brake lights off and go into stealth mode 😎
My 83 P Type has been down for the count for over a year now and seeing a fresh Mk2 video really helps me reaffirm my love for Mk2s. They're not fast at all, but super engaging and all analog. The steering has a nice weight to it and as somebody else said, they roll a bit in bends, but never get bend out of shape.
I had an 83 Celica GTS non Hatch. Loved that car, but always wanted a Supra. Those P type seats always adjusted to me perfect. My Celica 22R was so worn out, I'd love to drive a fresh rebuild.
The seats in this thing and the MKIII Supra are no doubt some of the best car seats ever made and they look amazing too. I'm a big enough dork with my MKIII that I almost want an MKII now as well, but I spent SO much money and time fixing up my MKIII that I don't think I could take anymore lol.
As a kid in the 80's, my uncle got one in Black, he took it to a tuning company in Switzerland. They changed the engine for a 3.0L inline 6 and added turbo as well. Crazy fast for its time. He also had the iconic MR2 MK1 , actually two , because he crashed the first one while chasing a car thief who stole his Toyota Starlet.
I remember when my grandmother bought a white 1985 Supra brand new. At the time, as a 5 year old I thought it was so cool because to me it resembled a space ship.
The only new car my mom ever bought was a 77' Celica. Not even knowing this in the summer of 2021, I picked up an MKIII Supra and it's the just the best car I've ever seen or driven. I don't even care that it's heavy and not that fast, she looks so good and is so well made compared to modern cars. It's all I want to modernize now and keep forever.
I wanted one of these SOO bad when they came out -but I was in high school and of the, eh-hem, where kids either bought their own first heap or Mom got something new(er) and Jr. was awarded the 72 Torino. (I bought a Honda with fender rust and an oil consumption problem - hey just throw a couple cans of .69/quart rite aid ol in the hatch.....) These things weren't fastest on the block (decent for the era though) but they exuded sophistication and handled very, very well for the day. But then along came the 86 RX-7...
"That inline six appeal of (*hand motion*) you know what I mean?" Me, owning two inline six cars: "Not very articulate but... Yeah I do know what you mean" They aren't peaky, the torque comes in smoothly and strong, they just make an amazing sound, are happy at any rev, are unbelievably smooth as the revs climb. V6's tend to have a fat midrange power bump and fall off. Flat sixes tend to need some revs to get their juices going. Inline sixes just have this always ready and always willing feeling. A bizzare combination of high rotating mass because of the long crankshaft and paradoxical zippiness despite the long crankshaft.
honestly, the main reason i want this car is because its RWD, ive found one parked near a friend of mine for sale, gonna look at it tomorrow, claims 70k miles, so if its a stick, i may just buy then and there, given that its an inline 6, it can be daily driven as well, being that these things are known to last if taken care of, definitely ready to get a look at her!
I like the 2nd generation Supra , but you know what I want to see a review of, the 1st generation Supra and the Camry Celica those are the ultimate finds
"Brown era", haha, I like that. Pretty accurate. I miss boxy cars. I had an acquaintance with a Mk I when I was in high school, but never had a ride in it. I don't suppose there are many of those around, but that would be a treat to see reviewed.
I turned 16 in 1983 and this was my dream car throughout its entire production run from '82 to '86. Back then, I would've taken the Supra over the Camaro, Mustang, 280/300ZX, and RX-7 without hesitation. The Supra didn't put up the best performance numbers, but nothing...and I mean NOTHING...looked better in my opinion. That car was simply the most aggressive and gorgeous looking thing on the road as far as I was concerned. I love the look still to this day.
I've never seen a Speedometer cluster in one of those cars go to 140. All the ones I've seen only go to 130 and have a pin to stop the needle from running into the oil pressure gauge. I'd like to find one of those for my MK2 Supra. Since the 2JZGTE swap I did...it will rip all the way to 140 easy. Have a look at my channel if ya wanna see the car.
Hey, I know this is a sorta old comment, but I'm curious. Was the engine swap very difficult in this model? I've really become drawn to these cars for their simplicity over more modern stuff, but I don't love their stock power figures.
@@eljefeamericano4308 It was quite challenging to do if you build it with a 2JZGTE and to the stock appearing look as mine. I will publish more build videos of mine in the future so hit that subscribe button on my channel to see more.
It's one of those cars that's both memorable and easy to forget about because most of them have been wrapped around telephone poles. You don't really see them in the wild any more.
This and the A70 are horrendously underrated. Refreshed suspension and bushings goes a long way. Fun to drive, cheap and easily swappable for JZ's and UZ/s Edit: Toyota's badges are very interesting across the JDM models. Each model had their own badge, my favorites being the Mark II/Cresta, Celica Supra, and crown
The original badges on the A70 before the refresh look absolutely amazing. Some people don't even know what the car is because it's not exactly obvious from the front.
A while ago I had an 84 mk2 supra, fitted a modified 1JZ with sequential turbos from a soarer, end result was a very quick car. 427KW at the treads with a weight of 1300kgs. 10sec quarter mile. I ended up selling it but nowadays I wish I kept it.
I've owned two 1984 celica supra's P-type 5spd and to this day, I regret selling them. I've had mustangs, firebirds, trans am's, nova's, and camaro's. Nothing comes close, was it fast.... no, but it was fun!! Its a drivers car for sure. Even my two MK3's wasn't as fun, and one was turbo! Tell him to never sell it, ever, or he'll regret it!!!
Not bad for the US market. Emissions really choked performance out of these with catalytic converters, low compression and wrong spark plugs. . The European and Japanese versions made 170hp. In 1984 some revisions gave the US version 160 hp, but by then the EU version was making 182hp. I installed a 200 hp 7MGE in my 83 Supra. Feels fantastic as these things are pretty light.
Hey Zach, your channel is big enough to have Telegram scammers pretending to be you claiming we won a prize. Congratulations, I guess. Time for the ban hammer. Cool looking car. I saw three of these at a car show for the first time and I was amazed how good they look. These look awesome with fender flares.
These made the 280ZX seem obsolete. These were sold as soon as they were unloaded like RX7's & Accords for MSRP plus $$$ Same year i bought a 1982 Scirocco for $10,500
It's funny because the 300ZX I supposed one-up'd the MKIII supra. My brother actually has one, but I wasn't into cars at the time and now I own a very nice MKIII. I don't think the MKIII (A70) was really designed to compete with anything but the Z car, but with all that peeled away it's one of the best looking cars IMO on the road. Sadly they are very heavy cars even with the more than modest engine power boost.
I was so close to buying one of those in 98 for 2 grand. Didn't like the color. It was like an Easter m&m green. Came back with the cash and it was sold.
This was the car I learned how to drive stick on. Its a vehicle that I plan to own again. Previous one was stolen by a murderous person who went on a killing spree. They sold my car to someone for quick cash as they were fleeing. Never saw it again.

Damn what’s a beautiful machine. This car is one of my all time favorites, wish there was more around still
I had an 83 corolla sr5. I loved it. obviously not as powerful as this, but still very fun!
I had the same exact same car, it was a very fun drive.
I just love this model. Its the best Supra ever. Tq so much for the review of this supercar.
oh, man my old car! i had an 82 and completely ragged it out. i was in high school and it had a hard life with me behind the wheel
I wanted one so bad when I was in high school. hahaha! Blast from the past!
My first car. What a fun ride!
This is my all time favorite Supra.
Awesome man
I've never seen a Speedometer cluster in one of those cars go to 140.
@@watchesandwheels2093 Sounds good! Thanks for the reply!
Wow. So surprised to see this car, almost forgot about it. I loved this car as a kid, though is was so cool. Great review.
It's one of those cars that's both memorable and easy to forget about because most of them have been wrapped around telephone poles. You don't really see them in the wild any more.
This and the A70 are horrendously underrated. Refreshed suspension and bushings goes a long way. Fun to drive, cheap and easily swappable for JZ's and UZ/s
Edit: Toyota's badges are very interesting across the JDM models.
My '82 P type went 225K miles, never let me down.
This guy get it! Subscribed!!
that little spare tire cover hood prop is ingenious.
There's not ANY ONE of these MK2s I've not seen without the track-look rubbers. I WISH
I had a jet black 1985 Celica GTS. They are the best on the highway nothing comes close
Pop up lights! Yaaaas. 150 HP was pretty fast for 1983 wasn't it?
Not bad for the US market. Emissions really choked performance out of these with catalytic converters, low compression and wrong spark plugs. . The European and Japanese versions made 170hp. In 1984 some revisions gave the US version 160 hp, but by then the EU version was making 182hp. I installed a 200 hp 7MGE in my 83 Supra. Feels fantastic as these things are pretty light.
@@alphamaledriveshard Wow that's awesome, thanks for sharing. Do you have videos?

Check this out bro.
i've owned 3 inline 6 vehicles. like their power delivery, like a very smooth satisfying bowel movement.
Hi there, would you do a review on a Nissan 280zx, if you can. 👍
im yet to drive or own one of these. the question is one of these or a z31?
This
8:10 gold
Hey Zach, your channel is big enough to have Telegram scammers pretending to be you claiming we won a prize. Congratulations, I guess. Time for the ban hammer.
Cool looking car. I saw three of these at a car show for the first time and I was amazed how good they look. These look awesome with fender flares.
I did not know that the Supra name started as a trim package.
I love my 85 P type
Looks nice for the time
Loved the car review. Gopros are overrated, overpriced and becoming notorious for overheating themselves. Thanks for the Mark II Supra review!
did this car come from nj,,,i think this was my friends old car..
These made the 280ZX seem obsolete.
These were sold as soon as they were unloaded like RX7's & Accords for MSRP plus $$$
Same year i bought a 1982 Scirocco for $10,500
It's funny because the 300ZX I supposed one-up'd the MKIII supra.
There's a silver in the backlot of a dealer near me
You don’t have, there is!!
I was so close to buying one of those in 98 for 2 grand. Didn't like the color. It was like an Easter m&m green. Came back with the cash and it was sold.
My dad think the AE86 Trueno is THIS!
If i didn’t get a z31 I was gunna get one of these
This was the car I learned how to drive stick on. Its a vehicle that I plan to own again. Previous one was stolen by a murderous person who went on a killing spree. They sold my car to someone for quick cash as they were fleeing. Never saw it again.
I think the HP is 178, I never saw it with 140mph on the cluster, they asually have 85 mph or 130 mph....
Yeah mines is a 1983 and has the 80 mph dash
