I love this - I just got a puppy, too, and I so identify with that exhaustion. Freya is so lucky to have such dedicated training. She will be a lovely well-behaved adult dog, which everyone will be so grateful for. 🥰
Hello there, a tip for bathing a dog: you can put a towel or something similar at the bottom of the bathtub, this makes their legs not slip and makes the puppy feel more confident.
My tip for bathing in tub and at the same time getting her used to water and swimming: start with just a little bit of water in the tub, just enough so her feet get wet. After some 5 or more baths, when she got used to that level of water, add a little more. Do this routine, adding a bit more sometime after she's used to it, until she is fine with being half-submerged in. Like this you get to give chill baths and a dog confident to try swimming. ❤ I did this with my mutt who is just a little bigger than Freja as a puppy, and now she swims happily after my mom, likes to play with tennis balls in the water, all that jazz!
My one and only dog was a workline German Shepherd, a retiree from the Sheriff's Department in fact, my ex's work dog turned family dog. He was the most amazing dog, friend, family member. He protected me on more than one occasion and didn't leave my side during the difficult months following my divorce. He was my rock and my best friend, truly. I'm really happy that I've found someone so responsible in choosing and training puppy like you two♥️ It looks like Freja is from amazing breeder, where she was perfectly socialize, which unfortunataly isn't that common. I would like to get you some advices that might help your. I don't know how much time you train with her but with puppies is always better when you train just 2-3 minutes let's say 3 times a day. Puppies get tired more easily than adult dogs and when you make the training short and funny they'll be more excited to the next one. You shoul avoid getting to the point when you end the lesson becouse the pup is tired and doesn't want to continue. Also giving her few days in a week when there would be no training, just walk, sniffing, playing etc. could speed her progress as well. With the recall I would choose one form of her name, that you'll be using only for recall. After calling her name is good when you make yourself looking interesting for the dog. I look like an idiot when I recall mine, but it works😂 So I run away from the dog, move from side to side, clapp with my hands, make funny noises etc. Of course after some time you can just call and she'll come but when she is not paying attention to you, to behave like psychopat is good choice😂 Also when you start learning behaviour in new place is always good when at first the dog had the opportunity to explore where he is and than you must lower your critteria for behaviour. So as you said, at home you train sit, lay Down but when you'll come outside you will at first reward her just for looking at you. Also in different places you should use rewards of different value. At home her normal food. On the garden better treats and when you're in the streets something really special like dry meat. I hope some of this will help you. Freja is really amazing dog. Distractions are good! We made that mistake with our Aussiedoodle, she will “place” great and stay for almost an hour until there’s a distraction! She’s almost a year and a half and we are backtracking a little to add more distractions in training. Freya is beautiful! You guys are great puppy parents. One of my friends has a GSD named Freya too!
We found giving our pup a toy to chew on when she started nibbling us helpful. That way she knew what she should and should not nibble. You folks are doing a great job!
I love how it’s very obvious you guys put a lot of research and thought into getting a puppy. It sets a very good example for people thinking about getting a dog. Even if they aren’t planning to train them for protection this is how you should be treating them in the beginning to have a well rounded dog.
I wanna recommend using hand signs when you teach her a verbal command, also "give" "leave it" and "drop it" are so useful. Yelping (like a fellow puppy) when she chews on you should help her learn not to. As for bathtime bringing in treats to show her that the bath is a good place to be should help teach her to not try climbing out.
Totally agree - the hand commands are super helpful when you have people over and you want her to sit or stay without constantly having to say it and interrupt conversation . And the yelping like a puppy works like a charm! We did both of these with my dog when she was a puppy and she still knows them to this day (and she's 12)
I agree with the first part of your comment but I think they're giving her way too many treats haven't you watched the video all the way the dog ate throughout the entire video but yes hand signs clicks and whistles different dogs like different things some even prefer languages to others. My god dog Jasper likes Spanish for his cues.
I love Sunday videos, like icing on a cinnamon bun...something you can savor. This video is perfect from beginning to end. With our puppy, sit, potty training came easy...come has been a bit of a struggle ...so after watching your diligent approach to training I will recommit to being a responsible dog parent and get back to training twice a day. Feel like she grew so much since last week.
Wonderful update, looks like Freya doubled her size and learned a lot! You might be able to modify the first ramp to use in the car for allowing her to get in and out without jumping. I know come here is really easy for Freya right now, but once puberty hits it will be really valuable to have Come here ingrained in her as one of the most high reward commands, so no shame in giving treats for something "easy" :)

I could literally watch hours of her following treats down the ramp. That was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! Edit: Okay, never mind. Watching her double bounce after her ball was the cutest thing I’ve been seen!
Such a sweet puppy! We got our first puppy in January and know how difficult it is. Biting is 100% normal, all though painful. Throwing toys is super helpful! I would say you probably don’t need the leash in the house especially because there aren’t any rooms. Make sure and take her to the beach and to fun outdoor spaces too!
Wonderful video like always! I am so excited to see little Freja grow up! I do have one suggestion though; if you can, please please please train using a harness and also use a harness on walks. Contrary to popular belief these do NOT encourage pulling any more than a collar, and simply take the pressure off the puppy's neck which is a sensitive area for dogs and thereby also give you more control when holding on a shorter leash, as a good harness usually wraps around the front of the chest which is a much more robust area when pressure applies from leash pulling or holding on short leash. But other than that, you guys are doing soo well and like I said I cannot wait for more Freja content!
Love that you are using long leash. Excellent way to be able to correct from afar and also correcting her without using your hands on her. Hand only used for treats and cuddle.

I Love your videos so much! They motivate me to be more adventurous. I also Love the fact that you got a German Shepherd Puppy! They are wonderful dogs, especially for protection. My 12 year old niece will only go walk without an adult if my dog is with her. He is so protective of her. And myself :). I do have a good tip that worked amazingly for my dog, I have never had to kennel him because of it. So when they go to nibble you, always have a toy handy to divert their attention to. It also works for chewing on no no's like shoes and carpet. My dog ate the wallpaper off of my moms dining room wall and thats it. I have never kenneled him and he will not put him mouth on anything thats not a toy. Good luck with everything Freja! I will be watching because I am obsessed with her! ❤

Our pup was so bitey when she was that little. We got chew toys so when she was nibbling we would hold those toys and let her chew that rather than us. So far she has never chewed on anything other than her toys. I also learned so much from Zak George here on TH-cam about training our pup. He's great!
You guys are doing an amazing job at raising her and socialising! I was wondering if you guys know that untill 12 weeks a puppy is very curious about everything and hardly shows signs of fear during the socialisation process. But this will completely shift around 12 weeks which is normal! (This is when wolf pups leave their nest for the first time and need to become aware of danger). It's very important that all the socialisation you want to do, happens before 12 weeks and repeats after 12 weeks. That's why I would recommend going to different kind of places already (if she doesn't have the energy to walk there, drive there with the car). And I also would let her meet other dogs. I honestly think the risk of a stressed dog later is far more concerning than the health risk (although I know this is an unpopular opinion). Also I would be weary of giving that much treats and pet her when she gets more fearful after the 12 weeks. Because you can accidently affirm her anxiety that way. Just let her explore, be curious and the socialisation is already happening. She mainly needs to see that you remain calm and just be there with her. Maybe you already knew about the 12 week shift but I just wanted you to be aware in case you didn't, so you guys won't think why is she suddenly afraid of something when she wasn't before. I think the official training ( giving commands like sit, down etc. ) is not as important in the beginning as socialising and setting boundaries and training them to be ok when you guys leave her etc. Every adult dog ends up knowing how to sit. But if a dog is not socialised correctly it can cause a lot of stress later in life which is hard to remedy. I like to differentiate between 'training' and 'raising' a dog. The training meaning learning all the commands etc. But the raising meaning raising a calm and happy dog. The latter is a lot harder for a lot of people. But I think you guys are definitely on the right track!
You guys are doing a great job spending lots of quality time with her! I love her ears at this age ❤️ If you haven’t already, she may need a fan by her crate for some air flow. The little ones run hot 😉 I have three Australian cattle dogs, they are drivers and GSDs are leaders, great herding dogs with strong instincts.

I’ve had my corgi pup for a few weeks now and the puppy biting is my least favorite thing. I’ve noticed that exaggerating a scream or cry when he bites you too hard has really helped him to nibble softer when dealing with hands as opposed to toys.
For the tub try a licky matt or smear peanut butter or cream cheese on the wall. Creates a positive experience and helps keep the dog in there without force. Licking is also relaxing for a dog. For place try a dog cot. Good job on getting distance from the drill! Nice to see you letting her be a puppy and explore with the measuring tape. ❤️ Biting is totally normal. It has nothing to do with boundaries. She’s just a puppy and that’s what they do. Redirecting works well. You should play with her more. They love to play and you can incorporate a lot of training in play. For the marker technically you say yes (or whatever the marker is), then pull the food out of your pocket and feed. Otherwise the movement becomes the marker. Your trainer is not 100% up to snuff when it comes to progressive training methods. You also don’t have to say her name before every command. Always reward for the recall. Always. You shouldn’t be taking food away from the puppy so soon-she needs a longer history of reward. Frankly when out and about I always reward my dogs for recalling. It keeps me from requiring an ecollar when I hike, essentially. Also I’d recommend seeing if the puppy can just sleep thru the night. I never did the schedule thing with mine. If they needed to go they asked and I think each puppy went out just a couple times the first week. Why is she required to heel out of the kennel to go outside? I’ve never seen anyone do that before (and I’ve been in competitive dog sports and dogs for decades). Check out the pet section of Fenzi Dog Sport Academy. They offer webinars and training sessions online for progressive dog training. Also check out Shade Whitesel-she is a very well regarded trainer fit working line GSDs and she training using progressive methods and is a ton of fun and just a really great person. She really knows what she’s doing.

Oh one more thing (another annoying dog owner who thinks she knows best, i know, im sorry haha), consider getting a harness for her, instead of the collar. Or at least use a harness when outside. Collars can be so straining to their necks, especially when they are growing their bones/body
@@Rubih I double that, especially when using a long leash, it's a big no no to use it on a collar as that can be really painful / damaging if the dog crashes into it.
Yes is your marker for a behavior just like a clicker would be. As soon as she does what you want then you immediately say yes to mark the behavior, then treat. Your trainer should have had you "prime" the marker word yes by saying yes, then treat about 5 times 10 times a day for a few days. This will come in handy later when your move on to more difficult behaviors and you'll mark the correct behavior with a yes. I like to use something they really love but only get when you use the "come" command to make it really special, usually chicken. Then have a party! I would only use the command when she is already approaching you and you're certain she will comply otherwise she'll learn that it's okay to ignore the command. Just my 2 cents. I've trained and competed with quite a few dogs but I'm sure you're getting advise everywhere. I couldn't wait for my shepherd to loose her baby teeth.
My first German Shepard was called Freyja. Guy's reduce the treats. Absolutely not necessary. But praise is. And repition. Hours & hours of it. But before training it is necessary to tire your dog a bit. In saying that training should start around the 6 mth mark. I used to run my dogs up to 15 km after a year old. But from 6 mths I used a tennis racket and ball. After a good run they are very attentive. Meanwhile as you are doing make here family. And use the octaves in your voice for approval & disapproval. She fits in with you. Not you fitting in with her. The best of luck I hope I am of help. You will be good masters of the most wonderful breed. I am to old to get another, so I'm very envious.

Freja is a beautiful dog. One important tip . Get her use to brushing her teeth and do at least 3 times a week. Good dental health will impact her life. Nipping is normal and it should be redirected with a toy. Do you every let her off leash?

I just want to say be careful with the come command because she can easily learn to ignore you and then the situation that you really need her to listen to that command like if she got a off leash she got out somehow you need to come to come in to work really well so just be careful to make sure that when she does come to really up for praise and really make sure hey this is a great thing and to not overuse it so that she can get into the habit of ignoring. He also said it’s better to work on healing and staying by your side then the come command , because if she never leaves your side you should never have to say come here. Sorry for the long comment just wanted to make sure she doesn’t start ignoring you or she gets into a bad situation and doesn’t listen.
My dog was also very mouthy and I live with my mom who is disabled and I couldn’t have that so we would shove a toy in her mouth anytime she tried to put her mouth on us she just naturally like to play with her mouth open but we would automatically put some thing in her mouth because she would accidentally graze us with her teeth.

It works for cats too. The towel should be wet if you start without water in the bathtub, this way the towel doesn't move and sticks to the bottom.

I also agree. Hand signs have made a potentially life threatening busy street occurrence safe. She could not hear me but could see me. Thank goodness.

I enjoy when you guys do a segment on cooking or health, and I love life lessons and insights you bring out in videos. Like what you said about labeling behaviors. I have toddlers and it’s good to remember their just babies growing and learning.

Such a sweet puppy! We got our first puppy in January and know how difficult it is. Biting is 100% normal, all though painful. Throwing toys is super helpful! I would say you probably don’t need the leash in the house especially because there aren’t any rooms. Make sure and take her to the beach and to fun outdoor spaces too!

Wonderful video like always! I am so excited to see little Freja grow up! I do have one suggestion though; if you can, please please please train using a harness and also use a harness on walks. Contrary to popular belief these do NOT encourage pulling any more than a collar, and simply take the pressure off the puppy's neck which is a sensitive area for dogs and thereby also give you more control when holding on a shorter leash, as a good harness usually wraps around the front of the chest which is a much more robust area when pressure applies from leash pulling or holding on short leash. But other than that, you guys are doing soo well and like I said I cannot wait for more Freja content!

Love that you are using long leash. Excellent way to be able to correct from afar and also correcting her without using your hands on her. Hand only used for treats and cuddle.

I Love your videos so much! They motivate me to be more adventurous. I also Love the fact that you got a German Shepherd Puppy! They are wonderful dogs, especially for protection. My 12 year old niece will only go walk without an adult if my dog is with her. He is so protective of her. And myself :). I do have a good tip that worked amazingly for my dog, I have never had to kennel him because of it. So when they go to nibble you, always have a toy handy to divert their attention to. It also works for chewing on no no's like shoes and carpet. My dog ate the wallpaper off of my moms dining room wall and thats it. I have never kenneled him and he will not put him mouth on anything thats not a toy. Good luck with everything Freja! I will be watching because I am obsessed with her! ❤

Our pup was so bitey when she was that little. We got chew toys so when she was nibbling we would hold those toys and let her chew that rather than us. So far she has never chewed on anything other than her toys. I also learned so much from Zak George here on TH-cam about training our pup. He's great!

I was wondering if you guys know that untill 12 weeks a puppy is very curious about everything and hardly shows signs of fear during the socialisation process. But this will completely shift around 12 weeks which is normal! (This is when wolf pups leave their nest for the first time and need to become aware of danger).
It's very important that all the socialisation you want to do, happens before 12 weeks and repeats after 12 weeks. That's why I would recommend going to different kind of places already (if she doesn't have the energy to walk there, drive there with the car). And I also would let her meet other dogs. I honestly think the risk of a stressed dog later is far more concerning than the health risk (although I know this is an unpopular opinion).
Also I would be weary of giving that much treats and pet her when she gets more fearful after the 12 weeks. Because you can accidently affirm her anxiety that way. Just let her explore, be curious and the socialisation is already happening. She mainly needs to see that you remain calm and just be there with her.
Maybe you already knew about the 12 week shift but I just wanted you to be aware in case you didn't, so you guys won't think why is she suddenly afraid of something when she wasn't before.
I think the official training ( giving commands like sit, down etc. ) is not as important in the beginning as socialising and setting boundaries and training them to be ok when you guys leave her etc. Every adult dog ends up knowing how to sit. But if a dog is not socialised correctly it can cause a lot of stress later in life which is hard to remedy.
I like to differentiate between 'training' and 'raising' a dog. The training meaning learning all the commands etc. But the raising meaning raising a calm and happy dog. The latter is a lot harder for a lot of people. But I think you guys are definitely on the right track!
She is sooo cute.. I have never had a dog, always cats. Mainly because of lack of space. She has stole my heart ❤️

The little ones run hot 😉 I have three Australian cattle dogs, they are drivers and GSDs are leaders, great herding dogs with strong instincts.

I’ve had my corgi pup for a few weeks now and the puppy biting is my least favorite thing. I’ve noticed that exaggerating a scream or cry when he bites you too hard has really helped him to nibble softer when dealing with hands as opposed to toys.

For the tub try a licky matt or smear peanut butter or cream cheese on the wall. Creates a positive experience and helps keep the dog in there without force. Licking is also relaxing for a dog. For place try a dog cot. Good job on getting distance from the drill! Nice to see you letting her be a puppy and explore with the measuring tape. ❤️ Biting is totally normal. It has nothing to do with boundaries. She’s just a puppy and that’s what they do. Redirecting works well. You should play with her more. They love to play and you can incorporate a lot of training in play. For the marker technically you say yes (or whatever the marker is), then pull the food out of your pocket and feed. Otherwise the movement becomes the marker. Your trainer is not 100% up to snuff when it comes to progressive training methods. You also don’t have to say her name before every command. Always reward for the recall. Always. You shouldn’t be taking food away from the puppy so soon-she needs a longer history of reward. Frankly when out and about I always reward my dogs for recalling. It keeps me from requiring an ecollar when I hike, essentially. Also I’d recommend seeing if the puppy can just sleep thru the night. I never did the schedule thing with mine. If they needed to go they asked and I think each puppy went out just a couple times the first week. Why is she required to heel out of the kennel to go outside? I’ve never seen anyone do that before (and I’ve been in competitive dog sports and dogs for decades). Check out the pet section of Fenzi Dog Sport Academy. They offer webinars and training sessions online for progressive dog training. Also check out Shade Whitesel-she is a very well regarded trainer fit working line GSDs and she training using progressive methods and is a ton of fun and just a really great person. She really knows what she’s doing.

Oh one more thing (another annoying dog owner who thinks she knows best, i know, im sorry haha), consider getting a harness for her, instead of the collar. Or at least use a harness when outside. Collars can be so straining to their necks, especially when they are growing their bones/body
@@Rubih I double that, especially when using a long leash, it's a big no no to use it on a collar as that can be really painful / damaging if the dog crashes into it.
Yes is your marker for a behavior just like a clicker would be. As soon as she does what you want then you immediately say yes to mark the behavior, then treat. Your trainer should have had you "prime" the marker word yes by saying yes, then treat about 5 times 10 times a day for a few days. This will come in handy later when your move on to more difficult behaviors and you'll mark the correct behavior with a yes. I like to use something they really love but only get when you use the "come" command to make it really special, usually chicken. Then have a party! I would only use the command when she is already approaching you and you're certain she will comply otherwise she'll learn that it's okay to ignore the command. Just my 2 cents. I've trained and competed with quite a few dogs but I'm sure you're getting advise everywhere. I couldn't wait for my shepherd to loose her baby teeth.
My first German Shepard was called Freyja. Guy's reduce the treats. Absolutely not necessary. But praise is. And repition. Hours & hours of it. But before training it is necessary to tire your dog a bit. In saying that training should start around the 6 mth mark. I used to run my dogs up to 15 km after a year old. But from 6 mths I used a tennis racket and ball. After a good run they are very attentive. Meanwhile as you are doing make here family. And use the octaves in your voice for approval & disapproval. She fits in with you. Not you fitting in with her. The best of luck I hope I am of help. You will be good masters of the most wonderful breed. I am to old to get another, so I'm very envious.

Freja is a beautiful dog. One important tip . Get her use to brushing her teeth and do at least 3 times a week. Good dental health will impact her life. Nipping is normal and it should be redirected with a toy. Do you every let her off leash?

I just want to say be careful with the come command because she can easily learn to ignore you and then the situation that you really need her to listen to that command like if she got a off leash she got out somehow you need to come to come in to work really well so just be careful to make sure that when she does come to really up for praise and really make sure hey this is a great thing and to not overuse it so that she can get into the habit of ignoring. He also said it’s better to work on healing and staying by your side then the come command , because if she never leaves your side you should never have to say come here. Sorry for the long comment just wanted to make sure she doesn’t start ignoring you or she gets into a bad situation and doesn’t listen.
My dog was also very mouthy and I live with my mom who is disabled and I couldn’t have that so we would shove a toy in her mouth anytime she tried to put her mouth on us she just naturally like to play with her mouth open but we would automatically put some thing in her mouth because she would accidentally graze us with her teeth.
