- The original Ishin! was a phenomenal game that was trapped in Japan, then the remake was something that wasn't entirely necessary, but still allowed significantly more people to experience such an awesome game. However, could've done without the Yu-Gi-Oh! stuff I had enough of Master Duel and the stupid gems bro like come on.

I agree. I liked the remake of LAD Ishin, but even just when completing the main story I could tell this game was grindy as hell.

While there were aspects to the remake that I didn't enjoy much, especially with the combat, I still had a good time with it and I'm at the very least glad that I finally managed to experience the game and its story since it did keep me engaged. I know a lot of people thought that the remake was a sign of things to come with LAD and that it'd be somehow the beginning of the series' downfall (Which is bloody stupid, but who knows), but I still liked it even if I wouldn't put it at the top of my favorites.

Grinding for Amon in this game took way longer than I would have liked. Can't imagine doing it without the chicken racing glitch that later got patched lol
Just from a bit in the future, I'd like to point out that the game is getting a bit of a second breath on GamePass. This past week the number of hits on my guides were roughly equivalent between Ishin and Yakuza 0. Yakuza 0 consistently does the best numbers on my guides and has for the past few years so I kind of consider it a baseline metric.
Wow that's actually crazy to hear. Seems like it may have been a great decision by SEGA to chuck it on game pass then and hopefully means good things for Gaiden lol
Only thing I really didn't like about the Kiwami version is the lifebars being just a single shade of red like in 6. Bring back multiple lifebars for gaiden RgG plzsdkghjdslkdshfsdfhsdfhfkfhlkfqf

Honestly, I prefer just one life bar, and YK2 is an example of how you can go way too far in the other direction.
@@renotv3860 yeah, YK2 went way too far, I agree with that. I think Judgment and 5/0/Kiwami had the best execution of it, with rarely more than 5 bars with distinct colors.

It's weird that this game was remade in the first place. I would've thought localizing the already existing PS4 game in english then putting that on the other platforms would've been good enough. But I guess not.
Funny that I love how they balance the styles in the remake, it makes the game much more challenging and I ended up using all the styles in different scenarios and mix-match with the equipment to make better use of them. The game severely punishes you if you play braindead and that's why I love it
And the trooper cards (the defensive, support and heal) are very useful in Ishin difficulty

@@jeffreyw901 it is good for spear guys. I played 2 playthrough with Loincloth and other gears that give each 45% more brawler damage, it becomes insanely useful. The heat damage even surpasses Wild Dancer due to how it can be enchanced more (you can enhance heat damage for all styles when you limit break tho)
@@Ulqui_210 yeah I never platinum any RGG game except Yakuza 6 so I don't experience some of the issues. However the grind is sometimes too much tho, that I can agree.
Brawler was made shit, what r u on about? The whole parry and swap styles thing was gutted, and so was the brawler damage. Also, no styles get komaki roll except for brawler (which is a useless style) and they changed wild dance quickstep to be sluggish, hampering mobility. In oldshin, you were actually incentivized to use all the styles because they had their own cool shit. Horrid balancing
I have never seen a remake keep my enthusiasm high only to fuck up the one single thing that made an otherwise amazing experience kind of annoying so severely for me in my life. I really wish they didn't touch the combat as much as they did, especially in regards to the egregious about of Kiwami 2 level super armor every mini boss and main story boss gets for no reason. The Shimano fight in particular was what killed my honeymoon period for the combat almost immediately.
My problem with the remake was that it didn’t fix any of the issues I had with the original and just added more things I didn’t like. I thought OG ishin was alright aside from the grindy rpg mechanics, but the remake just takes that to a ridiculous level. The super armour every boss has combined with the giant enemies and the super attacks just makes it not feel like a yakuza game, it’s more like dark souls or something like that. I would’ve preferred a straight port of the ps4 game even if I did like some the changes to ryoma’s gameplay in the remake.
idk how but you are the first youtube creator ive subscribed to that has more than 3 game franchises that they share a common interest in with me and it is absolutely blowing my mind that someone on the internet also likes MGS, yugioh, RGG games, and monster hunter at the same time.
You might be my favourite Australian creator… just feels so comfy and at home with ya. Keep in mind this paradigm is on a bit of a scale and will slide for a bit whenever Glidus releases a new video.
For real though, thanks for all the Yakuza content, it’s my favourite game series and it deserves way more love. If only it was marketed in India more heavily, it’s basically a Bollywood franchise but with infinitely better writing, it would probably outsell GTA and TOTK.
I really loved Ishin Kiwami but I gotta say that I never got to play the original. I would have to buy myself an import copy so idk if I can do so anytime soon. Yet another enjoyable retrospective tho

@@askamikaze3936 it did feel quite different when I first tried it out and I don't understand why they used unreal engine instead of the dragon engine. I got used to it but I do agree that there is some weirdness to the movements and such

having not played the old ishin as im new to yakuza in general, i enjoyed alot playing a game that is basicaly yakuza but with samurai dudes 👍
My biggest complaint about this remake was that enemies only had 1 health bar. I played on legend and had a decent load out but it was just super discouraging to see my sword do like no damage

The ps3 port is a very valid way to play, it runs at 30 yes but it rarely drops especially during combat unlike the remake on ps4
Didn’t like the gameplay much, but as a huge fan of late Edo Era history, i really liked the story (even if it takes massive liberties at times). There’s nothing quite like the name card for a character popping up and and going “I KNOW THIS GUY FROM GINTAMA/RUROUNI KENSHIN!

It was this game that I decided to play it on hard difficulty as I’m a something of Yakuza expert myself
Then I discovered how grindy and time consuming this game really is (thanks Powerpyx for that) now I deleted it but since I’m only LJ,7 and 8 away from being done with the series
I think imma redownload it again and just muster thru it on easy just bc I have already paid money for it

as much as i appreciate the take on the whole trooper cards style trying to make it look different comparing to the OG,It just felt forced and even ruined the game's grounded narrative for me and i personally didn't like the fact that it's not even fully optional cus even if you stop using them,The bosses sure as hell will and that will be a bit immersive breaking.
Like i'll always remember Isshin as a serious samurai story told with blood,sword and honor,Not Kamahameha beams and Yu-Gi-Oh nonsense...
That's the kind of stuff you expect to see in sub stories.
Another pet peeve about this for is the Font style for the UI and everything...they just looks soooo flat,bland and simple ?
Either way i am just only complaining too much when i should be grateful that this game even got an attention to begin with and a release to the west let alone a PC release.
For all we know this game would have suffered the same fate as Kensan/Dead Souls where they'll be simply forgotten.
Guy didn’t even mention the completely mind boggling nerd of the “Last of the Dragons” sword. For whatever reason they just got rid of the sword beams, making it a very mediocre sword. Anyone who grinds towards it more than likely has a SIGNIFICANTLY better weapon.
Six Samurai in a video about Ishin? Based. I still absolutely love Ishin and had heaps of fun with it - but ultimately it is the same game, grinding, jank and all.
I enjoyed my time with Ishin Kiwami, but I could see the cracks. The material grinding, the obscene costs for weapons, the boring substories that involved nothing more than finding someone, giving them item, leaving, and doing it again and again. At least 0 changed how that operated.
I'm just ready for Gaiden to drop. Just three months...

i quite enjoyed all the silly side content in ishin but out of all the games it's probably the one i was least invested in the actual main story mostly because i had trouble remembering everyone's "new" bloody names. Even after the updates the smithy and dungeon are way too grindy though.
Had to sell the game because they never fixed the stuttery cutscenes and thats a shame.

This remake was the first RGG game I skipped since becoming a fan With yakuza 0. I just don’t care for the non city setting and fighting with swords and guns. I love this series because I can brawl with my fist in an open world city.

If anything playing Ishin/0/K1 on PS3 is similar to playing 6/K2 on base PS4/XB1 but even then I think those games run a little better than 6 and K2.

I think this game has the best version of Baka Mitai
i was more hyped for this game than any other game ever. i actively avoided spoilers, both on gameplay and story. however i wish i played the original over this one. although i enjoyed the majority of the game, it still had the most issues out of any yakuza game so far.
1. constant stutter
2. every single boss fight sucked. i have never seen more hyper arrmor from yakuza games more than here. like i get two attacks, and then get one shot because the stupid boss won't stagger.
3. brawler was completely useless. not only was this style extremely stiff and uncomfortable to use, it does no damage at all. i spent a lot of time upgrading the style and it sucked ass.
4. i think the original ishin looks better. kiwami obviously have better graphics, but the lighting is so ugly to look at. i hated daytime, because it made everyone look like walking corpses.
5. the card system sucks and its not fun. fuck the bosses who just shoots fireballs that one shots or throw a tornado at me that's impossible to dodge due to limited space.

Problem is its a remaster labeled as a remake
I tinhk one other reason peolpe don't talk much about this game is the setting it takes place. Yakuza's early 2000s-present day Japan (plus the 80s with 0) is something most people understand, can look up or already familiar with to an extent thatthey can focus on the story without explanation. 19th century Japanese history on the other hand is something that most western people overlook and don't know much about unless they actively try to learn. Add that it's a completely standalone story, and it not just has less impact due to limited knowledge of the era but also downtime looking things up (even with the handy built in glossary for certain terms).
Even if you are no familiar with all the tiny deatils about everyday Japan, in the Yakuza games you still know exactly that you fight on the right side for the right reasons (maybe except Lost Judgement) whereas here I felt that they tried but in the end I didn't fully understood what I did. I guess the good thing as they made most bad guys really despicable (with characters playing them also being other bad guys from the series) and made a strong finale to mask the story problems a bit.
Add the weird trooper card system, the odd decision for UE4 engine, the tedious level of grind (luckily trainers exist on PC) and no mater how much I enjoyed this one, I'll probably never replay it.

Kind of like Pokemon gen 4 remake. Good games overall, but pointless if you already played the original. I didn't play OG Ishin and Ishin Kiwami is one of the best games I've played this year.

I'm actually kinda sad that I didn't enjoy Ishin Kiwami as much as I'd hoped. The whole game feels rushed. The in-game environment textures look flat and dated. The RPG system tries to keep the feeling and progression of the old game but somehow turned out more grindy and RNG-based. The enemies both in the story segments and dungeons have super powers, as well as being super spongey, they take you out of the immersion.
I've played and like all the Yakuza and Judgement games (that are officially available on PC that is), but Ishin Kiwami just has so many things holding it back, it's hard for me to recommend it to anyone else.
How can it be an amazing game but a meh remake? If the original is amazing wouldn’t the remake be at least as good? Or is the remake changing things to make it worse?
Because as he said, if you play 1 and then play Kiwami, you are playing a different game. You play Ishin and then play Ishin Kiwami, you are playing a game that is 90% the same.

Mind you Ishin was never released outside of Japan so this PS4/5 release can even be considered a porting/localisation effort and not a remake at all. I mean 'Kiwami' certainly isn't in the title of the game. Or does porting a game also make it inferior/meh compared to the original?

The original game still exists. Kiwami is still in the title of this game in Japan. That the original was never released outside of Japan is irrelevant.
And there are enough differences between them that it cannot be considered a mere port.
