The recolor is an original Dark Zelda concept that's arguably closer to Vaati than Hilda. There's even a possessed Zelda they could've used for a dark form as well.
Melee white was actually a light purple, which referenced the blue ring tunic. The new one is more white and golden which better references her modern priestess outfits.

How are so many people confused and convinced the black alt is for Hilda?? The alt is black, black tabard, purple accents, grey hair, blue eyes, blue jewel in the circlet and gold trim. Hilda has a WHITE dress with a PURPLE tabard, no colour accents, dark PURPLE hair, RED eyes, RED jewel in the circlet and a RED trim. You don't have to know all the details but the sheer confidence in asserting this is Hilda is beyond astounding just for the ability of basic object and pattern recognition.
Just realised all the Zelda characters are basically from different games. Link is based on Breath of the Wild, Zelda is based on A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, Ganondorf is from Ocarina of Time, Toon Link is from Wind Waker, Young Link is from Majora's Mask, and Sheik... isn't really from any game, since they're an Ocarina of Time character based on Breath of the Wild and possibly Twilight Princess aesthetics!

I _love_ the Twilight Princess designs, and I do wish we had more TP rep in the way of costumes, but it's really cool having representation for so many Zelda games through character designs. Zelda's dress can change colour in the first game because Link & Zelda's outfit share the same colour palette, due to technical limitations. The NES was limited in how many colours it could display at once.
