  • It has now been a week since Hurricane Helene ripped through Western North Carolina with torrential rain and hurricane-force winds, causing fatalities, power outages and a path of destruction.
These are the latest updates on the recovery efforts for Oct. 4, a week after the storm hit on Sept. 26-27.
AdventHealth Hendersonville said in an Oct. 4 news release that it is offering emergency and inpatient care, including ICU, behavioral health, lab and imaging services. Elective surgeries have been postponed to prioritize urgent care needs.

"What's taking so long?" How can someone look at the amount of devastation and ask what's taking so long? Whole towns were washed away. The landscape has been completely, forever changed. Did they think that roads would be cleared and power turned back on the next day? I wish News would be doing something to Help the situation, like "here is what this community needs most and here is how you reach that location now to deliver" or "here is a list of gas operating gas stations in your area" or maybe they could speak about all the aid the Governor announced was on the way to help give people hope. Anything but that whiney "What's taking so long...."

They are working around the clock, in the background, coordinating with local, state, federal agencies to get critical information out to it's citizens. They are the information hub for buncombe county. Their homes and families were also heavily impacted, grieving but show up every day, taking time away from their family and their organizing to make public info available.
Show some respect for the middleman, which they are, getting hit from both sides. And watch the briefings 10 and 4. Then you will see what they are up against. They are working their asses off.

It’s the local people getting together that getting things done. If it weren’t for them, It would be years before the Power company or anyone else would come in. Seriously, I’ve driven by several areas, see more people sitting in trucks than out there working. For two hours, seven or eight trucks set at Highway 11 and Joe Cassie Road. I don’t know how many supervisors have to drive up and down and take notes to see the devastation. They’re wasting our money.

My parents were without power for 3.5 weeks after hurricane gustav. When the destruction is this bad, this is to be expected. Some locations after Katrina took 18 months in New orleans. Obviously those areas that took the longest didn't have anyone return to live in them initially.

You are clearly ignorant of how things work during a disaster. That $750 is immediate cash because ATM's are not working or gone. People will give a list of needs to FEMA and get more assistance they need. In addition, home values will be noted, and there will be assistance to repair or rebuild their home. They will also have access to temporary housing/trailers. I know because my family benefited from it during a major flood. Posts like yours aren't helping anyone and make people feel like nobody cares, and that is just not true. Just stop and do better!!
