The lady is wrong about veneration of Maori. Maori occupy the bottom wrung of every negative social statistic. 50% of the prison population is Maori and 20% of Maori live in poverty. Maori also have a much lower life expectancy than people of European origin. People may say one thing but the stats don't lie about the general nature of the country. Ask European or "Pakeha" as they are called to speak Maori and the vast majority will resist. Sorry to be a downer but as a black man living here 20 years I just wanted to keep thing real for anyone wanting to visit. I doubt this is a surprse to anyone anyway as the "is there a university in Jamaica?" question is a dead giveaway of how black people are viewed.

This was 1 of my favorite interviews. Johnnel was knowledgeable in the information about where she is and I especially loved the way she expressed the way natives are treated. I've always had NZ on my bucket list. Thanks Xavier for bringing us these amazing interviews.
You need to go you will not be disappointed, and she is right they have a lot of respect for Jamaicans and reggae very common there.

Awesome beautiful!! I’m so in agreement with Johnnel that there’s so many facets to us Jamaicans, more than the typical stereotype of dreadlocks, weed, and reggae. We need to go out into the world with our skills and talents, soak up what we can and then, return home to build a better Jamaica for generations to come. 🇯🇲

When u go back they kill u the next day. Many people will not b encouraged unless the govt establish strong strategies 2 fight n lessen crime.

Great interview with a very personable and articulate young lady, who makes an excellent Ambassador for Jamaica. I work from home, and I look forward to these Interviews, as my employment is largely on the phones and sometimes it becomes quite monotonous. Ms. Johnnel had such a warm personality and positive outlook, she definitely brought a little sunshine into an otherwise pretty dreary Monday. Keep up the good work.

The Hon. Robert Nesta Marley OM is a musical icon here in NZ. His concert in Auckland in 1979 was a landmark cultural event, especially for many indigenous Maori folks...

I loved New Zealand when I visited many years ago. And what you said about the beauty of the countryside is what I experienced. When the plane I was on was coming into land the grass alongside the runway was so green I thought is was fake grass but then I saw the sheep feeding and realized it was real. Loved the people very friendly and helpful.

Had a Teacher from New Zealand when at school here in UK, she was lovely. Although she was English background, she was born in NZ. She taught us a Moari song, that to this day I remember all the words and can sing.
New Zealand loves Bob Marley, he came to Auckland back in 1979...Reggae became very popular, still to this day...
It took me two days to travel from Jamaica to New Zealand. I went to Auckland on the north island. It is such a beautiful country - reminds me of Jamaica. The Mauri's are friendly.
The staff at the airport were not pleasant but the hotel staff and everyone else were pleasant.

One of the most profound things I have learnt and appreciate from this part of the world is the Haka. Always bring me to tears. Can't help but wonder if Johnnel has ever experienced this ceremonial event in person.
I have always admired how New Zealand protect their border especially in the agaricultural sector. It's amazing to see on the program Border Patrol.
What are you studying? I am curious if you don't mind sharing.
Yes, the sorrel is grown in NZ and apparently quite expensive. Watch a ND guy talk about it on his channel recently. I understand, its very different at Xmas when family is not around and you are far away. But try and get likkle sorrel to have a peice of home from time to time. I went on a driving holiday around the North Island of New Zealand, years ago. Absolutely astonishing nation and people. The scenery there is to die for. I'm of direct Jamaican descent myself with both parents from Mocho, Clarendon.
I've traveled to many countries and most people dont know much about JAMAICA Except for Bob Marley and Usain bolt. So this channel is very necessary for jamaicans and foreigners watching.
From New Zealand and a Maori, we are people of all people in Aotearoa, the original name, long white cloud. We are what she says we are, like every indigenous race we all have our beautiful traditions. We have beautiful Jamaicans in North Island, so lovely to know them.
Xavier, your program is just awesome. I am learning a lot about our great and adventurous Jamaican people, we are everywhere. Jamaicans are really confident , brilliant and fearless. Jamaica is known around the world, it’s music,art , culture and it’s entrepreneurial people. A small but great nation. Keep up the good work.

It is so amazing that I was discussing relocating to New Zealand or Australia. I’m a Jamaican living in the IS. I came from Manchester where I went to school in Mandeville to the US 41 years ago 😂. I am interested because as I studied the state of the world and possible nuclear fallout it is said that those would be the safest place when all is said and done

side note.....New Zealand Is a pacific island chain, it can be cold (snow and -0c) but also lush and semi tropical in summer.....the ingenious Tangata whenua (people of the land) journeyed from Polynesia 600+years ago....we have a strong connection with Jamaica as many maori adopted Rastafarian and Israelite philosophies ..Bob Marley is commonly referred to as Uncle Bob and is revered amongst maori and Polynesians in New Zealand.he visited and performed in 1970s at the request of our Blackpower organisation and the 12tribes community.....
we have been referred to as the Jamaica of the pacific because of our love of reggae and weed..(also colonial country)

How I love this , I’ve been to NZ three times and what Johnnel is saying is absolutely correct, been to all the places, Hobberton and some of the Lord of the Rings film set in Wellington, love Queenstown and road trips on the south and north islands. Very friendly and welcoming people. Best place to visit but I support I’m bias as my daughters live there. Looking forward to my next visit when the world open up.

Johnnel was a breath of fresh air. She represented my island to the fullest. Now time to put New Zealand on my bucket list! Its beauty seems clearly unparralled. Great interview Xavier it filled me up like a patty and coco bread..lol. Jamaica just needs to resign themself to the fact that Bob Marley and brand Jamaica are inextricably tied together. We should have a massive image of Bob erected on approach to either airport on either Portmore Hills, St Catherine or Mango Walk, Montego Bay which could be visible at nite or day. A country with a legendary and world renowned figure like Bob should rush to do this for the global appeal and tourism.

I love this interview. It's very interesting 🤔 I've always wondered and assumed what life would be like in New Zealand. It's not a good thing to make assumptions 😉. Nice to hear about the Maoris and the humbleness of PM Jacinda.

Yeah. Our cuisine does suck in terms of seasoning lol. Im a maori, and within my tribe...we eat most food raw - especially seafood. And thats my favourite cuisine. Or if we cook meat, its eaten "blue" (brown on the outside, raw in the middle), or "rare". No salt . No pepper. No meat resting time.

Hahahha I'm a kiwi and I'm not a fan of roast ect which we inherited from the British but while we have Chinese and Indian takeaways it has only been fairly recent that more and more spices and cuisines have been available in nz and alot of the spice level has been dumbed down in the big city you have more options but otherwise the European kiwi yea I completely get where she is comeing from its basic flavors

Am Jamaican by-the-way.
Our food is not bland!!! but she lives in Dunedin,so there's that,our Fish and Chips is the best in the world,our beef and Lamb as well,we have abundant Seafood and Fruit and veges which is THE best on the planet. I think if she lived in Auckland,she would taste real Kiwi food. She is a lovely lady,and she will be well loved in NZ,that laugh though,totally contagious. :-)
I forgot,we have Hangi and Umu,ground ovens that steam the food,and give it a nice smoky taste,so good.
Yeah she needs to travel up North. And there are far better burgers in New Zealand than Ferg burgers.
