Dear Malika thank you for sharing your experiences. I am so sorry that some have been full of challenges. I have been living in Playa for 7 years and have not had the power outages or extreme heat that you have had. I have visited Merida several times. But I was warned and felt that it was very hot. There are so many environments to choose from in Mexico. I hope you get a chance to explore some of the other states. Merida was probably not the best place to move to first. But, of course, you did not know.
If you are ever near Playa, I would be happy to meet up with you and give you an idea of how a single Black active 80-year-old is being spoiled living 2 1/2 blocks from the beach in a secure and tranquil community. My drivers always have their air turned on and I always ride in the front. That way I am closer to the keys if I ever need to jerk them out or take over the driving even though I know them and trust them. LOL I wish you the best.

I'm in Queretaro. We lost power for about 2 hours three days ago. It goes up to the mid to upper 90s during the day (can't even imaging 108-109!!!). Queretaro normally has highs in the 80s. The house I'm renting does not have air conditioning although there are ceiling fans in every room. It's a traditional Spanish colonial style house with the thick walls so it does surprisingly well keeping it in the mid-80s inside but it's still a bit warmer than I'd like in the middle of the day. The last 2 days were especially bad since it seems like the nighttime temps aren't going as low as they were only a week ago, so the house doesn't have a chance to cool all the way down overnight. Researching other places I may want to move or finding a house/apartment with AC/solar panels, etc. Not sure how you all in Merida are doing it, hang in there!

Hola, Malikah. I'm sorry to read you and Lashaun are having difficulties in Mexico. I heard about the necessity of having solar panels in Merida. Perhaps ya'll can catch the mist from a cool ocean breeze at the beach in Progreso. When I was a digital nomad in Puerto Juarez (near Cancun) during winter 2024, I found the beach enjoyable at sunrise and at sunset. Any other time, the climate was hotter than fish grease. Stay cool, Mi Amiga.

We were there last week on a scouting trip. I see why you are leaving. I think a lot of people aren't being honest about living in Merida. I thank God that we did the scouting trip first. We stayed at the Marriott and the Wayam. The power went out multiple times but came back on within a few moments. I noticed that common areas like the lobby, etc. Were not kept cool. The elevators were unbearable. Locals said it was unusually hot but they weren't sweating buckets the way we were. The food options there was also subpar in my opinion. Very little vegan options as they eat a lot of meat there especially pork. We believed the hype but boots on the ground, we couldn't wait until our flight out. Not to mention the ick factor. There is trash everywhere. People just throw litter everywhere and no sanitation to pick it up. New items in stores are often dusty/dirty. I was really shocked at how their public schools and other facilities looked as well. It seemed as if a lot of things were cheaply made. Even American products like Dove soap was different. I was hoping to look past a few inconveniences for having cheap rent but the overall quality of being there wasn't worth it. But again, that's my opinion.
