Misfits were horror punk. Lots of horror movie themes. Ghouls, werewolves, blood. Their aesthetic matched this. Nonetheless, they were one of the greatest punk bands ever. Danzig was the Elvis of the punk world. And the album Earth AD is one of the best start-to-finish punk albums ever made.

The Misfits were great. I loved the horror themes and extreme lyrics. A lot gets lost on the younger generation these days because they see the lyrics as more of an affidavit than art. That's one thing I always say to people when they take lyrics too seriously. They're lyrics, not an affidavit. American Nightmare is probably my favorite Misfits song. Sounds like Elvis, but the lyrics are totally fucked, lol. That's also what drew me to Acid Bath. They could write a beautiful song like Dead Girl, but the lyrics were twisted.

Glenn Danzig was into horror comics that were popular in the 60’s, with titles like Creepy and Eerie. He wrote songs like this this to reflect the types of stories told in this magazines. His song Skulls sounds like a romantic love song while the lyrics declare, “I hack the heads off of little girls and hang them on my wall. I need your skull. I want your skull.”

My favorite thing about this song is that it sounds so upbeat and boppy, yet the lyrics are insanely edgy 😂 to be fair to The Misfits, they did the whole "edgy" thing before pretty much anyone else was. Before it was "cool". At least in this regard. They were pioneers. Bands like Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie/White Zombie wouldn't have ever existed without these guys.

@@BamaXander Sure The Misfits made their mark on rock history but they weren't the first to do the horror, shock rock genre. That was Alice Cooper. Sorry to pick on your comment out of the many who are saying The Misfits were first.

    • @BamaXander
      @BamaXander 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@MsPrincesspaulina The Misfits were absolutely the first to do horror punk. They weren't shocked rock. The reason I give Alice Cooper credence is because the genres we know today were nowhere near as defined in the 70's as they are now. For instance, Black Sabbath is only considered "heavy metal" in hindsight; heavy metal didn't exist when they hit the scene. Thrash wasn't a thing as a genre until your Metallicas came along. So, yes. Alice Cooper was definitely one of the first to do shock rock with dark, theatrical imagery... but The Misfits did horror punk first and, I would argue, had just as big of an influence on their genre as Alice Cooper had on his. That's not a slight against anyone, Alice is cool. That's prolly the best way to word it, is that The Misfits helped take what people like Alice Cooper were doing and crank it up several notches, both in imagery AND sound.

During those years there were people burning records, bands were being taken to court, Congress the senate the pmrc were trying to censor and ban music. There were bands who wrote and recorded the most offensive music that they could come up with and that was their way of fighting censorship. And it worked. Eventually the government and society had to admit that everyone has the first amendment and you can’t censor music because they have the right to say anything that they want no matter how much you don’t like it. There were bands like the Misfits and GG Allin who said “oh my music offends you? I’m going to make something that is really going to offend you”. They weren’t killing babies or raping women and children obviously just making the most offensive songs to prove that they have the right to. Metallica played this song live at an MTV music awards show in 96 to fight censorship from MTV.

I got a call one day in the early 90's from the Ciafa brothers ( Jerry Only and Doyle ) who played bass and guitar for THE MISFITS wanting a sculpture made of Jerry. They came to my studio and Jerry sat for me as I sculpted his portrait for the figure. Incredibly nice, mellow dudes and huge. This is screaming PUNK to me in the best way possible.
Punk philosophy is seeing social and political problems and pointing them out in the most "in your face" way.
Obvioulsy aggressive optimism can tend to be incredibly naive and toxic.
This song is an answer to that by showcasing the opposite.
Agressive pessimism which almost makes it comedic.
The music just compliments this sense of comedy you get from the contrast of those ideas.
    Great song in my opinion.

I saw Danzig one year either on Halloween or a day or two before (can't recall exactly anymore but if it wasn't it was really close to it) and he did a full set. Killed it.. For the encore he brought out Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (I don't care if it's his real name or not, it's the COOLEST name ever) the guitarist for The Misfits and they did a 45 minute Misfits set. When they busted this out... pure CHAOS. Like one of the rare shows I've been to where I felt bad for the security/bouncers because there were simply NOT enough of them, nor were they prepared, for that wild of a crowd. They looked like they were going to drop dead from exhaustion when the show was over. It was pretty awesome though, not going to lie.

Misfits are one of the top 3 OG Punk bands of all time. You'll see their logo everywhere for good reason. Their songs are AMAZINGLY catchy with intentionally "spooky"/"horror"/"scary" lyrics. Some are more serious and there is also an angry youth undercurrent, as is found in all Punk, but the upbeat music makes you want to jump around and move. It's super fun to play too. Any three kids that have been playing for 6 months can get together and play a Misfits song.
The contrast of bright music with dark lyrics is what is so interesting. Lots of Punk, Bob Reggae uses the same combo of "simple, catchy tunes" with deep political, social messages. It's a great way to "sneak" in uncommon feeling/message into what is otherwise a simple pop song. Their singer, Glen Danzig is an amazing song writer and has written for folks like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
Not all of their song's lyrics are this "brutal", so listen to a bit more. You can also find tons of other artists doing Misfits covers, which is fun to listen to also. Cheers!

I've seen a few people react to this, and for this song you two were the most level-headed and emotionally intelligent people I've seen so far.
Note that the singer of the misfit is Glen Danzig, who later founded the band Danzig. You reacted to Danzig's song "Mother" 7 months ago, so his voice may be familiar. The theme "I (Danzig) am evil" is also familiar. Danzig seemed to present himself as a sort of champion of evil, horror and all things of that ilk, even though he had that smooth soulful voice. Dude was also pretty ripped, always dressed in black, and wore sap gloves (gloves lined with weight for added punching power) onstage. He's crazy, but his sense of showmanship, storytelling and musicality are top notch.

Oh epic! You guys are on point with the music today ! 😂 to me its kind of like revelry in violence a d depravity, the celebration of depravity you might say. Like I am gonna piss everyone off and I'm gonna love it too! Punks are basically olden days trolls 😂hybrid moments another of my faves by the misfits and Saturday night (later on whe Michael Graves took over as lead vocals) also Project 1950s is pretty cool punk spin on 50s songs, Jerry Only on most of the vocals, hes the bassist here and throughout most of their tenure and not extremely polished as a vocalist but that's kinda the point of punk, to be "outside the box" kind of thing, so it works in my opinion.

Punk rock usually has a lot of humor and sarcasm. This is horrocore punk, which is the darker side of humor and sarcasm, It's related to goth punk. . lol The Cramps, The Damned, GWAR, etc are the same.
Right about happy sounding sounds and opposite lyrical meanings. It's punk lol. See Ramones "Blitzkreig Bop", "I Wanna be Sedated". etc. Great analogies Lex and Brad!
Misfits have a lot of good songs and crazy videos. BTW, Metallica did a great cover on this followed by "Green Hell" and many other punks songs on Garage Day Revisited album. More thrashier.
Danzig was in the Misfits. Henry Rollins was in Black Flag. Yall reacted to Danzig, Misfits, Black Flag songs and Rollins Band "Liar" before, too. Need to react to more Henry Rollins Band songs, videos! :Low Self Option" is a good one.
