Awsome guide. I just finished replacing a clutch on a 2012 VW Caddy Maxi and this guide was a big help. However on my Caddy there was no need to losen stearing or lower ball joint. Great filming by your wife as well, you two did a fantastic job. Highly appreciate the detailed and step by step video and good instructions. Subscribed !
Thank you very much for this great video. I did mine over the weekend along with my clunky driveshaft as it was coming off anyway. My only tip for anyone else going for it is that driveshafts come out inner first and go back in outer first. That way you can jam the disk to do the inner bolts. Also look up how to reset the gear linkage. Easy peasy. The great thing about following your video was that when I'd finished there were no leftover parts! Edit to say invest in a cheap impact wrench. I got one from Aldi. Removing the 2 drive shaft caps with a long 6mm allen bit on an impact wrench makes it so much easier. The gearbox will slide out after being turned about 30°. Mine had to come back out a few times to work out why it stopped working. Turned out one of the locator pins on the clutch had fallen out and jammed the spring after 100 miles! It was a bit hard to diagnose but I'm now an expert gearbox remover...
I just finished this job thanks for the inspiration. The hardest part for me was mating the gearbox back with the engine. After about 6 hrs of messing around it went in I cant remember how as I was so tired but relieved. I cant get 1st and 2nd gears very well but I think the shift linkage needs set up again. was going to do the EGR at the same time but another day as it still wasn't that much better access with the gearbox removed. Thanks again for a great video and commentary.
You're very welcome, glad if it helped! I had the same issue with the gear change. You're right, its the linkage, cables that come from selector, the one that you have to twist and turn to disconnect - as you connect it, push it in deeper.
Props go out to you from the US, my man! :-) Fixing your work vehicle to get back out making money--my hat is off to you, sir! A lot of good "old-school" tips here. (thumbs up) Note to anyone reading that this is the same method more or less with VW Mk5+ Golf, Jetta, GTI, GLI, B6 Passat and EOS. Power tools optional as long as you know how to use them... ;-)
I was thinking this would be similar for my 2011 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 tdi with DSG automatic 6 speed. Torque specs and steps pretty much identical, is That’s correct? I also have a 2007 Volkswagen GTI manual. 🙂
I did my alhambra in 8hrs by myself and in all honesty the hardest part of the job was getting the bloody differential to clear the engine cradle.. Very tight but nothing brute force and ignorance did sort lol. Brilliant video my friend..

Thanks and that video was great, I may be brave one day and try this, I have a VW Passat 1.6Tdi currently on 153,000 on first clutch and flywheel and its only barely noticeable wobble now and again, I’m hoping for another 100,000 miles before I have to do this, should give me enough time to save up for the tools. Excellent video!
Hi there! DEFINITELY THE MOST DETAILLED WORK ON CLUTCH ONE CAN FIND!!! First of, good job ! and yes you are a guy with great patience, because even if you keep on saying " easy " , it was a struggle to put down the gearbox , but it was your first attempt too ! , So now thanks to you we know we have to rotate the gearbox upward before droppping it! You make our life much simplier with your printable pdf version ! GOD BLESS YOU! IT WILL BE FOR US LIKE A KIND OF BIBLE (OR CORAN OR TORAH ) for doing clutches! Could you tell me How far did you tilt your engine to the side (15 ° ??? ) Could you tell me How much clearance do we need between the bottom of the gear box and the floor so we can pull horizontally the gearbox once on the floor (40 cm mini clearance?) ? Again your video will be seen millions times, because like i said , there is no such a detailed step by step guide! Take care you and your favorite helper (your wife) Bye! :-)
Dear Farid thank you very much for all these nice words! I don't think I would be able to tell exact measurements, like degrees of engine tilt. When I lift the engine - I look how far I can lift so I don't brake anything, when I lower it, I think it was as far as engine support beam allowed me and of course look around as you have things that are still connected and sticking out of the engine. As for lifting the car, I have 2 trolley jacks that have maximum hight of 52cm. I didn't lift them to the maximum - if I do my garage hight will not allow me open bonnet. The higher you can get is the better. That jack adaptor you see in the video is too high and didn't allow me to simply lower gearbox that's why I had to improvise. The trickiest part is put the gearbox back - you definitely need a second person. The car in the video is on 422.000 miles now. By now I have replaced clutch 2 more times. When I did second time, I removed subframe (I have a video about subframe too). It was advised by someone in comments. There was much more space for moving gearbox around and you don't need to play "tetris". However on my third time I decided that removing subframe doesn't give as much advantage as it gives extra hassle. And few more things. When you put driveshaft back into wheel hub, all that hitting you see in the video with a hammer is not necessary. I'm going to cut it out. Simply move brake disc up and down to align splines. Also on my last clutch change I ordered parts from AutoDoc. Flywheel was ok, but the clutch pressure plate and friction disc where wrong. When I fitted it I didn't pay attention that it was too tight fit, I reassembled everything to find out that clutch doesn't work. So I had great pleasure to do clutch twice in 2 days as I bought correct parts locally from GSF. Don't do my mistake - make sure parts are correct! When you reconnect gear selector cables, that connection that you twist and turn - make sure you put it in all the way, otherwise gear selection won't be as smooth. When you done - try it first with wheels off the ground. I'm glad I did it when I fitted wrong clutch. Good luck! It's a bit fiddly, but it's doable (not a rocket science 😉)
Hi I used this video to help me replace the clutch and DMF on my passat B6 2.0 tdi ...getting the gearbox back in was tricky , I'm sure gearboxes have gotten heavier I use to lift them by hand when I did my fiesta and focus ...I suspect its just be me getting old though...very help full video ..thank you .
you would deserve a car lift and some more room around the car and you'll keep doing great videos with a little more comfort. Thanks for teaching all this stuff.
@@wawayltd I'm sure you will as you are very professional when working. I'm not sure offical mechanics will do better then you. By the way I have a question for you... You never work with impact wrenches or cordless tools that will ease some srewing/unscrewing steps after you break it lose. Any reason for that? Thanks for you reply.
I'm too slow for professional mechanic, it's all magic of video editing 😁 As for power tools, I have some now - I use them in my latest videos. I don't do many new videos recently, because I'm working on a completely new version of my website, plus I have to do my normal job (taxi) to pay my bills .. Thanks for all your nice wishes, I'll do my best to get this WheelsAndMotors going 👍
My flywheel was ok actually. The only reason I replaced it... Actually there were 2 reasons :) First - I heard some bad stories about flywheel falling apart, because apparently they recommended to be changed together with clutch. Not everyone agrees to that, I had comment below saying that it's a waste of money to change flywheel for no reason and they meant to last long... Second reason - I didn't know what brand I had before I took it apart, didn't know if it matches, so decided to put all new. In my previous car - Audi, I had problems with flywheel. I had bad judder when moving off or even going from 1st to 2nd. I think it happens when on dual-mass springs don't work anymore.
Nicely done, you took your time and were very careful with every bolt and component. one big mistake you made which was something Iearned after dozens of clutches I have fitted. Always Always put the gearbox back with 2-3 bolts and secure then an engine mount to secure the box then bleed the clutch right away to see if you have a good clutch, if you do brilliant. If you don't and you have to reassemble you don't have many bits and pieces to take off again to see the problem, apart from that great job!!!
Great video, thanks. It was easy sitting here in the comfort of my living room getting inspiration, now I have to order the parts and a couple of tools and get started on my car!
I pulled the whole front end off the Jetta, and then took the whole motor and box out. Old box was destroyed due to pressure plate failure. It dug a hole in the old transmission casing and caused fluid leaks. Replaced the box, and I'm currently waiting on my new pressure plate bolts
Common problem on these cars I have a VW Passat 2012 to stop and start clutch and flywheel has gone and master cylinder to replace full service history only 85000 miles with one owner not cheap lol but am loving the car will keep it so I will get it don... Nice very clean and clear video Thanks
I deactivate my start/stop system. Since I have done that video this car has done another 190.000 miles (it's 330K now). So just replaced flywheel and clutch again. This time I dropped subframe for easier manoeuvres of gearbox.
@@anamulhussain1635 They are there for safety reasons. In some countries it's illegal to drive without them - cars that don't have day lights have to put dipped beam on..
+Vasile Mărîi Thank you :) For some reason TH-cam doesn't allow me to reply to your comment, so I just post it here. Flywheel seemed to be fine, although I don't know what is the exact procedure of checking it properly, but driving felt ok, like there is nothing wrong, no judder. I only had the noise while pressing and releasing clutch and originally I wanted to replace just clutch and release bearing. But, I didn't know what brand was my clutch and flywheel and I wanted to do it in one go, and considering my mileage (146.000 miles = 234963 km), the guy from VW car parts shop also told me the "stories" and convinced me to get new flywheel as well.
WheelsAndMotors In the UK we replace four times as many flywheels as anywhere else in Europe. A DMF is designed to last the life of the car. As is a clutch, but people abuse clutches through bad driving. Unless the flywheel is knocking, I don't replace. You need to raise car higher to remove gearbox, as the method you use of lowering gearboxe then engine risks bending input shaft
Paul Passat Thank you for your comment. I will blame the car parts store guy - he convinced me to replace flywheel, although there are some bad stories on Internet forums + I didn't know the brand and I wanted to do it in one go. I agree about lowering - perhaps I should have lower it as low as I can straight away. But unfortunately, size of my garage doesn't alow me to raise this Sharan any higher - that was max - it was sticking into top shelves with its roof railings :)
Thank you bro my ford galaxy needed clutch and fly wheel changed because it made this grinding noise. The noise got worse and worse but now we have some idea whilst watching the mechanic

If you only replace gearbox clutch would stay as it is... I think so.. Depending on condition of your clutch, once you take gearbox off, there's an opportunity to replace clutch too. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with replacing just gearbox.
For anyone on a stage 2 tune. Contact your tuner and see if they can send you a stage one which allows you to keep your OEM clutch kit versus needing to go aftermarket

Thanks 👍 And Thanks for the advice!
Thank you! Your video was very helpful when I replaced the clutch. I saved a lot of money!! I am very grateful for your help.
You're very welcome 👍
Power tools optional as long as you know how to use them... ;-)
Thanks 😊👍
I was thinking this would be similar for my 2011 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 tdi with DSG automatic 6 speed. Torque specs and steps pretty much identical, is That’s correct? I also have a 2007 Volkswagen GTI manual. 🙂
DSG is different, maybe you take gearbox off in a similar way, but the rest is very different.
you are on my TOP 3 best videos with " how to " !!! Congratulation . Also I must send my thanks to your wife who help a lot. Very good video both.
Thanks Nicolici! Glad if it helps 😊👍
I did my alhambra in 8hrs by myself and in all honesty the hardest part of the job was getting the bloody differential to clear the engine cradle.. Very tight but nothing brute force and ignorance did sort lol. Brilliant video my friend..
Thanks David :) And well done - in 8 hours..
Hey man, I own a 2012 tdi jetta too! This video is WONDERFUL! I just hit 100k miles and i just bought a waterpump/ cambelt kit and a new clutch, i get a vacation coming up in August and i plan on doing both with the help of your videos. Wish me luck! With your very well done videos i doubt i will need any! :)
Oh yeah, once you get on - it's not that scary. You're welcome 👍

Sir You are an absolute genius. Thank you so much for making these kind of video's. I can not thank you enough 👍👍👍👍
And you girlfriend is very good at filming your work 👌 I have seen many video's where that was a big problem but she NAILED it 😎

probably the first video of this type on youtube, where the mechanic really use his brain and bother with covering the intake pipe and airbox with some rubber :D :D in so many videos they absolutely don´t bother, even when it´s so important, especially when working outside under the sky :D
Thanks! Maybe just because I'm not really a mechanic 😁
Wow! Thank you so much for the amazing detail and patience from you both. Specially thankful for showing even the stressful and frustrating areas of removal with such humor. Easy peasy!!! Great job!!!

Another great video from you👍 tip: to block driveshaft for spinning on removing bolts, stick screwdriver in brake disc and let it lean on caliper bracket 😎
Thanks for good advice. I was struggling with those bolts :)
Good thinking! 👍
Thank you for this video. I changed my gearbox on my mk6 golf gt tdi thanks to you! The who'll process is the same as your Sharan!

Thanks Mark :) It's not that scary once you get your hands around it.
Compliments to your wife for the excellent video quality.
Thank you, Andre :)
Hi there!
DEFINITELY THE MOST DETAILLED WORK ON CLUTCH ONE CAN FIND!!!
First of, good job ! and yes you are a guy with great patience, because even if you keep on saying " easy " , it was a struggle to put down the gearbox , but it was your first attempt too ! ,
So now thanks to you we know we have to rotate the gearbox upward before droppping it!
You make our life much simplier with your printable pdf version ! GOD BLESS YOU! IT WILL BE FOR US LIKE A KIND OF BIBLE (OR CORAN OR TORAH ) for doing clutches!
Could you tell me How far did you tilt your engine to the side (15 ° ??? )
Could you tell me How much clearance do we need between the bottom of the gear box and the floor so we can pull horizontally the gearbox once on the floor (40 cm mini clearance?) ?
Again your video will be seen millions times, because like i said , there is no such a detailed step by step guide!
Take care you and your favorite helper (your wife)
Bye!
@@wawayltd thanks so much for your time with all these precious details. Take care
Good job brother. Much respect. This is what the internet is for.
Thanks Mike :)
I just followed you instructions in replacing my clutch. They were great!

You're very welcome 😊. Maybe that's because Fiesta and Focus had smaller gearboxes... Don't know.
Glad if it helps 👍
Best video I've found so far on clutch and flywheel replacement :-D thanks for sharing!
Thanks :)
you would deserve a car lift and some more room around the car and you'll keep doing great videos with a little more comfort.
Thanks for teaching all this stuff.
Thanks Francisco! One day I'll have a good garage 🤓
I'm too slow for professional mechanic, it's all magic of video editing 😁
As for power tools, I have some now - I use them in my latest videos.
I don't do many new videos recently, because I'm working on a completely new version of my website, plus I have to do my normal job (taxi) to pay my bills ..
Thanks for all your nice wishes, I'll do my best to get this WheelsAndMotors going 👍
Sounds good! Thanks for having took the time to reply me.
this is the best video on the internet!
Wow! Thanks Ross 😷👍
Thanks for an informative & motivating video. Going to do my flywheel soon. Cheers.
Thanks Craig :) I'll make some more about that car.
I have to change the clutch and flywheel on my Mk5 golf soon, your engine looks very similar so i think this will be useful, thanks for the video 👍🏻
Thanks :) Hope it helps.
WheelsAndMotors what symptoms did you get that the flywheel was bad by the way? I have a rattling noise and a slight engine shake now and then? Thanks
WheelsAndMotors ok thank you for the reply. :)
Thanks for the advice and nice words about the video :) By the way, how should I check clutch without starting the engine - just change gears?
Should be able to bleed the clutch without the engine being on. Just loosen the slave cylinder nozzle and pump the clutch.
Great video, thanks. It was easy sitting here in the comfort of my living room getting inspiration, now I have to order the parts and a couple of tools and get started on my car!
You can do it, Andrew! :)
I pulled the whole front end off the Jetta, and then took the whole motor and box out.
Old box was destroyed due to pressure plate failure. It dug a hole in the old transmission casing and caused fluid leaks.
Replaced the box, and I'm currently waiting on my new pressure plate bolts
Wow! Sorry you have such a disaster..
I think I will do the same deactivate my stop start too and take my day time lights off too
@@anamulhussain1635 What's wrong with the daylights?
@@wawayltd they stay on all the time plus I don't like them lol
But unfortunately, size of my garage doesn't alow me to raise this Sharan any higher - that was max - it was sticking into top shelves with its roof railings :)
you have one heck of a good helper

@@wawayltd too much free time with this lockdown... It started with looking at EGR and DPF for my TDI, few videos later, I ended up here.
Hello, in elsawin i find the couple for track rod end nut is just 20Nm + 90°. i think the 100Nm (as you said) is for the sportive model.
I think if after reaching 20Nm, you turn another 90°, total torque value could be about 100Nm. Also torque values differ whether it's aluminium or steel arm.

@@wawayltd I have done automatics transmissions Before never really manual. Was wondering if I only replace the transmission and not the clutch, do I have to worry about clutch adjustments or anything like that as far as you know? Thanks again!!
If you only replace gearbox clutch would stay as it is... I think so.. Depending on condition of your clutch, once you take gearbox off, there's an opportunity to replace clutch too. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with replacing just gearbox.
but I wanted to know if you put the safety putty on the threaded logs that go on the pressure plate
I don't put anything, just bolts, never had any trouble...
