I love love love this new recipe. I am in the middle of a giant paper mache project, (a semi life-size pumpkinhead from the 80's movie) and this is so much smoother than the original clay recipe I found on your site last year. Thanks for doing all the hard work experimenting, and passing it on to us..you're awesome!
Lance Henriksen rocks!
Ive been using her regular clay and it hardens like concrete rock! I havent tried this new one but Im sure its just as amazing...the woman is a goddess of clay creations!
Can u plz share the link or her regular clay
That's a great video. You are very generous sharing what you have learned. Thank you.
OK
This is wonderful. I use other types of clay and I have been looking for one to sculpt with. Thank you so much!!!!! I love your cat.
This is amazing stuff. I use it on a lot of my sculptures - I add a bit of water and it sticks nicely. Thank u for sharing ur awesome recipes. I want to get into the paper mache but I'm still intimidated lol, but I will soon.
I have tried numerous recipes and I have finally found the right one, cheers for that.
Hi Jonnie, I recently came across your work and I just wanted to tell you what an inspiration you have been for me. I love working with clay though it is years since I did any as i no longer have a kiln and didn't know about this type of clay. I am now beginning to work with clay again so thankyou so much
I love your videos but this one because of your kitty loving you at end ❤
Thank you so much for all of your sharing… I really enjoy watching you work and hearing your wisdom about your art… I learned so much from you... thank you
I think this is the best recipe I have seen
I'm glad you like it. Have you tried it yet?
You're welcome! I hope you'll post a photo of your deer on my blog when you get it done. I'd love to see it.
Thank you for this great video. Your dear little cat was miaowing at you the whole time wanting your love and attention!
Yes, she heard me talking to the camera and wanted in on the conversation. 😄
Sounds amazing! I'm gonna use this on my Majora's mask replica from The Legend Of Zelda
The clay does dry very hard, but it will soak up water if it's left out in the rain. Some people have used the original recipe outside - they seal the piece first with deck or concrete sealer, paint, then coat several times with a waterproof varnish, preferably one that has a UV filter so the sun doesn't destroy the finish. I haven't done any tests yet to find out how long they'll last.
mix flying all over...it's the design of the mixing bowl. Centrifugal force against the sloped side of the bowl will send ingredients everywhere! Use a straight sided bowl and that will stop. (Grandma taught me that when making cookie dough.)
centrifugal force doesn't exist

This is a brilliant video, easy to understand and a clear presentation. I am excited to try it out. Thank you for sharing this with us.
You're welcome. :)
I love this clay !Thank you so much !I am currently working on a deer head using your techniques..i am finding this medium quite gratifying to work with ..it moves along very quickly !Thanks for the tips and inspiration !You Rock !
First of all like to thankyou for being kind to share yr recipe, glad to know that toilet paper can be used instead of newspaper cos it's easier to manage .
You're welcome. Enjoy!
i was oohing and ahhing when your cat stepped into the frame, boy does she love you!
At first I thought the cat was going to bite her, then it just rubed its face into hers. So lovingly, and then looking at her for a response, then do it again...lol cats.
@@johnabbot1585 the cat was saying "enough talking to the people it's my turn now. Hello, my turn, my turn " 😄😄😄
What a clever idea! I'll definitely keep this one in mind.
+julie cream You can't use pipe joint compound in this recipe. It's a totally different thing. However, you can use newspaper, as long as you soak it longer to allow it time to disintigrate. Lots of people use recycled paper. If you don't have access to wallboard joint compound, do a search for "paper pulp recipe." It's usually just mushed up paper and some sort of glue or paste.
thank you so much for answering so quickly!
is there any substitute for joint compound? could you answer quickly if you can please? also could you look up 'ted's first day' and subscribe to me please?
julie cream I don't know of any substitute for joint compound.
ok, well is there anything you can use apart from joint compound to make this recipe please?
also do you use this by spreading it on to the base or mold it like clay?
My son found your video on making your Snowy Owls in doing research for a school project. We were going to make his model using strips and newspaper but after seeing those beautiful results we decided to follow that tutorial and couldn't figure out what you were using for your "clay". So naturally we had to search your videos for more information and finally came upon this one. It is the one we will be using. it looks as if this project will turn out well and we will be sure to post pictures. THANK YOU!
+Devra Robertson I hope it turned out nice.
+Ultimate Paper Mache they turned out excellently! They are being featured in our local history museum over this summer. I'm so proud of him and thankful for your recipe, without it the project wouldn't have had the same quality.
I FREAKING love you!
I'm a cosplayer, and a lot of my current projects have a lot of fine, smooth details. This is going to be perfect for getting the look I want!
Can't wait to try this. Thanks for your generosity in sharing this with us.
Hi Jonni! I just wondered a few things about this clay. Aproximately how long does it take for it to dry completely? And how hard does it become?
I've discovered that this recipe works excellently with silicone molds. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Hi Linsey. I'm curious - do you use it as a thin layer in the mold, or are you casting fairly thick pieces? And how big are they? I would love to know more.
Ultimate Paper Mache I cast horns in a 2-part press mold I made from caulk. The first set was solid. They dried fine without warping or cracking. The thickest part for each half was maybe 5/8"? They were heavyish, so I made a 2nd hollow set (I used tin foil filler until they had dried some). The walls are maybe 1/4" thick. They are far more lightweight. The tips are quite thin. Both sets are extremely durable and bone-like, dry! So 3D forms totally work. They are springbok antelope horns ~7" long.
Also - I made some very thin (1/8"?) pressed slabs with textures, in some silicone molds, to replicate some cut metal designs, and it works great in thin press molds as well. You can make faux metal jewelry with some gilded effects.
So many possible applications!
That's great info, Linsey. Would you be interested in writing a guest post for my blog to show people how to do it? If that sounds like fun, just let me know. www.ultimatepapermache.com/contact
on another note.... OMG YOUR CAT IS LOVELY!!!!! kitty!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Aww thanks!
Thanks for showing us your beautiful kitty❤️
Patricia
She is just the cutest is is so beautiful she reminds me of my grandmother
Thanks Jonni! Your tutorials are easy to follow. God bless you!
can i use Cake Flour as Replacement for All purpose Flour?
+Winshard Yes, that should work just fine.
Thank you~! You're a amazing at what you do!
You could use the fast-setting paper and paste technique that I used for the Pantalone mask. You can find it on my channel. There may be a substitute for the corn starch, but you would need to do some experiments - maybe just using the white flour, and leaving out the starch would work.
Thanks again for your generosity in sharing your genius!
I've just finished making this clay. Earlier tonight I bought air-dry clay from Walmart for $20. I made your clay in less time than it took me to earn that $20. I'm taking the store bought back.
Thank you so very much! The consistency is perfect!!
Gosh - I'm glad you like it. Have fun!
That cat is too sweet! Definitely going to give this a go :)
I agree with you this looks amazing and a lot of fun.
Your amazing. You make fantastic art work, plus you share what you know with us all. God bless you and stay blessed. My wife, kids and I love your videos and your work. Will learn a lot from you. Thanks from me my family. xx
I absolutely applaud your efforts at making your own air dry clay. By what I've seen on this video including your tips this is an excellent clay and considering the money savings involved no one can go wrong making this. I cannot thank you enough for freely sharing your creation with us. Goodness only knows I would have never come up with this on my own. You can be sure I will be making this as soon as I can. Halloween is less than 2 months away and I want to slam into this. I do have one question however. If making small figurine type items with this what would you guestimate the dry time for? I just need an idea to go by so I can plan. Thank you again Jonni.
If you put a thin layer over an armature, it should dry within a couple of days. Making it thin is really important.
Thank you so much for both videos and the precise instructions. I intend to have a go once i locate some joint compound. So pleased to see the comment below telling us that "yeso" here in Spain is the equivalent product. I suppose you could buy it in powder form and mix it up as this would be a good bit cheaper. Anyway thank you again as i now understand how to go about it.
thank u for da tutorial it really helped me in making clay
By the way, there are some fantastic books about sculpting heads (usually in clay) that you might find at your local library. And some of the authors also have videos here on TH-cam.
Thanks a lot! I'm gonna try it, I love your art and your cat!
THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAD BEEN LOOKING HIGH AND LOW FOR A CLAY LIKE THIS. YOUR A LIFE SAVER.
Gosh, I'm glad you like it. Have fun! 😀
She is so cool
Thanks for writing out the recipe, that is one of the many awesome things you do.
Love you and your videos!
Anna Bell I know this was long ago but where is this paper clay recipe written I can't find it anywhere
#Michael Abel I don't know if you can use dry joint compound or not - you would have to do an experiment to find out. I never get mold, because I dry my pieces quickly, and then seal them so they won't absorb water from the air. Mold can't grow without water.
I would think that you COULD use dry joint compound. You only add water to get the mud, so you could use it dry I would think and adjust the amount of oil you use to make up for the water you aren't using
+Drapeta Berry As a professional drywaller, I would NOT recommend using dry joint compound, reason being is that most every dry compound has a set drying time, for example: 90 minute compound powder will set up in 90 minutes, all it needs is moisture and the oil is enough to to cause the reaction it needs to set up and harded. However it may slow the drying time of the joint compound which will give you a longer working time, but it would not be good for long term storage as it will be set up and dry within hours unless you add a small amount of vinegar to slow the drying time even more.
From my work with joint compound in my house, I learned that the dry compound mixed with water dries on the wall due to a chemical reaction with the air, that is why it dries quicker. The "mud" that you buy readi-made in the tubs takes 24 hours to dry, and it is not drying due to a chemical reaction. They are two different things.
is it better to make a clay with ingredients that dry out about at the same or similar amount of time and if you agree do you have any suggestions? thanks
I've used the dry compound and just added more water. Or just not squeezed out as much water from the paper pulp and left it fairly wet.
Can't wait to try this for my elephants that are in the works. I get the water out of the paper by putting the 'pulp' in an old kitchen towel and twisting it to wring the water out. Thanks for keeping us informed and excited to try new things.
Yes, the air-dry clay requires the joint compound. Why don't you want to use it? It doesn't cost very much.
Hi Lynda. The air-dry clay would work for this purpose, but be sure to make up a small batch and test it yourself before your class. The issue to worry about is the dexterity that might be needed to press a bit of the clay thinly onto the paper mache. If you put on a thick layer, it will take a very long time to dry. Also, do a search for the rhino video on this channel to see a few things I've discovered about how to use it. I'll put up another video soon to make this info easier to find.
Name for your clay~ Jonni's Best Air Clay....cause it is. Or, name it what your dot com is...Ultimate Paper Mache~ Air Dry Clay.

I just made and used it. I love it. Thank you for your time and effort in showing us how to make it.
I'm glad you liked it.
I love you and your videos!!!!!!! 😋
Thanks for all of the great tips. The final product looks so smooth...can't wait to make some. You did mention using bleach to resist mould but for those who are adverse to the idea of bleach, you can use clove oil. Perhaps using distilled water might be a better option too, as the bacteria in the water turns things sour. Just a thought.
Thanks Leanda. Good tips.
I have heard of people adding Tea Tree oil to keep it from molding.
U are so cute I love u
thank you so much for this. I had only started searching and found creative mom's video which linked to you as her inspiration. I'm a total novice at 47 (well apart from plasticine as a kid which didn't enthrall me much! Too many camps to build!) Keen to try a few ideas and wondered if there was a diy recipe for good air drying clay. Now I found yours and I've seen what others can do with your recipe, I've got to give it a try. Finding time could be an issue - unfortunately not building camps anymore - advising the kids how to now ;) Thank you again for sharing. Wonderful tutorial.
I do hope you find time - why should kids have all the fun? :)
I’m looking forward to trying your new clay recipe. I made a Christmas tree last year using your paper machete recipe and it came out great. I do want to try a smoother textured clay and I think yours will work great. thanks for sharing. 😁🌹
Hope you like it!
Wonderful recipe, thanks! For those using shredded paper (I brought home a large bag of shredded paper from work), approximately 6 cups of paper shreds = 1 cup of paper pulp once soaked and squeezed, then I mix that in with the rest of the ingredients and works great.
Thank you! That's really helpful.
Thank you so much for sharing. I use your paper clay recipe for my Halloween and Christmas displays.
Great! I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Thank you for sharing ... I have been desperate for something that I can make and reveal to use another day.... and that is such a beautiful affectionate cat that obviously loves their Mum
Hi Jonni, not sure if you have tried this before, but from your experience, do you think the paper mache clay recipe will stick well to stretched canvas? (That is, to be used to make "relief" sculptures on top) Or, maybe.. on wood?
Since the cloth canvas is kind of flimsy.. would the canvas need to be covered with plaster cloth to harden, or would the bare canvas work ok? (If this is unknown, I could just go by trial and error :) but if you have any experience, I would love to hear)
My fear is that it will delaminate, or crack or eventually come off the canvas.. perhaps instead of cloth canvas, the rectangle wood frame would need to be covered in some mesh, so the clay binds on both sides of the mesh..? Thanks for any ideas :) (ooh! One last question, will wet paper mache clay stick to old, dry paper mache clay?) :)
Yes, you really can use the new stuff for the eyelids and other fine details. And it would be totally reasonable to use the original paper mache recipe for large areas, because it would go on a lot faster. Then use this goo for the finer details. I have never used the Model Magic, but it sounds like a nice product. And I like the word "magic" in the name. By the way, have you posted any of your sculptures on my blog yet?
Do you mean the portrait of Dionysus, behind me in the video? I did put a post about it on my blog (use the search bar to find it) but no tutorial. I used doll compound for the bust, in a plaster mold. Several people have recently told me that the new recipe for air dry clay is working well in molds, and I'll do some experiments soon.
It really works mam I have already using this clay with some different measurements....its very smooth to sculpt
I'm glad you like it. 😊
Ooo this recipe excites me!! In the video it looks fabulous. As soon as I get more glue I am making this. I just made your other paper clay recipe and it's quite "sticky" for lack of a better word...could be my drywall compound, or just that I'm not used to this clay yet, but I am excited to try it out. I love that you showed us how to measure the toilet paper, because that was something I was struggling with. This recipe looks perfect. Thanks so much! =) ♫
I hope you like it. The original recipe was sticky so it would stick nicely to an armature. You do need to use a glue and water mixture to make sure the new air dry clay sticks to things - but other than that, it works really well, It feels like Activa Paper Clay.
I’m so glad that I found your channel and thank you for the recipe ❤️❤️
You're welcome!
Thank you Jonni for sharing this recipe. I made this yesterday and looking forward to the curing.
Jonni thank you for this video I have been looking for a dough like this for my papier-mache projects. I needed smooth and I think this will work. Don't know how it took me so long to find this one. I have seen so many of your great videos. Again, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Have fun!
The queen of paper mache. Much respect
It's very kind of you to share your recipe with everyone and I appreciate it. I'm unlikely to try it out immediately but I very much hope to soon. I've been preparing to make some sculptures with paper mache and cloth and just sculpted parts of my halloween costume that way but I find the lack of detail that really allows for disappointing so I thought I'd look for something I can sculpt over it in places. This looks great for that, since I use glue for the top layer anyway so it seems it would adhere easily.
Back in myyyyy day... we used wallpaper paste for all of the layers. Glue is probably just as expensive but the layer under the surface can be made using only flour and water! I wish the internet were more of a thing back then so I could have learned all this nifty make-it-at-home stuff to save money. But I'm most happy that this seems sliiiightly more non-toxic than the (likely wallet-breaking) air dry clay you get at the store! Hooray!
Cheers.

+Salitora Have fun!
Hi Jonni ,
So its 5:00 am New York time and I successfully completed a batch. while kneading and rolling out a piece to form,
a potential product name came to mind for thought: "Wonder Clay".
The Clay is everything said would be and super easy to make following your directions and EXACT recipe.
Hugs,
Sal
+Sal Marino That's a nice name for it. If anyone ever figures out how to market the stuff, I think that's the name they should use for it... ;)
+Ultimate Paper Mache Yea',, glad you liked the name "Wonder Clay".
Um, are you aware you've already began marketing Wonder Clay through its exposure and excellent feedback right here. ill bet if you offered sales of pre-mixed" at the end of your video, it will sell.
its likely many would prefer purchasing, rather mix themselves !!
Thanks,I'm ambitiously rebuilding my miniscule backyard "garden" will make video of the results when done some jonnis paper machete finishing touches!
I know this is a little late but I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing this! I love this recipe and love how it works with my projects!
I'm glad you like it!
The ropes/ noodles are called coils, liked a coiled snake. ;)
Well - that makes sense. I'll try to remember "coils" not noodles, for next time. :)
Thank you so much for this lovely dough recipe. I was super to work with and the results so utterly pleasing :)
Interesting! Now I'm getting so many good ideas, it's going to be hard to pick one. Thanks, everyone!
This is awesome for IOD molds as a air dry clay.
I use it to make molds for furniture applications
Great!
Thank you so much for this recipe I’m definitely going to have a go😊 But could you tell me if this would work without the joint compound and just glue please? And also what is it like when dried, does this recipe crack at all?👍🏻
This recipe needs the joint compound. If you want to use paper pulp without it, do a search for "paper pulp." Also this website has a lot of tutorials that use that recipe, which is much more traditional. It doesn't work the same, and it isn't nearly as smooth, but it works. www.papiermache.co.uk/
The air dry clay recipe dries quite hard. I've never had it crack, but it does shrink. If you put it over something that's really hard, it would crack as it dries.
Thanks for the mineral oil substitute option Jonni! Read how linseed oil is self igniting- pretty scary. Some people also got sick off the smell. There are warnings to dispose of anything like- rags- paper towels-work gloves- etc that has any linseed on it since it is highly flammable; not just something that can combust in a container-which was alarming enough!
SilverScreenJean Yes, that' true about the linseed oil, but I think the problem is usually encountered by people using it to polish wood furniture. If you soak a rag in just about any kind of oil, and you don't dispose of it properly, it's not good. Fortunately, adding a few tablespoons to this recipe poses no problems, but I now prefer the mineral oil. It smells better. :)
According to one of my readers, the product is called "joint finish" in Australia. There's a page on my blog that you can find using the search term "what is joint compound called" and a number of people have offered their suggestions.
I am missing something...
I watched this 3 times and never
SAW you put in the joint compound...
and I know you did, you talked about it...
I love your ART and everything you do...
Thank you for sharing this wonderful videos...
You might want to take a look at the next video I made, with more detailed instructions about how to measure and mix the recipe. You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
Thank you for sharing this recipe. Would I have any mold/mildew concerns with this mixture?
Yes, some of the ingredients are organic, so you need to use up the batch you make quickly, and dry the piece quickly to prevent the growth of mold. After it's dry and you've painted it, you'll want to seal it with varnish to make sure it stays dry and doesn't pick up moisture from the air.
your compound seems more fluid than the filler I have got at the moment ... so bit confused about that....think I might be using the wrong stuff...it is for filling cracks in walls...but not sure if it will work with your new smoother clay recipe...or will it?... yours is also white, mine is grey and firm but sticky...sorry just a bit unsure of what will work and the differences. guess the only way to find out is to give it a try LOL and read your blog on this subject :) have a great day.
I think drywall joint compound and spackling paste are different, but they both might work. I haven't tried the spackling paste to find out, though. Your local hardware should have joint compound.
Hi ,have a great works! Very good recipe! Thanks for this video. I don't have Elmer's glue. Vinilic glue it's same? Can use also ceramic powder and not compound? ....sorry for my bad English
So cool, never came to my mind to use toilet paper which makes all the sense...I wonder how durable the finished piece would be if used varnish, and what kind of varnish would you use ? Let's say I wanted to do an ornament in the garden that might be exposed to some rains for instance?
Thank you so much for your quick answer...I have omitted the oil and have made my first ball of dough & will let you know here about whether epoxy resin will be compatible. Many thanks!
Did u find out if Epoxy resin compatible?
Hello there..... gosh I'm glad I found your video, I've watched so many paper clay (how to )video's lately I wasn't sure what I'd come up with lol... But I'm going to give this one a try, seems better then some, and not complicated at all... thank you for sharing
You're welcome. Have fun with your project. If you'd like to show it off when it's done you can leave an image in a comment on the Daily Sculptors page on my site - or just drop by and say hi. :) www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page
I love your videos, I just learned about these paper mac he yesterday, and I have watched several videos on the different ways to do it and yours seem to be the best way! You have inspired me to do my own I may do one later on today!
They make it easier to mix really thick dough - but a lot of people have told me that you can mix the clay without them. Just go as far as you can, and when the motor on your mixer gets tired, you can knead in the rest of the ingredients by hand.
hi i loved your tutorial but do you need to use joint compound
If you don't live in the US, the joint compound might be called something else. You can do a search on my blog for the terms "what is joint compound called in my country." If you do live in the US, just go to the hardware store and ask for Drywall joint compound. There is no product that can be used instead. If you don't want to use it, you'll need to find another recipe.
How long will this last if kept properly sealed? Should it be kept in the fridge?
It will last at least a week if you keep it sealed. If you need to keep it longer, a fridge or even a freezer is a good idea.
I have just followed your link about joint compound and i see you do not recommend buying it in powder form so i will look for Yeso ready to use. Thanks again for all your help.
im going to have to give this recipe a try. looking for cheap alternatives to making molds that will hold imprint details for my plastic resin castings.
Thank you so much for sharing us your videos very helpful an a good tutorial Im a begginer.
more luck and good health.
You're welcome! Have fun. 😀
What an awesome video. So helpful. So clear and instructive. Was planning on going out to buy air-drying polymer clay to make Hallowe'en skulls but estate that I can do it myself in the kitchen. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to watching many more of your videos!
Thanks, Daniel. I hope you liked it when you tried it.
Hi grandma .Pls tell me can i store this clay for 6 months without fridge.God bless u with good health. I can use for bottle art.
This looks awesome. If I ever have a spare $10 or $20 laying around for joint compound and mineral oil I might try to make this.
Enjoyed this video. Very informative. Loved seeing your beautiful kitty too!
