Here's the thing, the story Sjin told is not true but is rather a commonly believed myth, truth is, is that blood does not have the correct properties to quench a blade.
@@berkleyhuffman48 on top of what berkley said driving a blade that has not hardened yet into a solid mass would only bend the blade especially if the sword was still red hot
Ben: When? Sjin: When? What an interesting question. Ben: I'm asking you since when did you start using K̶y̶o̶u̶k̶a̶ ̶S̶u̶i̶g̶e̶t̶s̶u̶ Sjin Facts? Sjin: Then let me ask you this. When did you think that I wasn't using K̶y̶o̶u̶k̶a̶ ̶S̶u̶i̶g̶e̶t̶s̶u̶ Sjin Facts?
Fun fact: Vikings I believe would add animal bones to the metal of weapons thinking it would add the strength of the animal. And it actually did increase the strength because the bone essentially made low grade steel
Kind of. They didn't try to straight up kill each other because you would have the people (or the highest nobles present) decide if the victor should execute his opponent or not at the end. So spearing someone through the head three minutes in was kind of a buzzkill.
It's always funny to me that when imagine great warriors from the past being big hulking men covered head to toe with heavy armor, but reality most of them were probably only 5'5.
They also flooded arenas and had ship battles inside which is mindbogglingly fascinating from an ancient engineering perspective. Like I cant imagine I'd ever be down with theatricized slaughter but those would be neat to watch
For some reason, I feel compelled to say that Gladiators fighting to the death was looked down apon, and quite rare. It was more like modern-day boxing, but with tools and weapons. Heck, they even had referees who could pause the game if one of them tripped. And while some of them were slaves, when they were freed, they decided to stay gladiators
They did actually quench swords in olive oil, because it adds a protective layer to the blade preventing rust, and allowing the blade to flex instead of break. They use this in making Toledonese steel, which is where it’s flexible properties come from.
I mean, blacksmiths still use low flash point oil to this day for quenching. You should NEVER quench in water. Water is too good at its job, and turns into water vapor while the blade quenches, this creates a super heated steam tube inside of your quench. You do not quench in acid - you etch in acid. Etching is used in damascus blades, to oxidize an outer layer of pattern that you've pre-fused by alloying steels together. Master blacksmiths made some damn gorgeous patterns in this way
@@davidenwah3413 no you can't as the hotter acid gets the more volatile it gets, it would melt the blade (or produce poison gas) if it's the same type of acid used to etch the sword
@@strider04 nah sorry man, you literally could use it. I've seen it done. What kind of metal is this hypothetical blade made from? That will determine the acid used and it's concentration + strength. A heated blade will definitely create a gas but that neither here nor there in relation to using the acid as a cooling agent. There's no acid you would use for etching that when catalyzed by heat, would melt a metal. By melt I mean warp, ruin the blade
As a US citizen, I can unfortunately say John Quincy Adams and the hollow earth thing is actually quite true 😅 he believed the earth was hollow and wanted to drill into said earth for resources not necessarily mole people. But with how long ago it was, who knows 😂
I like how in this same video Ben goes from "Rythian shot near a barrel that was close to me, his murder was entirely justified." immediately to "You can't blame a man for barrel killing."
You don't quench in acid. It's still oil. Water cools the material too fast which causes it to be excessively brittle. Cooling rate of oil is lower so it turns out nice and hard but won't snap or shatter.
I feel like Rhythian encounters any given situation in TTT and wonders, “what is the worst possible thing to do in this situation?”, and then does that thing 9 times out of 10
Well, damascus isn’t quenched in acid. You can either fold the steel tons of times to get the pattern out, or after you’ve quenches it oil you can try to do an acid etching. Oil is usually the way to go for quenching, cause water makes things mega hard and brittle. Just depends on the tools.
Well both very good arguments but we're not gonna talk about the fact that sjin I actually think this is a great idea to quench a blade by driving it through someone, i mean the fact that the bone could damage the blade exponentially blood isint that good for quenching, i could be wrong but i felt like i had to say somthing
Well technically the quenching method depends on what steel you're using, some steels must be quenched in water like W1 steel, but others are quenched in oil like 5160. Acid is only to bring out the pattern in folded steel.
The Damascus pattern doesn't come from the quench, it comes from using different types of steel in the forging process, which show up differently during the etching process.
Yo all the people who keep asking, no Sjin being in this video doesn't mean he's no longer under investigated, hes not allowed to be on the main Twitch channel. That's why he's not in ozone but is in this
"quenched them in acid" they still quench them in oil, motor, vegetable whatever depending on what you can afford or prefer. Acid is used for etching a blade that uses multiple metals known as Damascus .
Damascus refers to a method of making higher quality blade steel before they could make high quality spring steel like they have today. Not a type of metal, or a type of blade. That acid etching that you speak of was not real Damascus steel but a process to trick people into buying inferior quality metal, or for looks.
Nowadays they quench steel in oil; acid is used after the quench to reveal patterns in a Damascus blade. You can learn more about the world of blacksmiths in the History channel show Forged in Fire, where four modern blacksmiths go head-to-head to create fully functional weapons.
