I knew little to nothing about music in high school. Writing playing nor producing. So there's MORE appreciation now of all three, the talent and execution live, then the writing, and finally the execution album wise. I just always knew I liked this band and the first two albums are rock canon, desert island disc type albums.

A long time ago, I'd read an article in some rock magazine (might've been Spin, I don't recall exactly) thst purported thst Living Colour was honoring thier relstionship with all forms of Black music. Now, 30+ or more years later, I am finally witness to what that rock mag writer was referring to specifically, as witnessed in this first song about New Jacks, where the bassist lamps out during the middle bit, and gives honor to House music by transforming the amalgam of sonic mishmash into a perfect House beat weirdo clusterfuck. It's a seminal moment of a thing to set your ears upon. THis is Living Colour in thier fiercest, no glamour boy lion-like prime. And I'm so proud of what they accomplished for rock. My genertion had the goddamn BEST artists, bar none. I'm proud and blessed to be granted permission to listen and enjoy this genius stuff. Oh hell yes, the band just went into Bill Withers and now they're doin something ELSE crazy I've never heard before! FFS listen to this great music! WOw.

Time's Up came out when I was 17 years old. It came out right before I started my senior year in high school. I've rediscovered it recently and when I hear it I'm transported right back into 1990-91. Living Colour really spoke to me, along with other black rock bands like Fishbone, Bad Brains, and 24-7 Spyz. Between them and groups like Public Enemy, I learned to despise racism. I was an up and coming drummer playing in a hard rock trio and Will Calhoun was a huge influence on my playing. Will, Stewart Copeland, and Bill Bruford were my favorites and still are. I remember the first time I played Open Letter To A Landlord for my friends. During the intro, they had these looks on their faces as if to say, "What is this ni**er shit?!" But I told them to be patient and open-minded because LC was about to kick it in. They knew "Cult of Personality" but that was it. It didn't take long for them to come around and recognize the badass talent that they were hearing.

( quick mention to "Death" and "Pure Hell" for paving the way and bridging the gap .. throw Mother's finest in there hahah) i adore all these bands ... And the American Treasure that is the Isley ...i mean Living Colour ... Long may they rock and create ... I miss em ... Much love and respect ..
P.s. thank you Little Richard.. the architect of rock n roll ... I just hope the youth realize and appreciate rock n roll ... And lets see some more brothers rockin'... You invented it ...lets go !!..
And while im at it thank you to the one and only Louis Armstrong for setting the template for modern music .. I'm eternally grateful.. once again my highest love and respect...you've given us the greatest gift ..... All my love ❤️

how many black rock bands can you think of? Assuming you mean hard rock and metal and not blues or funk. I can't name very many.

Agree. Especially back in this era. We had 24/7 Spyz, Fishbone, Bad Brains. That alone is pretty hard to beat!
