    Awesome video!! Everything about it is great- the interview, the music, the instruments, etc. It was so much fun to watch.

    I would imagine psychoacoustics also playing a pretty big role in how we perceive these synth timbres as approximations of acoustic instruments. It's classical, it's Bach, so our brain is expecting to hear french horns, cellos and what have you, auto-correcting the input from our ears. Fascinating project, this, all the best! :)

    I saw them at the Octagon in Reading around this time and it was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately a concert scheduled for Cardiff landed right in the middle of the pandemic and consequently didn’t happen…and we’d bought Will some top quality gherkins to leave for him at the encore. Sorry Will but we ate those. I hope they tour again.

    I liked this and I liked Will's overall views and philosophies. Very smart to use the wind controllers as well. Very well done.

    Excellent preview / interview. The Ensemble sounds great.
    It is a relief to know I'm not the only one with tuning issues. I can understand why
    Dave Smith moved away from analog oscillators.

    Superb stuff and good on will for doing this! I hope there's a lot more from this mob to come. Id love to see/hear this and would love even more to be a part of it, but i can't read music anymore to save my system 100 ;-)

    Fascinating project, wish I lived in the UK so I could see a gig in person. BTW Moog rhymes with "vogue". That's probably why Moog put out a synth called the Rogue.

    Nice to see this happening. It's been tried before with small synths - there was an ensemble in the 70s or early 80s with Francis Monkman and others - but there's a lot still to explore with this approach. Work clearly still needs to be done with the Bach, but of course these are rehearsals. I'd like to see this group in concert.

    Saw the show at St.Georges Bristol very enjoyable.(No so keen on the slo-mo Tim Henman video though.)
    Now all we need is for you two to work on an album like Black Cherry again, I love that album.

    gr8... started on the same idea in the late 70s with a few friends... recreating an orchestra with analogue synths (anyway, there wasn't any other choice then), each connected to its own amp, like old-school rock, jazz or classical music, without any mixing console and main amplifier and sound system, to have the sound coming fresh and unadultared (and without any phase and pan location problem) from the machines, like in a real orchestra. and we used almost the same set-up: mini-moog D, MS20, SH2... (!!!!) plus a whole range of old Korg (700s, 770, 800dv, 1000, 2000, ms10, microPreset...)

    Moog is pronounced with a long o sound. It is named after Dr. Bob Moog. I am 100% sure, I meet him here in NC where the Moog company is from.

    Next they should try out 'Beauty In The Beast' by Wendy Carlos, amazing album. A live version of 'Poem for Bali' would be interesting.

      Look up the Bermuda Triangle & The Planets, both by Isao Tomita. Both albums available in full on TH-cam. Also check out the album they referenced in the video, Wendy Carlos's Switched on Bach.

    I guess Buchla would not like this very much. "Brandenburg Concerto" played with Moogs and MS20? Not my kind of stuff. I think a real trumpet and french horn (or samples) sound so much better. Synths should not be used to repeat old music that sounds better on original instruments. Just take the TB-303 for example: It sounds good the moment you do acid on them. jm2c

    • @pcuimac
      @pcuimac 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think Tomitas "pictures at an exhibition" and other LPs are very different to Bach switched on Synths.

    • @TheNeedlefactory
      @TheNeedlefactory 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The TB 303 was originally made to replicate a bass guitar , all be it very badly. it was only its miss-use that made it the legend it is. Tomita , yes. he is the master of classical synth music. If you want to hear original symphonic classical or neo-classical check out Vangelis' Mask album. It is a master work. Synths, like any instrument are simply creative tools. its the ideas that matter.

    • @Psychlist1972
      @Psychlist1972 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree. The synth versions are captivating. I always loved Tomita, and agree it is very different from this, but I still enjoy both.

      I like it a lot, but to me it lacks a crispness and clarity for Bach which clouds the structure which is the essence of his music.

      i think it has to be done right. sometimes the electronic sound can be very gorgeous and put a whole new spin on the song. but for the most part i think it kind of ruins it.

    Loving how Gregory will pronounce Bach properly, but says MOO-g instead of MOH-g... I suppose Bob isn't around anymore to correct people... I even heard Gregory pronounce Björk (as in work) right, but fails on the name of his own ensemble... Oh well... Great stuff nonetheless.
