For everyone who thinks Marvin is bi it's normal for gay people to force themselves to love girls especially back then it's called suppressing your sexuality.
I think the lyric about cutting her lip on the sofa doesn't have any deep symbolic meaning at all because immediately afterwards he says "that's it for girls." It's as if he's looking for any excuse to break up with her, and the slightest turn off of cutting her lip sends him over the edge. "The sofa was blue before" she bleeds on the couch and it grosses him out reminding him how much he doesn't like girls.

Do you reckon that the ‘Word’ is whizzer? OR alternatively is it Marvin’s own homosexuality? I question jf it’s whizzer because not only is the word not referred to as a girl or she/her pronouns but it is also referred to as a queer little thing
This might be an awful interpretation but I figured it was about him discovering the term ‘homosexuality’ (or something of that nature) and immediately identifying with the label, but at the same time feeling this overwhelming shame and regret because of it. So when he says “that’s it for words” it’s like he’s saying he doesn’t want to acknowledge it? Or maybe he means he’s still afraid to verbalize to his feelings (i.e. come out), even after finding a label that fits him? I may be missing something here but that’s what I came up with
My interpretation! Within the context of this song being about how he’s kind of resigned himself to girls but also being done with them at this point I think he is still with trinna or still presenting straight so TO ME when he says he found a word full of regret it reads as he now knows about his own queerness but doesn’t feel able to do anything about it. He’s full of regret because of his decisions to be with women like sweetheart and trinna.
Here's the thing, William Finn kinda contradict himself: He described Marvin in the in trousers book as bisexual, but he describes Marvin in the musicals as, well, a homosexual. (At least in Falsettos it's more present this theme) So, guys, stop saying that people that have either view of Marvin's character is wrong, because sexuality is a fluid thing. Maybe Marvin could've felt in his younger years that he was Bi, but then felt like he was more on the gay side. Or maybe he was always gay, maybe he's still bisexual. In trousers is a more poetic musical, so take it's word more softly, be open for different interpretations!
I read the in trousers book online somewhere, and I don’t remember him being referred to as bisexual there? I’m not trying to argue I’m just curious which part(s) refer to him as bi.
