I've been thinking about how this song might imply that Marvin is neglected by his parents, and how that would explain why he's so obsessed with having a tight knit family in march of the falsettos... the thought makes me sad.
After listening to this musical for the first time in a while, I'm thinking about how a lot of the time it implies that Marvin is suicidal, but it still has such an upbeat tune, which is juxtaposed to the actual lyrics, maybe showing that he's depressed but he has to hide it or it's not as bad, but then in Falsettos, he gets more tired. His relationship with Whizzer isn't healthy, and he still has this emotional connection to Trina, and he knows Jason doesn't like him. In Trousers is full of a lot of Marvin pretending- acting as Columbus in a play, pretending to be attracted to his teacher, pretending to be in a happy marriage with Trina, and maybe pretending to be happy- thus why the songs seem happier and more energetic, and then in Falsettos, Marvin begins to stop pretending. He divorces Trina, he's with Whizzer. He's stopped putting on a charade as this happy straight guy. But now that he's out of his marriage with Trina, he realizes that he still isn't happy, and that's why he seems so much more depressed and angry in Falsettos, while in this musical, he's more like "Life is lonely, life is rotten, and thankfully short" in an upbeat, high energy song.
