Travel is throughly part of education....after going through the history of Edo people and how the British came forcefully to take the Edo Oba to calabar, and put Nigeria in the hands of three tribes ( hausa, Yoruba and igbo ) as tough as the Edo people, i begin to wonder how did it happened? However, the Benin Kingdom wasn’t too far away and the Benin king made several attempts to occupy Awori land and overthrow the Yoruba leadership. As far as the island of Lagos is concerned the Benin/Edos were the invaders. The then Oba of Benin colonized the Aworis to take control of the Atlantic for trade purposes; the Benins were already selling slaves at this time. If you look well, many parts of Benin resemble Yoruba culture and traditions, that’s because some Edos moved to the Yoruba side.

Benin rule Eko for almost 300 years before the Portuguese discovered Eko in 1472, the Portuguese name the city Lagos. The Portuguese also arrived Lagos before the arrival of the Awori who came to Lagos from Ile-Ife in 1550-1555. The first Oba of Lagos the Asipa was installed as a King by the Oba of Benin. Therefore the Portuguese were more Lagosians than the Awori people. Go back to history. Asipa was the son of Oba of Benin and the first King of Lagos.
