- Spring is in the air and the flowers are bursting forth, so it is lovely to capture their beauty before they wilt and fade. Using simple petal and leaf shapes we are going to layer watercolour over masking fluid to create a beautiful floral tondo (that's a circle painting to you and me). Three layers of masking and three layers of watercolour build up surprisingly complex shapes and depth, but the brush strokes are really simple and easy to do. And I think this would be a fantastic way of getting to know all about using masking fluid, as well as enjoying a riot of colour.
If you have never used masking fluid, please take a look here: • How to use masking flu...
I hit upon this as a subject, as I was lucky to be given a box of Artistro watercolours to try out. I've done a full product review here: • Review of Artistro Wat...
However they really don't suit my wet in wet way of working, so I thought how can I play to their strengths and I think this layered painting is it. I so enjoyed painting it, and I hope you enjoy watching. I think doing something similar in shade of the same colour could be really cool too. This is on a half sheet of watercolour paper, but using a full sheet would have great impact.
I used acrylic paint pens to add tiny bits of detail at the end. But you could use acrylic paint or other ink, if you don't have those.
