  • After receiving many questions and request regarding health insurance in Thailand and how it works, I decided to repost three of my favorite videos from my Foreigner Channel combined into one short video. This video is about my first experience receiving health care in Thailand. How does my Federal BCBS health insurance work? What is the cost and how is the medical care in Thailand? Would I recommend receiving health care in Thailand? Thank you for watching. Please like, share and subscribe. Follow us on Instagram at snow.gift and email us at joegreenwtf@gmail.com. For those of you with a military background, WTF stands for "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" and for those of you without a military background, WTF stands for "Where's The Food".

Hope you have a speedy recovery.
In Denmark it is already paid, so no matter what happens to you, you do not have to pay anything out of pocket. And you do not have to fight the insurance company.

Joe, back in 1994, i herniated L4/L5 discs in my back. The MRI scans were usually around $2500 a pop, and the ballpark I got from the Neuro surgeon (spine being the issue) was for around $200,000+ with 2 days in a hospital. Co pay was something like $50-100k, because the insurance company was arguing that it was an experimental procedure. I never did get the surgery, just did yoga daily for a year. I haven’t had surgery in Thailand, but my wife and I get all our dental work done in Thailand and the quality and care we get in Bangkok is the best we’ve had anywhere in the world. I can’t recommend Thailand for healthcare too highly.
And it’s so lovely hearing about Gift and you from the early days.

when I lived in phuket a few years ago I got my left pinky caught in the car door and almost severed the last third of my finger, severe pain, this was 10pm at night. My thai wife took me to the local hospital . The doctor basically said they did not have the skills to fix, so they arranged an Ambulance and we went to the Bangkok hospital in phuket town. It was like a 4-5 star hotel. A doctor seen me pretty much straight away and arranged something for the pain. It was now after 11pm , one of the nurses said a specialist doctor had been called and was on his way. When he arrived gave me an examination and said the nurse would explain the cost, he was in bed when he got the call. The nurse explained 88,000b for surgery and 5000b for overnight stay. I gave her my insurance details, she did all the contacting I actually spoke to my insurance company in Australia when at the hospital to explain what happened and someone would contact them. After surgery I was placed in a very large room and there was a day bed where my wife could sleep. At lunchtime next day I was released. My experience was fantastic and could not fault the thai hospital staff for the care and attention.

From one retired Federal Employee to another , "It is good to know That FEPBLUE takes such good care of us when we are in another country. Most people don't realize the outstanding level of healthcare that exists in Thailand.

Yes Fedblue is very good and better than my state's Blue Cross. There are many different Blue Cross' in the US. Some hospitals in Thailand is preferred network with Blue Cross so you have to check. I still have to pay upfront and try to get reimbursed later which can be expensive.

Yes, agreed, the level of health service is excellent however I always feel for my American friends, healthcare costs big time regardless of whether in the US or in another country. I guess I don't realize how lucky I am, excellent comprehensive healthcare is provided free to all citizens in my country. Medical costs are something we never have to worry about from cradle to grave.

Hello Joe and Gift, I did miss this original post, but when you mentioned the operation when you were doing your weight loss competition, (WINNER) I thought hmmm I must have missed that, so now I am much the wiser. When I eventually get to Thailand I will get the best insurance I can to cover me. I intend to get some medical procedures done when I am there, before sorting business and buying accommodation. I do have one question and that is "HOW WAS THE FOOD" ??? Stay safe from this new wave of the Convid19 in Thailand, and keep well my friends. give Cookie another pat from me. I will send you more videos from here, Winter is almost here but no snow on the mountains yet. 10 / 10

Hi Joe, Good to know you are well and you received such top notch care. It's interesting to note that Thai Medical care is comparable to the US in many Speciality care areas . It's also been known for quite some time for its Medical Tourism. Many of their Drs have Interned in the US and trained in Western Medical facilities. But as with any Hospital it's also good that you had help finding a suitable Hospital and with your BC/BS it all went according to a well laid out plan on your part and the attending Physicians. Maybe it's time to take it easy on the heavier workout weights and exercise regimen. Much like you exercise played a major role in my life as I spent most of my adult life in Uniform where it was expected if not mandatory. Now I walk a lot but I still miss the Gym workouts that I had been doing for 30 plus years. Stay well and keep safe. Looking forward to more adventures with you and Gift.

Hey Joe, you got me I thought you had hurt yourself again. Lol
Then it dawned on me that this is the old one. My surgery was similar but instead of just damaging the rotator cuff I detached 3 of the 4 tendons. I had my surgery done at Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok and Blue Cross Blue shield has them under contract so if you ever need something quick you can always go to Bangkok Hospital in your area. I know they have one in Hua Hin but I think you have one closer than that.

I have to agree (I think I did on the other channel so I'll repeat for the repackage). :-) I also have Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal coverage, and I've been very happy with how it works in Thailand. Outpatient I have to pay first and get reimbursed, inpatient has been direct billed to BC/BS. I had a bad get off on my motorcycle and got to spend a few weeks in a Thai private hospital (Bangkok Hospital Udon). The care really is outstanding over here. I still go to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya for follow-up cardiology appointments since the cardiologist I started with is there, and I didn't want to change. My angioplasty was an emergency procedure and I am doing my best to avoid another surprise like that so now I get routine yearly cardiac checkups.

were you covered by blue cross shield before angioplasty surgery or was this prior to thailand? if under bc for angioplasty did they pay most expenses?not sure spefic plan your on. did they up your premiums since and now pre existing. im looking at insurances for myself, pacific cross, allianz, cigna ect and now.didnt know blue cross was offered

Crap Joe... hope things get back to normal soon. I know what it's like to lose the strength in an arm. But you'll be ok. Not too much weights, the arm will get blue. Just take it easy. They have a plant in the east called...hmm al-low I think. That plus turmeric with warm milk. Works... for me it was another lifetime but it really helps. Take care my friend.

Thai gov requirement for health insurance apply to O-A visa applicants, O visa holders re-entering Thailand, others. Catch was: Thai embassies asking for health insurance by a Thai company and no Thai health insurance for those over 70 (approx) years old. Any change to this catch? Which Thai consulate in USA will accept BCBS instead of a Thai policy?

I have been to 2 hospitals in thailand. One was bumrumgrad in bkk which is the top place. that place was like space age and more advanced than our places in America. The other was a regular private hospital and it was a little darker and dingier but everyone was super nice and very professional. Thai doctors I would trust more than American doctors if they are top docs. at least at the same level. but you have a much higher risk of getting huge bills from american hospitals.
