  • The Ilford Recorder is the most recognised publication for the town's local news. Originally separate from The Ilford Post, it eventually came under the same owner and Media House on the High Road was their home. In 2003 the original Media House was being demolished to make way for a new state-of-the-art premises for publisher Archant's London titles. But that didn't last long at all.

I worked in both buildings. I was even on the project team during the rebuild. The operation moved to temporary accommodation in Clark’s Road, next to the swimming baths. The original recorder house had such character, the new one was beautiful but soulless. I’m not surprised they knocked it down. There’s a time capsule buried there, but probably dug up now. Not that anyone needs a time capsule from 2006

Great to hear from someone who worked in both buildings. I did wonder how it felt to go from that 60s building to the very futuristic one and it's not really surprising to hear it was soulless. Intriguing that there was a time capsule there! You're probably right that it has likely been dug up as part of the new ownership's demolition of the short-lived replacement, and hopefully not just crushed to pieces by a digger, but offered back to The Recorder group. Perhaps that's unlikely though!

Great insight again, thanks! The Cauliflower pub a few doors down is a site thats been neglected for a while. Shame a use cannot be found for old buildings with great design and features.

You're welcome and right about The Cauliflower. A magnificent building which is crying out to be saved and thriving again - but this is the sad state of many pubs unfortunately. At least there is a Grade II lisitng on it which will (hopefully) see it enjoyed again in the future.

I once won a £50 voucher from participating in a competition in the Ilford Recorder way back in July 1997

Not a bad return from a local paper! You must have been pretty good at whatever the competition was, as in those days readership was fairly high and I daresay there would have been a lot of entries.
