Do you remember those specialist local shops which pulled in regular customers from far and wide? The sorts which over time 'sold everything', or at least everything you needed and if they didn't have it, they could get it for you? David S H Leung's camera shop in Goodmayes was one such place. He first opened in Green Lane in the 70s before moving to this corner plot - a former greengrocers - and traded for 40 years. Did you ever buy anything from him? Animal Ark vets is gaining a similar reputation in their field having been in business in Goodmayes for over 20 years.

David Leungs photographic shop stocked almost everthing I needed,working as a professional photographer during the 70s 80s 90s.
The shop was often busy with many customers, but David and his knowlegable staff were always helpful and knew who you were and had a friendly greeting.

It's so nice to hear those stories of being dealt with on a personal level. Also nice that he dealt with professinals like yourself as well as he did the person who required a point and shoot! We miss those sorts of local shops - certainly specialist ones like camera shops, so thank you for adding your memories of how it was so that the memories live on.

I bought much Canon and Vivitar equipment from David in the 70s. He was a lovely guy and ran an excellent, friendly shop, and was ably assisted by the equally friendly Alan and Maureen.

Wow a blast from the past. I remember that place from early 80s. Goodmayes was where I lived 83 to 85 with such lovely memories and of course Goodmayes Primary School. That Goodmayes Ave once lead on to High Rd towards Seven Kings

Good memories from early in your life. The camera shop really did become part of the furniture. You're right about the road leading round to the High Road; you can still walk round the corner but it's blocked off to through traffic. They're also building a large complex of flats on the former Homebase site which is rising up beyond Goodmaye Avenue as you look west.

@@IlfordRetro yes that's right. I remember Homebase being there and a bus depot. Also there was a pub called the Kings.

@@rajnirvan3336 The Kings was the Seven Kings Hotel for many, many years.

@@rajnirvan3336 Immediately to the East of Seven Kings bus station was the Mann Egerton car dealership, selling BMC/British Leyland cars and then latterly, Peugeot Cars. It closed down at the end of 1980. Previously FG Smith Motors, it had also had a commercial vehicle sales showroom a bit further East near the Barley Lane traffic lights.
