To each their own paddle. Once I switched to double-blade for solo trips I never looked back. Fast. Efficient. Straight. Well-controlled. Any of us taking chairs, stoves and pounds of tech into the woods have no right criticizing gear choices of fellow paddlers. It's tough not to judge, I know. I try to save my negative energy for the people who have yard sales on portages and talk too damn loud/much on the water.
Just catching this now. Glad I viewed it as I have been a fan of both Kevin and Jim, Kevin for a few more years obviously. Used you books for Kilarney and other adventures that got me out there. This is an interesting persepective 3 years out as Jim is really starting to gain traction with his varous productions, His canoeing vids are off the charts good now, just watching his solo on the Yukon.......pure gold!

I don't watch the "survival/reality" type shows because they seem overdramatized, consequently I had no idea who this tall guy was at Canoecopia. Now I see he is, as Kevin says, the real deal. I'm subscribed to his channel and see him in a new light. Thanks for another great fireside chat. Oh, and I sometimes use a kayak paddle in my canoe. Not afraid to say it.

I have been using a double-blade for YEARS! When you are alone and fighting wind... it is the ONLY way to go. But it is not a purchased double-blade. It is two regular canoe paddles clamped together near their grips with about a foot or so of the neck of each one lying parallel to each other. If you get my meaning. Use U-clamps, hose clamps, ducktape, whatever you want. With two 5 foot paddles you can pretty much make any length from say 9 feet and shorter. Whatever you are comfortable with. I also carry another single paddle with me for when I want to move along slowly and fish. But to GET anywhere, especially on a large lake, the double-blade is essential.

Very cool, I love how Jim comes across as a 'dufus' but after watching him in action, that is a guy I would go into the bush with and would follow in an emergency. That last part is critical. Good job on the interview Kevin!
