God damn Otis that was the best friggin one ever!!!!! The thing about the Eagles reminds me of the Big Lebowski. "I hate the Eagles man.. get out of my cab".
35 year first responder here. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen folks put these situations off or talk themselves out of treatment. Glad he’s here to tell the story!!!
Otis: I have genuinely enjoyed the interviews with Gurf Morlix. How can one guy be so damned entertaining a story teller and so friggin’ cool yet display an aura of mellowness and remain appealingly humble and soft spoken. I’d been unfamiliar with Gurf prior to earlier entries on your show yet discovered that I own quite a few albums he’s associated with. Thanks for introducing us to such a genuinely nice guy.
Thanks for the cautionary tale. At age 60 and not exactly living the charmed life. Chest pain, or anything upper body gets my attention. It's always good to learn of others experience. Gurf is for sure a very cool guy.
Love this channel. Thanks, Otis. Good for Gurf. Glad he's ok. I had one 5 years ago. Hit me at about 4:30am. I thought it was neck/shoulder pain (which i have sometimes). Thankfully, my wife was an ER nurse at the time and once i had woken her up with my thrashing about, she insisted that I go to the ER. I had what is called a STEMI, which is a potential killer. Thank God for modern medicine and the very talented people who know how to implement it!
I am reminded of Warren Zevon's last appearance on the Letterman show, where he talked about his cancer diagnosis: "I may have made a tactical error by not seeing my physician for 25 years." My dad had the same near phobia and general dislike for hospitals, doctors, etc, and one day it was all over. This is a great reminder of the importance in not being as stubborn as my dad or folks like that. Thanks so much, gentlemen. I look forward to many more years of you both being around.
At 58, I get annual physicals. I’ve cleaned up my bad youthful habits considerably. But now it’s Ice cream that I’m having to give up and that sucks. Just like the song “Everything I love is killing me” Thanks Otis and Gurf.
Great story! I saw an interview were Tom Petty said that’s he had been approached by dozens of people, if not more, telling him what an inspiration “I Won’t Back Down” had been in their lives. My sister fought cancer for 5+ years after being told that she had maybe one year to live. The song inspired her as well. Love your channel Otis. Thanks!
Brought tears to my eyes and moved my soul with wit and charm and the wisdom of life lessons. Life is precious and we cannot back down from the trials and tribulations endure it and love. Rock on!!!
Congratulations on surviving the heart attack. And thank you for reminding us that we need to take care of ourselves. I hope you didn’t have to spend too long in the hospital.
WOW!! That musta been scary as hell. They say that chewing the aspirin is best even though it's nasty cause it gets into the bloodstream quickly. A good buddy who is 90 just had two stints put in yesterday and is doing great. Glad you make it through the ordeal. Keep on keepin on.
Gurt, you've told a great story, I was on the edge of my seat, even knowing you didn't die! I'm glad the ending is favorable!! Gosh, driving yourself, the traffic jam, those awful pains, THEN the person at the Hospital when you finally get there treating you like scum -- glad they got the stent in there and you didn't have to hear Don Henley again! TORTURE!! So thankful for Tom Petty. He was watching you from the Great Wide Open and soothing you with his song. I'm SO glad you're here, continue to be as well as you look! :)
Damn! You scared us all!! Glad Gurf's OK too!! Grazy story! You never know what's going to happen and we can't always rely on help!! Gotta try to take care of yourself and that's getting hard to do sometimes. I'm dealing with health issues myself and it's getting harder all the time to see doctors and stuff. You have to get check ups when you can!! Take care everyone!!
What a great storyteller, I've been a fan of Gurf for quite a while. Love the closing line There's a song I could die to, and live with... Glad he's still with us!
@@Caperhere Yes, He described exactly what happened to me. It was like a Charlie Horse across my chest. This was in front of people. I was being filmed while it was happening. It went away and the next day guy in my band calls and said what did the Doctor say? I told him I didn't go, He lost it, made me go and they zipped me into surgery fast, Rotorootered my arteries put in a stint and I was good to go. I reversed the heart disease in a couple years and Im good to go
Love ya GURF, you knew all the drunken angles of a life time , to know them in a personal way must have been unreal and sad at the same time to be so close to genius and dark sadness . Thank you for sharing the stories you have with them. I had a widow maker and stints put in me at 55 , great story about the songs while getting the stint . WONT BACK DOWN , brother.
i enjoy his music never having come across his name before your video of him discussing blaze foley. i certainly was hearing him on lucinda williams records and lived within an hour of where he found some not very delicious aspirin.
I learned my lesson the hard way back in early 2020 by the time I went to the hospital I was 3/4 dead and wouldn't have made it to see the next day. I have regular doctor visits now and my health is much improved and have become a firm believer staying on top of things with yearly physical etc.
I am sorry Gurf went through this but please take solace in that you really gave me perspective and made me laugh on a day I really needed it! Thank you!
Gurf, I am glad you are OK. A close friend of mine, a bass player/vocalist for a 3-piece rock band did a complete gig with a burst appendix and collapsed immediately after. The show must go on, I guess.
Man that procedure sounds brutal…especially while awake and having to listen to The Eagles at the same time 😢. Glad you pulled through. Pro tip, as someone who takes several Rx meds I keep in a pillbox in my pocket, I always keep a couple aspirin in there as well. Just for pains etc…but if somebody said to me “I think I’m having a heart attack” I would give anybody my aspirin…and maybe some Rx painkillers too(remember to never share rx meds UNLESS it’s a life or death matter), and be sure to inform the medics. So don’t be afraid to ask a stranger for aspirin, or anything, in a medical crisis. I dunno your music but I’ll sure check it out. Just keep on rocking, and keep that beat steady man! Thanks for sharing your story, ya never know who watches, and info like this may well save lives.
As a 2 time cancer patient… do not hesitate to get to a doctor!!! And if a doctor tells you something that doesn’t make sense … find another one !!! And Tom Petty did not get to a doctor and he’s gone for it 😢
Thank you Gurf. February 2021, while skiing with my daughter and her fiancé. Stopped for a beer chest pain, stood in line for beers, felt the pain a week prior, took aspirin. Was able to ski sort of to the clinic. Helicopter flight to Denver, 100% blocked LAD. Song that was on was Mellencamp, “hurts so good “ thought nooo. God is good , all bonus days and got to see my grandsons. Peace .
What a great story. I really enjoy Gurf. I've gone through something similar and it is certainly something you don't forget. I had mine at work and a coworker just happened to have aspirin on hand; in case a coworker had a heart attack! I love how he added the music critic angle to the story. Maybe it meant something. "Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?" may relate to the sense of driving yourself to the hospital. I'm not judging because I probably would have tried the same thing. Oh man, what a great story. Nail biter, captivating. Really glad it all worked out!!!! "I won;t back down." My mom died the same day Tom Petty died. In the local newspaper there was a half page obit for Tom and little quarter column for my Mom.
This was a great story. I've learned to keep a copy of Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever CD in the car. And get to a hospital immediately if I ever have chest pain. Thanks Otis and Grif.

Great show, as a guitar player who had a similar incident (2005, 3 stents,be 20 years if I make it, in 2005, thank you god) I just want to say that as moments can make a life or death difference, one of your main problems is denial-- this is not your stomach or gas or whatever, this is real, it's happening-- maybe your wrong and embarrassed, but that's the best outcome possible, if not it could be your life!
It’s weird how the brain works sometimes. Here Gurf is having a heart attack but is worried about not having money for the valet at the ER. I’m glad he didn’t try to still go to his gig.

I love this video you make me want to quit smoking I am so thankful that you’re alive girth and I don’t even know you thank you for sharing this crazy story
Good story. Glad it had a happy ending. Five years ago I thought I was having a heart attack and my ex-wife, (we actually get along better than when we were married), rushed me to the ER and when I walked in and said, "I think I might be having a heart attack", I was in a wheel chair in about 15 seconds and hooked up to an EEG within about 2 minutes. They move fast when they hear those words. If you ever go to the ER and want to get to the head of the line just tell them you might be having a heart attack.
The best part of this story is Tom helping Gurf get through a near death experience. It reminds me of being on laughing gas at the dentist and all of a sudden the fusion jazz guitar blistering solo somehow sounded impressive. Normally I would ignore it and all of sudden I’m thinking this music on laughing gas isn’t bad, but only on laughing gas.
My first heart attack symptom was death - or would have been if not for the full time emergency responder lifting weights right next to me at the time. I didn't know him but he told me later he had given CPR to a 1000 people over the last 10 years in his service to the Sun City retirement community across the bay. Dude broke my ribs big time but I survived it. Gurf is a lucky guy...
I had 2 stents put in in February, they asked me what music I wanted and I told them blues. so i got to listen to SRV and BB King. good luck with your treatement
Take care of yourself, folks and get yourself checked out regularly. It's probably a good idea to keep some aspirin nearby.
💜👍

Yes sir!
I do…
I’ve never met nor heard of this guy, but I love him. What a champion. “I don’t want to die listening to the Eagles”, hahaha!
He does a cover of Fred Eaglesmith’s “49 Tons” on a Eaglesmith tribute album. Excellent version!

Glad you are ok Gurf! Tom Petty is a poet.

Hey Otis, what's the big idea making us all think YOU had a heart attack?! Yikes. Glad Gurf is OK.
Seriously! Careful with those titles Otis.
I was about to have my own heart attack.
Please, please don’t scare us again. We love you.
Oh man, you freaked me out. I thought you did. Glad you didn’t but sorry he did.,
Language with its context make a meaning, The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man by Marshal McLuhan.😉
Important episode! Having had my aortic valve changed twice & half a dozen other heart procedures in the last 10 years, i can relate. Glad Gurf is ok.

I'm glad you survived that experience .
It's rare that people share those things.
Thank you.
"That's a song I can die to......and live with".....lol Gurf sure has a way with words! So thankful he's still with us.
For a bad story, that's a really good story... with a parallel soundtrack. Glad Gurf is still here to tell it.
WOW!! That musta been scary as hell. They say that chewing the aspirin is best even though it's nasty cause it gets into the bloodstream quickly. A good buddy who is 90 just had two stints put in yesterday and is doing great. Glad you make it through the ordeal. Keep on keepin on.
Man....What a lucky fellow Gurf is. Thankful for the medical team. This was intense Otis.

Friggin' GREAT Story, Gurf! And the way y'all ended the video was BRILLIANT!!!!
Crazy story....I hope your fine now.
What a great storyteller, I've been a fan of Gurf for quite a while. Love the closing line There's a song I could die to, and live with... Glad he's still with us!
What a great story! WOW!!
I had the same thing happen to me at a Photo shoot. Glad we both made it

Glad you're here brother. I had a similar experience, heart attack driving jumped the median and went head on accident with a police car.
Wow. Great storyteller. Glad you're ok. Don't back down...
Awesome video Otis! Gurf, your alive!!! Thanks to both!
Wow great story captivating right to the end. Glad it worked out.
Glad you made a full recovery brother, now ya get to play another gig.sending great vibes from NJ
My goodness, glad Gurfs ok. Saw him a few times over here in Glasgow. Great guy. And amazing musician.
GREAT! Thx 4 sharing this story with us,
Man!! What an ending!!!
Otis,…
One of your best!
Thanks for sharing
I'm not even sure what to say.... Thank you Gurf for telling this story and you Otis for bringing it to us.

The line about Don Henley had me cracking up!
I never been so full dread reading a video title. Glad everyones OK.
I am sorry Gurf went through this but please take solace in that you really gave me perspective and made me laugh on a day I really needed it! Thank you!
Wow!! Had a scare!!
Glad your ok Otis.
Glad Gurf was ok! I know that scared him to death.
I hope you publish a big book of these interviews someday; they are golden.
Great story GRF.....and thanks for the heads up relating to heart attack pain. Stay well!
What a story! That was superb. I'm glad Gurf is OK.
Gurf, I am glad you are OK. A close friend of mine, a bass player/vocalist for a 3-piece rock band did a complete gig with a burst appendix and collapsed immediately after. The show must go on, I guess.
A burst appendix?! They cause intense pain. He could have died.
Otis, Your videos are always entertaining, often humorous and in this case informative and enlightening. Thanks Gurf for sharing - thankful he's o.k.
I'm loving the Gurf series. Some stories I've heard, some I have not. Some remain to be told . . .
I'm glad that you're still with us, Gurf!
Now that's a great story from a great man! Glad he made it through!

Man, that was a Horrible experience. Glad he got through it. I think I'd be in shock for a couple months after that.
Great story. Thanks.
These interviews are so fantastic, thank you for sharing.

aDang, Otis, you got people worried. Also, “A song that I can die to an live with” has got to be the name of Gurf’s next album.
Probably your best video, in terms of passing along important information. Kudos to you all for putting this out there.
Oh man, what a great story. Nail biter, captivating. Really glad it all worked out!!!! "I won;t back down." My mom died the same day Tom Petty died. In the local newspaper there was a half page obit for Tom and little quarter column for my Mom.

Holy shit. What a story. And the pay off and your edit in the last seconds was like a mic drop. Gurf is a legend.
Damn, Otis.
Don't scare us like that!!
Glad everyone is all right.
This was a great story. I've learned to keep a copy of Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever CD in the car. And get to a hospital immediately if I ever have chest pain. Thanks Otis and Grif.
I had a stent a year ago, feeling pretty great. This brings back the memory. I can’t recall any music, that would have been a bad way to go..
What a story! Thanks for telling this one. I am so glad that Gurf is still here. ❤
great story hope you're Well!! bot of you!
I'm not joking, Otis. I went straight to the cupboard for the aspirin. I felt like I was in the story with GM as he told the tale. Very vivid. I'm glad you pulled through.
That's a song I can die to and live with.
That's perfection!
I just did have a heart attack six days ago and I had the exact shoulder to shoulder pain except it also went across my back and I had cold sweats. I had the same stint operation but he went up through my right wrist.
I've heard/read multiple times that surgeons like a music with a smooth melody playing. Supposedly, the song played more than any other in the operating room is Van Morrison - Into the Mystic.
Been listening to Gurf all morning. This is one guy I would love to see a guitar masterclass video from. His right hand is brilliant!
Great story!
Holy Christ, the Don Henley line had me actually laughing out loud. And then, Tom Petty to the rescue. Great stuff.
Great show, as a guitar player who had a similar incident (2005, 3 stents,be 20 years if I make it, in 2005, thank you god) I just want to say that as moments can make a life or death difference, one of your main problems is denial-- this is not your stomach or gas or whatever, this is real, it's happening-- maybe your wrong and embarrassed, but that's the best outcome possible, if not it could be your life!
best story of all time....with a happy ending too!!!!!!!
It’s weird how the brain works sometimes. Here Gurf is having a heart attack but is worried about not having money for the valet at the ER. I’m glad he didn’t try to still go to his gig.
That was Fantastic!!
You were very lucky that day.
Anyone over 50 needs to think about this kinda thing. Emergency kits etc. this could save your life.
I’m retired from hospital pharmacy. I’ve seen it all.
Don’t take chances, talk to a doctor about being prepared for that moment.
Very informative.. thank you!
I felt that same damn pain when they were placing my stent, but they hit me with some nitro and it immediately resolved, replaced by the worst headache I’d ever had. Fair trade, I believe.
I love this video you make me want to quit smoking I am so thankful that you’re alive girth and I don’t even know you thank you for sharing this crazy story
Good story. Glad it had a happy ending. I think I saw Gurf at the Conroe Americana Festival not too long after he recovered. Good show.
I had 2 stents put in in February, they asked me what music I wanted and I told them blues. so i got to listen to SRV and BB King. good luck with your treatement
