  • This is my experience with gum surgery to fix receding gums. If you’ve been putting it off, this might help you make a decision.
    I had this done in Florida. I looked into pinhole surgery beforehand but it was thousands of dollars more expensive.

      @@CyndiEdwards I saw you mentioned in another comment you were in Tampa Bay area. What doctor performed the surgery and what insurance would you recommend that covers this type of procedure. Did teh same person do all your surgeries? How frequent were follow up visits to ensure the surgical site was healing correctly?
      I was considering graft or Pinhole method , but I am starting t think the Pinhole may have more room for error and failure than a traditional graft. I am just unsure about the reattachement of the gum tissue from the pinhole.

    Thanks for this Cyndi, it really helped calm my nerves. I got my gum surgery yesterday on upper and lower left and definitely the worst part is in the chair. 3 1/2 hours in the chair and trying to picture all the gory details was no fun. Freezing was the worst part. I went through over $600 of nitrous oxide but today I find there is no pain at all. Don't even need ibuprofen or anything. Definitely feel like the stitches are going to be annoying but as long as the results are good I would say I'll be okay with doing the other half when the times comes.

      That was the part that freaked me out the most. I did not want to do it for that reason. I put it off for years. The first day when I went home was the worst. Hi, I just had my first surgery 3 days ago. I didnt feel any kind of pain on the roof of my mouth during or after the surgery. I could feel pressure on the surgical site as they put the gums there but I couldnt feel anything when they cut into the roof of my mouth. I'd rate the gum pain a 6.5 out of 10, it is irritating but not unbearable. They didnt give me any steroids, just a pain med and an antibiotic, along with a medicated mouthwash. The worst part of the whole thing is not getting to eat. I cant eat solid food for 2 weeks. I have to wear a retainer for 2 weeks as well.

I’ve had braces, wisdom teeth removed, and a few fillings so i’m pretty good with dental pain, I just HATE the numbing shots, and with the recession my teeth are super sensitive to cold so i’m most nervous about the numbing/freezing process. I sent photos to a lot of people I didn't mean to send them to. Then I got home, took my meds, and slept for hours.

      I'm on day 5 after surgery and things haven't been too bad. Some people say it feels worse than a burn on the roof of your mouth, but I haven't felt anything besides a bit of an annoyance with the bandage. Maybe it's the pain meds. They gave me etodolac for pain, amoxicillin for antibiotics, tramadol for bigger pain (which I only used twice), and a medication for swelling. I'm only on the amoxicillin now. I only used the etodolac once yesterday and I have only felt a slight tug from the stitches between my teeth.
      I've been drinking herbal teas including green tea, with echinacea and fresh lemongrass to see if it helps me with healing.
      The bandage on the roof of my mouth snapped in two pieces yesterday and it hurt my mouth a bit, but the pain went away. It looks like what's underneath the rip is healed.
      I still have the gum "putty" over the graft, so I can't see that. I've been eating mushy foods ever since the surgery. Tuna was a bit too rough, so I don't suggest that. Basically, soup, Mac n cheese, mashed potato with eggs, applesauce, ice cream, egg salad, etc. That's what I suggest.
      I'll update again next week when I go to my next visit.

    • @PunkiMunki
      @PunkiMunki ปีที่แล้ว

      Day 17 after surgery: a few days ago they removed the bottom barrier I called "Gum Putty" and it has healed up very nicely. I thought it would look like Frankenstein's monster in my mouth, but it was healing very well. Everyday the graft is less bumpy. It didn't cover any recessed teeth much, so I'm hoping for it to creep up to cover the recessions, like some do. But if it doesn't, eventually I can go back to get that fixed. This was done to give me more gums where my gums were thin. After that heals, I'll have enough gums to use for coverage of the recessed gums.
      After the bandage on the roof of my mouth came off more, it became a harder to eat again and the feeling that everyone mentions that feels worse than a burn was true at the moment. Now, that's almost healed completely. The bandage came off completely close to the two week mark.
      After the removal of the barrier, I was told I can brush my teeth gently and floss carefully.
      I think this is my last update. That should be enough info for anyone wanting to know the ins and outs of this procedure.

    • @CyndiEdwards
      @CyndiEdwards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They used my tissue for the bottom teeth because they said it was better for the bottom. When I go back in November we’ll use donor tissue for the top. As long as you’re well frozen, the tissue removal isn’t painful. It was an odd sensation though as it healed. It bled a bit the first day but not at all after that. The top of my mouth had dissolvable stitches, the gums did not. Your dentist may tell you they can use donor tissue for your whole procedure. Either way, if a dentist says you need it, they probably mean it. I put it off for several years but finally decided to just do it.

      @@nayhaanwar6080 my dentist froze my mouth really well before doing the gum graft. It hurt a bit when the freezing wore off but it was bearable. I put it off for years but now I’m really glad I did it.

      I think I took one or two pain pills. It really wasn’t that bad. It’s worth it. You’ll be OK.

    How painful is this process? And is it okay if you wait for 2 3 years before you get it done?

    • @CyndiEdwards
      @CyndiEdwards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not painful if you get well frozen beforehand. It was a little uncomfortable when the freezing wore off afterwards but not too bad. I put it off for about 5 years before I had it done. How long you wait depends on how quickly your gums are receding. Your dentist will give you a better idea of the situation. Good luck.

      @@voltz3734 I image it varies from dentist to dentist. My first procedure with insurance was less than $300 my next procedure will be closer to a thousand. More gums and worse insurance. My second procedure was postponed until January due to a storm.

      @@CyndiEdwards Hey thanks for posting the video! I'm thinking about doing this, was wondering what issues/complications there can be? I was hearing sometimes the grafts can fail - does that mean they have to remove again? Basically trying to understand the risks with this surgery. And does your mouth feel normal and do you have feeling on the gums. Thanks in advanced :)

    Hello how r u . my gum surgery is scheduled next week can u plz tell me how painful it is and how much time take to recovery bcz I have two kids one is 18 months old so m very tensed

    • @CyndiEdwards
      @CyndiEdwards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they’re using skin from the top of your mouth it takes longer to heal. You’ll be ok. The first few days are the toughest but I was able to sleep and drink smoothies. The pain wasn’t too bad. I didn’t need to take all the pain meds they gave me. Once a few days pass, the most annoying thing are the stitches. Just remember the pain during recovery is temporary and can be managed.

      I think we all know what receding gums look like, especially if you have them. I did this to help people overcome their fear of the procedure. I put it off for years for that reason.
