Great review! There was another bass musician who called bs on this video because he claimed the harmonic was an "impossible note" because the sound didnt match her hand placement on the fret board, and he also questioned the accuracy of the tapping. His review was way back before Fami joined Lovebites and she was just a young amateur YT sensation, so maybe it was jealousy of her growing popularity. I've been playing guitar as an amateur on and off for 35 years. I'm not going to claim to know much about advanced bass techniques but his review never sat right with me because to me she was obviously skilled and not a fraud. Thanks for this clear explanation and review. I wish I could remember that dude's page so I could send this to him with a recommendation he take your lessons. You certainly know your stuff and I'd recommend you in a heartbeat to anyone wanting to learn bass. Great job!
His name is Davie504 and yes definitely sour grapes on his part (coz he couldnt bloody play it!) Used to enjoy watching Davie504s channel but after that got no time for the dude! No room for jealousy in my book!.
The issue that Davie504 pointed out was her fingers and the sounds didn't line up. On this point, Davie was indisputably correct, BUT the reason was NOT because Fami couldn't play this song (because she has played it live - videos are on TH-cam), but because the audio and video were recorded separately. In other words, Fami wanted to entertain her viewers by moving around while she played, but she couldn't realistically play such an incredibly complex piece while jumping around. Her video NOW clearly states that the audio and video were recorded separately. Having said all that, I do think there was some element of jealousy of Fami's ability.
Davie already had over a million subs so i'm not sure what he would be jealous about. you guys are just making up bullshit. he was correct about his analysis, and she said that the audio was not from the youtube video of her performing. however, she did do it live without all the performance.
@@Erowid13 Davie questioned the authenticity of Fami's technique with artificial harmonics; to the point of calling it the "impossible note" (I'm pretty sure that wasn't meant as a complement). The note obviously isn't "impossible" because Low End just replicated it. That same technique is also routinely used by another phenomenal bassist Miyu of Asterism. So what exactly was Davie "correct with his analysis" on? Low didn't need to see Fami do it live to believe it was possible, so apparently he's just more knowledgeable about the potential of the bass than Davie. Just because Davie has millions of subs doesn't mean he's the master of all things bass. Jake Paul has millions of subs too, but I wouldn't take his crypto advice. 🙄
@@BulletProofSoul1029 what? you guys are the ones saying he was jealous because of her popularity. why would he be jealous of that when he had over 1m subs at that point already. and again, his point being that her fingers weren't matching what the audio was producing, which he was right about, as she admitted it was pre-recorded BUT she did recreate the cover live which he praised her for. so again, you guys are just making all of this stuff up for what reason?
She's extremely talented. I'm not generally such a fan of "hear my crazy skills" videos because I care more about the overall beauty of the music. But in Fami's case, videos like this must have helped her land her gig with Lovebites, so it has certainly resulted in some great music. Something I find interesting: this funk bassist is now in a band with an R&B singer and a classical pianist, and they play heavy metal. The division between mainstream and niche genres seems to be less pronounced in Japan, maybe a bit like it was in the west half a century ago.
Perhaps one of the top 10 bassists on the planet. She took Les Claypool to town and sent him home weeping.... What gets me every time I listen to japanese bands is that they are insanely good instrumentalists. Thanks for the great reaction.
Fami was about 17 years old in the video (a high schooler) with about 5 years of learning bass. She hid her face because she was in high school at the time. The name Fami comes from "FamilyMart," a major convenient store chain in Japan. She loves FamilyMart. Yeah, she is funny. Her channel has more subscribers than Lovebites.
Very cool breakdown thanks for showcasing Fami.. Check out Aldious with their bass player Sawa. In the song IN THIS WORLD (Live) from "Live Unlimited Diffusion" she plays a mean bass solo with Toki one of the lead guitarists.. They are one of the pioneers of the all female Hard rock and metal bands from Japan.; Best wishes from France..
Fami is a perfect fit for Lovebites a Once in a lifetime band... I do think when playing Alien Alien that she recorded first then made the video part... That's how I would have done it so energetically.
Awesome video! Loved your analysis of her playing. I highly recommend you check her out playing a live show with the band this time! This song features her pretty nicely: Lovebites - The Hammer of Wrath live, Knockin at Heaven's Gate
You nailed what makes these Japanese bands excellent at what they do ... the cultural attention to detail and not doing anything half-way. When you add to these the prominent place music and the arts have in their education, you get the seemingly endless flood of musicianship excellence, especially this new wave of all-female rock and metal bands, unlike anything that's ever emerged from the West.
I've been into Japanese indie music since around 2001 and bands have always had women in them and lots of all female bands. Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her is one of my favorites.
First off, I love Fami, she's an absolutely amazing bassist and her energy is infectious! Perfect addition to Lovebites after Miho unfortunately left. Davie504 did a short reaction to the tapping section in the beginning and pointed out that there were a number of slaps that couldn't have been produced with how she was playing, she took a LOT of criticism for that as people thought she was faking it all for attention. She ended up coming out and explaining that the video and sound were from 2 separate takes (much like any music video), she then proceeded to play this song unedited which showed that while nervous and making some mistakes, she was indeed a capable bassist.

FAMI was 17 years old at the time, and the songs were created using Vocaloid, a type of music composition software that was popular among young people, and the difficulty level of the covers was generally high. At the time, FAMI did not show his face, but his outstanding performance made him famous through the TH-cam content. A short time later, he found an audition for a bass player due to the departure of a member of LOVEBITES, and with his outstanding talent, he passed with flying colors, found the music he wanted to play, and has been playing it ever since.

They are probably meaning that the sound we hear is not recorded during this take, which is certainly possible. That doesn't mean she can't play it, I am sure she can with how talented she is, but a lot of youtubers record their song and then make a "performance video" afterwards. I can't say for sure if she did this or not, but you would expect the sound to change a bit with the jumping around. That said, if people mean that she is not capable of playing this, than I disagree with their take. But on the other hand there are a lot of fake musicians out there on specifically tktk (can't put the full name on here), so they also hurt the really talented ones as well.
Fami freely admits that she recorded the sound and the video separately for her videos. But that is her playing the sound that you are hearing as you watch her video. She also has a video of her playing this cover live on stage, removing any doubt that she can't actually play it.

Don’t ever let that feeling get to you - redirect it into inspiration and motivation. You will never be the best bass player there is, and you will never be the worst there is. Both you and me will always be in the middle. I love that, because I don’t have to try to be either. Just have fun playing and let music bring you joy and happiness. Big FYI. Her name FAMI is not her birth name as it is not even a Japanese word or part of etc. When she was an adolecent girl she would often just disappear and no one knew where to find her, until a friend told her mom she could be found at the WORLD FAMILY FOOD MART which was her favourite place to hangout, as the place fascinated her because of all the cool products they sold from around the world. So her friends took the first 4 letters of FAMI-ly and started calling her FAMI or the girl at Family Food Mart, as this is where she would usually be found. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Always here for LOVEBITES.
That band is a joy to listen to I only found then 6 months ago unbelievable musicianship incredible to watch
I just laughed when she smacked that natural harmonic. That was awesome.
Fami, she's a bass Goddess, imho.❤
Thanx fo review, dude.🤘
No problem!
Fami is phenomenal. I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEW LOVEBITES MATERIAL INVOLVING FAMI! 🤘
Such an amazing performance and song
She's extremely talented. I'm not generally such a fan of "hear my crazy skills" videos because I care more about the overall beauty of the music. But in Fami's case, videos like this must have helped her land her gig with Lovebites, so it has certainly resulted in some great music.
Something I find interesting: this funk bassist is now in a band with an R&B singer and a classical pianist, and they play heavy metal. The division between mainstream and niche genres seems to be less pronounced in Japan, maybe a bit like it was in the west half a century ago.
So glad she is in Lovebites now!!
ふぁみさんの演奏にリアクションしていただき、ありがとうございます。
Thank you for your reaction to Fami's performance.
I wonder if Davie504 helped her get that ridiculously high sub count? ( True what you said about the FamilyMart konbini! )
@@TheCyberMantis Of course!
Davie used to tease her by saying that Fami was making notes that she shouldn't physically be able to play!
You make me wanna pick my bass up again!
I hope Fami will record another personal album!
Her first one, when she was still a teen, was very promising.
She rejuvenated Love Bites after their break. She fits in with the other 4 maestros❤
This song features her pretty nicely:
Lovebites - The Hammer of Wrath live, Knockin at Heaven's Gate
Seconded! Excellent song and she's featured nicely in it!
Agree!
@@whatdothlife4660 Yeah, indeed. There are lots of great older female bands from Japan that are worth a listen such as OOIOO and eX-Girl.
Spot on.
This is entirely new for me. Mind blown.
Did you see their YT live earlier this year when she stepped up on the podium and just ripped the stage apart😂?
First off, I love Fami, she's an absolutely amazing bassist and her energy is infectious! Perfect addition to Lovebites after Miho unfortunately left.
Davie504 did a short reaction to the tapping section in the beginning and pointed out that there were a number of slaps that couldn't have been produced with how she was playing, she took a LOT of criticism for that as people thought she was faking it all for attention.
She ended up coming out and explaining that the video and sound were from 2 separate takes (much like any music video), she then proceeded to play this song unedited which showed that while nervous and making some mistakes, she was indeed a capable bassist.

last Friday I was so near,, I could grab her Freedom Bass if I want to . Gig in London
Yep, the Japanese have a great eye for detail, like "he" and "she"....

First thing that came to mind watching this was Mike Butler of Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. Only difference is Mike was more violent with his bass whilst playing incredible things.

The whole guitar world is being turned on its head by a new breed of shredders.
All the rules have been thrown out the window.
Manufacturers are having to produce new types of guitars.
It’s as though, Chatman Stix have been mixed with guitars an all the trick an technics are thrown into one bag.
I’m 56 an it’s so increadible to see the whole music scene moving on.❤❤❤
THE best bass player on the planet.........PERIOD!!!
Precision and attention to detail. Yes. Many Japanese have told me that Americans are “about.” That is, the opposite of detailed and precise.
There has never been a better time to visit Japan. Go see for yourself. It changed my life.
Next: Tokyo Groove jyoshi What Is Hip? - The bassist Juna Serita does some nice stuff. Check the version with the samisen not the electric guitar. There is an amazing bass solo followed by an equally impressive drum solo
They do a pretty interesting take on "What is Hip" and I enjoy it but it's nowhere near the groove of Rocco Prestia and Tower of Power.
I'm a fan of The Jazz Avengers. Juna is always great, and Senri is virtuoso on the Yamaha kit!
Thanks for a great analysis. There are trolls out there who claim she is faking it. I guess her debut with Lovebites silenced them!
@@1970Phoenix
That's basically what I expected. Nothing wrong with that imo, bands are doing that for music videos for the longest time as well. I wasn't aware of her live version of this, I am sure it's really good as well.
🤘🏽LOVEBITES RULES🤘🏽
FAMI also can play guitar solos, piano, and a bit slow on drum(all video in her channel), she do arranged the bass line herself in LOVEBITES songs...watch them live songs The Hammer Of Wrath, Stand And Deliver(MV)
BEST Japanese female bassist MIHO/FAMI(LOVEBITES), MISA(BAND-MAID), HARAGUCHI(NEMOPHILA), CHOOPER KOGA(GACHARIC SPIN), JUNA SERITA(TOKYO GROOVE) BEST female Jazz bassist....

I sent my friend this video and he randomly reminded me who you are and then I remembered that I have your guide to right hand technique. 😅

Wow I love Her❤❤❤❤😊she is smoking crazy on that bass😊😮😊
Hello, she is great! Miho the former bassist is great as well. Could you check her playing?
Another great from Japan is Kiyoshi. She also has a few "How to play..." of some of her songs also. Her band is herself and a drummer.
Fami is amazing ❤❤❤❤
You've got to try her solo album. The bass lines are off the charts.
I've always said about Japanese music that no one should be surprized that the country that can take rice and raw fish, sand and a rock, and create Shuhi and rock gardens, can take Western music and turn it into something totally new, unexpected and amazing.
I KNOW LOVEBITES IS AMAZING ....BUT THIS IS AWESOME ON BASS..
I know its an obvious choice but I'd love to see some Flea analysis. There's some decent live material out there as well.

Watching this kind of talent makes me feel like a complete failure on bass. I know five months is not long to play.. but the appreciation of this is not available in words. Holy crap.
Focus on your strengths and forever be a student at the craft. There’s no destination as a musician - just the journey of connecting with art itself. Cheers!
@@LowEndUniversity More respect for you than ever, Mark! Couldn't have said that better myself. Truth be told, any musician worth his/her salt these days knows that no matter how good you are - or think you are - there is a 12yo Asian girl who can play rings around you. :0) That doesn't affect my play or enjoyment of playing, but it does give me some great and fun experiences watching the very rare True 'prodigies' (like Fami) in this world blow my musical mind. BTW - In honor of her high school graduation, Fami wrote and produced a CD where she played bass, guitar, piano, and sang songs she had written.

Best bass player in the world joins best band on the planet!! ........Go Wolfpack!! The one and only LOVEBITES!!
I have no idea what her real name is but FAMI just seems to fit her so well and created that unusual and unique English based word moniker and I think she may be the only girl on earth ever to be called FAMI! Go FAMI!!!
Isn't her nickname even Fami。? So it's clear, that it's just an abbreviation... Actually, it's easier to leave out the 。!
Davie 504 analyzed it she is not playing at this time he says she is using playback there are sounds made when hands aren't doing anything! Not to say she isn't playing it, just not dancing and playing it live in the video!
The fourth line of the summary section states "*Video and audio are shot separately".
FAMI's competence is unquestionable, though.
