This. Everyone collectively forgot that the older styled Firbolgs still exist and I fucking hate the cowbolg designs Critical Role forced onto their fans cause it collectively made people forget an already existing group of large cow people exist called Minotaurs.
@PsionicCavalier I dont see how they forced it on their fans. 5e Firbolgs looked like that already and they just had one guy play as one. Don't get me wrong, I love me some red headed giant firbolgs, but the weird red nose and cow ears came before Caduceus (though his nose was a bit more animalistic).
You know, considering there's already tall, relatively human-looking races in DnD, I'm glad they made them cow-like instead. There's nothing I love more than visual variety in fantasy design!
@@Elkantar_Rostorgh231 I think that could be solved by making the new and old style firbolgs two different subraces. Also no one forgets minotaurs are you insane? Minotaurs are like any other "monster" race in the sense that they are more commonly enemies than players, firbolgs are the chill side of cows and minotaurs are the ferocity that a cow is capable of displaying. I have seen first hand how scary a cow can be, but also how sweet they can be. On one hand they are relatively calm when handled regularly and on the other hand they can fling a man 10 feet in the air like its nothing.
Funny story about the time I played a firbolg I had joined a group for a stint before I started DMing. I wanted to play the Fey Wanderer Subclass since it had always kind of peaked my interest. I joined the group late so They wrote me in as they woke up in a tavern. I was sat in a dark shaded corner by myself head down. The eye rolls at the table as they thought I was just going to be another EdGy RoGuE. The party approached and the disillusionment was immediately broken as I was mid conversation with a doormouse over what constitutes a fair split of cheese. (Firbolgs can speak to animals, they just can't understand direct response.) Tl;DR Party thought they were getting yet another angsty rogue, in reality they got friendly Moo Moo Cow man who likes animals
I'm one million percent upset they didn't include firbolgs and Goliaths into Baldur's Gate 3, they're pretty much the only races I play in D&D for exactly the reasons you've described. Was extremely surprised to see githyanki, hoping to possibly see some new race additions in the future but I doubt it. Here's hoping for Baldur's Gate 4 to release and also include firbolgs
I have a player who’s going to town on enemy NPC’s with a Firbolg. His class is that of the Warden from Valda’s Spire of Secrets. One time, we needed him to open the sewers for us, so he lifted up the manhole cover and threw it like a frisbee. Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, a manhole cover breaks through the roof of the tavern everyone met at, shattering the kneecaps of the barkeep.
Am slightly sad that instead of making Firbolg into Playable Characters, they instead remade them into Fairy Folk. Probably mostly because D&D doesn't like you being a Large Sized Character. I miss the old Firbolg that were 10 feet tall, and were genuine Small Giants. Nothing against 4/5e Firbolgs at all. I do like them. I just remember them being, NOT this, and a little BIGGER!
