- It was denounced in its day for being unrealistic, but WarGames was far more prescient than anyone wanted to believe.
If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I love this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and its place in sci-fi cinema history.
In other words, please stop commenting on how my videos aren't what you consider "reviews."

One of my favourite films and a great retrospective. I learnt quite a few new things about the production process. This is a movie that if it comes on TV I say I'll just watch a few minutes but have to watch the whole thing. It has charm, it has interesting characters, it has thrills, it has great pacing and it has 8 inch floppy disks.
Seriously though, 12 year old me found this thrilling when it came out. I was a nerd who had just got to touch his first computer in school (and then got told off for trying to take it apart). Suddenly there was this film that showed why these things were so important and what the possibilities there were, whilst everyone else saw it as a reason to mess about for an hour and type rude words. I do love the innocence of Broderick's character. That was many of us at the time, just the endless possibilities of this new medium. It reminds me the first time I used the internet in '90.
This definitely influenced me into believing this was something you could make a career out of.
I especially like the infomation on the beginning and the ending Putin pick is a good touch. I enjoyed watching the movie when it came out. There was a lot of talk about it. The Smithsonian did make a flying model of a flying dinosaur, similar to the one depicted in the movie. They tried to show it off during an airshow at Andrews AFB, MD. It flew for a few seconds then crashed.
Thank you, thank you thank you for posting this video. My feelings towards this movie are the same ones you expressed here, having been labeled as a geek and a nerd; preferring to tinker with my old TRS-80 color computer instead of going out with my brother’s friends; washing cars and mowing lawns in order to save money to buy my first PC (8088), etc. To this day, this movie still speaks to me and I still remember it fondly.

By God, I love Barry Corbin in this movie. In my mind, he adlibbed all of his great lines. Don't ruin it for me...
Supposedly, "pencil" was the first computer password to ever appear in a movie when David found it in the
high school office to change his grades.
BTW, if you ask people for the launch code from this film, don't expect a lot of hits.
I'm like 0 for 10,000 or something.

I'm starting to think these people don't know anything about movies...
I can confirm that Corbin ad-libbed most of his best lines. The “piss on a spark plug” line forced the production to a stand still because everybody got stuck in a laughter loop.

After many viewings, one thing that I noticed in the movie is the character named Pat Healy played by Juanin Clay. She is the assistant to Dabney Coleman's McKittrick. This minor character does a lot in the movie. At the beginning during the meeting about the test, she writes something on a pad and shows it to McKittrick and he then suggests using the WOPR to get the men out of the loop. She is the one that escorts Falken, David and Jennifer into NORAD (she was in the crashed jeep and I think I remember her saying "Hold the damn door" when the main door was closing. Later, she gives the estimate on how long it will take for Joshua to get all of the launch codes. The writers got a lot out of character.
Of course for the story, she is the sidekick for McKittrick to talk to and give us plot points. She also allows the McKittrick character to stay where he should be and bring in the heroes for Colman to react to when his character sees them.
“My friend down the street…”. Ah, memories. We killed that poor VHS tape! I still love this movie. As always, great inside info that I never knew!

I have Falken tyres on my car and every time I am checking tyre pressure a computer voice in my head says "greetings professor Falken". One of my favourite movies obviously 😂

Yeah. Ally Sheedy was in both WarGames and Short Circuit, both of which had the same director.
Wow, I honestly had not heard about the John Lennon connection, I guess I missed that piece of trivia somehow. That would have been very cool.
One of badhams best movies, showing my age but remember real event that triggered this. And without been overly blunt it scared the piss out of me.
Broderick and sheedy make a likeable believable couple.
The late John wood as Falcon steals the show as that "he's like 40...really old" and woods stinging rebuke to dabney Coleman "I see your wife still picks your ties..."
It's such a time capsule of real justified nuclear war paranoia around at the time (funny how cyclic the world military power-games never stop)
Barry Corbin is another scene stealer in a admittedly clichéd role which he manages to make believable.
My biggest complaint is the finale (in part) the rubbing Broderick's hair and ignoring the little sod had nearly started ww3.
This is one of those 80’s classics I’ll still watch. It’s got a good feel to it. Nice pace.
What's even more hilarious about the Air Force balking at the film is that NORAD had, indeed, seen false alarms that put SAC on high alert not long before the film came out.
Having not seen this I would love maybe a fuller picture of the story before lengthy casting and production insight.
I must have watched this movie ten thousand times throughout the 80s, and I probably haven't seen it once since then. It's definitely a big part of the reason I ended up in software. I should dig it out and have my kids watch it on our next 80s movie night...
I had a funny thought while I was watching northern exposure and there was Barry Corbin. Maybe his caricature changed his name and moved to Alaska after the events in war games.
A great underrated movie that was pre Ferris so I definitely want to re visit it thanks to your video!
This is a very entertaining movie good story, well acted & directed as well as @ times...a frightening movie, the thought WW3 could possibility happen due to a E-malfunction. It's bad enough that human being alone can cause this...all by ourselves! There was also an event in 1979 when US defense satellites wrongly detected a Soviet Union first strike. Like the great band "Devo' once sung..."It's a beautiful world we live in, a strange & romantic place...!".

Actually, after that learning experience it probably would have been safe to leave WOPR in place, unless someone did a Hard restart of him and he was back to day one in terms of experience.

My brother had this on tape. I watched it a few times, and feel this was the film, along with Bueller that made me dislike Broderick.
Good film though.

I thought that the story was also commentary on the real horrors militaries go through without any consequences. Watch another Martin Sheen movie Nightbreaker. A fictionalized story of true events. The army marched sildiers to ground zero directly after a nuclear bomb test knowing the damage to the soldiers.
