Yonkers Up & Down

  • Geographically, the city of Yonkers is something of a gigantic, sprawling ziggurat of terraces rising from the Hudson River. This is a compilation of photos of the city stairs of Yonkers. Most of these stairs, in varying states of repair, connect streets or segments of streets where the terrain is too steep for normal roads and sidewalks.
Most of the photos -- most but not all of which are mine -- were taken from 2007-2015. They have previously been posted at the SoYo Sunset message board.

Excellent pics of the city stairs. I climbed the Van Cortlandt & Beech St. stairs hundreds of times growing up on Nodine Hill.

Was born in Yonkers in 59. St John's. We were living at 470 No. Broadway. Moved to Morsemere after my brother was born. Have vague memories of walking everywhere. End of the Line & Untemeyers but can't name the stairs.

That was great. People walked and took buses. I remember the Riverview Place stairs. Still looks good.

    Nice Pics. Thanks
I lived on St. James Terrace..near snake hill and the 72s in the 50s
Winfred Terrace was at the bottom of steep himalayalike hill where we used to sled down. It was lined with houses and heavily salted so its residents could climb out with their cars. There would be a strip of snow/ice right in the center. The only way you could make it was, 2/3 of the way down you had to get on to the pavement and turn sideways and skid with sparks flying and come to a stop before you hit the wall.

Thank you! So there's a Snake Hill in SE Yonkers?! That's also a nickname for steep rise on VCPA by Pelton Field in SW Yonkers. And I'm pretty sure I've read of yet a third Snake Hill elsewhere in Yonkers.

A grand ending might be the broad stairs at Untermyer Park down to the view of the Hudson.

I used to love driving around the town with my dad pointing out all the places he use to hang in his big Chrysler.
