Clearly Joe Biden was not responsible for Youngstown. The question is: Is this the way he wants things to remain? Downtrodden and reliant on the government? Poor and uninspired? Complacent and stagnant? Because it kinda seems that's what he does want based on the history of his actions. I would hope our president wouldn't want communities to fail so he can try and remain in power.
He can try to adjust the taxation system, spend more money on infrastructure, industrial transformation and skills training, instead of letting poors get poorer
I grew up during the Reagan era in Ohio. At that time the GOP, Fiscal conservatives, social conservatives and evangelicals believed the follow. "The middle-class was too well educated and made too much money." I watched as they outsourced jobs, right sized companies, eliminated pensions, began freezing wages in manufacturing, reduced health benefits and voted down damn near every school levy. This is the end result of these shortsighted greed policies. And the Democrats did nothing to stop it. So as the saying goes "you get what you give." I wish them and others luck. It will take something we don't have in America to fix this problem. Unity.
@@jasonzhang8110 All of what you've mentioned would work. But, I 'm afraid we as a nation have said one too many nasty things to one another. The wounds are too deep and the anger too great. People are more than willing to allow the enemy(aka their fellow Americans) to suffer and die as payback for their perceived sufferings. We will have to wait this period in history out. Sad as that is.
Respect for visiting and highlighting Youngstown, but Just some constructive criticism. I've lived In Youngstown my entire life and it would have been nice had you interviewed a real resident, not some guy who grew up 30 miles away and has no idea what Its really like to live, work, and try to raise a family in Youngstown Ohio. Anyway it was interesting seeing an outsiders perspective. 🙂
I agree. I like his channel for the most part, but he really needs to start interviewing people who live in the heart of the communities that he is profiling.
Actually youngstown didn't look as bad a Nick Portrayed it to be. It looked like it needed some good landscaping and I totally liked the way some of the houses didn't have Neighbors living across the street. If I liked the East Coast I would buy a house there. They didn't look that Hopeless from what I recall. God Bless you and your New House. Let Nick tell it. He must live at the Taj Mahal or at least an upgraded one.
Hello, Ohio native here. Trust me, the problems that are happening in Youngstown are happening all over the state. They started looonngg before the current administration, and the one before that, and the one before that. Point is, this has been a long term problems that has many interconnected parts. Mainly the fact that people still believe that the factories and jobs will come back. They wont. And if they do, trust me they wont pay what people are thinking they will. There needs to be a long term shift in political, social and economic factors to see anything change here!
Great point well taken and also. If they had made those companies place a substantial amount of monies in an account to keep the people going longterm. That would've helped the communities. However Our People just worship the RICH Corporates who think they own the world and then THEY Pack up and leave town when they get good and ready.... DEVASTATING A WHOLE COMMUNITY. YET NOBODY BLAMES THEM. After people worked so hard to make them RICH...
I'm a 2022 graduate of Youngstown State University, but I am not from the area. Living in Youngstown for four years was a formative experience, and for me was the closest to "big city" living I ever have been. There is a lot of culture in Youngstown and pride and I think I am a better person for going to college there versus a more sheltered university like Kent.
Youngstown is a white flight city. It’s not some sad run down forgotten post apocalyptic town like you’re showing and some of the places you showed never actually had houses. Like many industrial cities in America once the mills shut down the population just went where the jobs were. The city of Youngstown itself is now a college town so most of its money is spent on the area on or around Youngstown State which looks amazing compared to when I went there only 20 years ago. Everyone else in that area moved to the suburbs which are mostly ranked very high on quality of life measuring lists. So no, politics has nothing to do with Youngstown’s current state, it is well taken care of by politicians on both sides of the isle which is why In spite of everything you showed and said half the stuff in their downtown is brand new and had you driven a few blocks west the view would have been A LOT different. The places you saw look like that because those are the last hold outs in those areas refusing to give up their property for gentrification projects. A lot of older people like the guy that’s talked about in this video are buying up land because it’s cheap just so the city can’t build in that area and will protest any plans to improve the city with the excuse that if the population grows that will bring in crime. If people with money can’t build they can’t move in and if they can’t move in that affects the cities income stats.
hit the nail right on the head. You can tell they did poor research for this video. I mean, the guy isn't even FROM Youngstown they interviewed. Youngstown has been improving significantly, especially in-comparison to nearby cities like Warren
The good paying jobs went overseas because American corporations could have their products made for lower costs. Corporations are more concerned with profits than patriotism.
thank you. seriously. perhaps our humble narrator here doesn't understand the level of pride us Valley dwellers have and how this area really isn't as bad as it's made out to be.
Those roads absolutely had houses on them, the sidewalks are still under the grass, on the border of Hubbard there are many streets that they leveled and it's the best it's looked since the sixties. How about oak Street at the end of 422 they leveled a whole neighborhood to build that cool can plant and years later it's never opened and is going back to nature, but ya whatever you say.
Let's not forget about corporate welfare. 55 of the largest corporations in America paid no federal corporate income taxes in their most recent fiscal year despite enjoying substantial pretax profits in the United States.
@@mikegrant5721 yea the same old talking point. Mitt Romney paid 11% in taxes the year he was running for president. You are not taking into consideration their effective tax rate.
For Pete's sake. I grew up there. We had pools and ballpark and bowling alley and skating rinks. Southside. The schools were awesome. Very college oriented. The empty houses now are crack houses! The people who run the city are imbeciles. There have been shootings here this year than ever . People are afraid to speak up. I loved growing up there. Such a shame😪
I'm from Tennessee and there are homes here like this one that have been in the same condition for decades!! Nothing to do with any President in our lifetime!!
I am 74 and grew up in Y-Town. My neighborhood had Poles, Irish, Germans, Italians, Slovaks, Jews, Ukrainians, and a few Puerto Ricans for good measure. I saw tattoos on forearms, talked to concentration camp survivors, men that served in the German Army, Men that had served the US Army, and even one fellow that had served in the Polish Cavalry in 1939. What an education for a young boy. Food, WOW, international food show every day in the neighborhood. Roman Catholics, Byzantine Catholics, Russian Orthodox, Jews, Lutherans, Ukrainian Orthodox, some how we all got along!
I live in Youngstown and love my community. In our community, it is tight knit and folks have pride in the ownership of their homes. Lawns are neatly manicured and many of those that live in this community are not on drugs or live a life of crime. There is no denying that element is present, but crime generally is not a random event, with the majority of the crimes perpetrated by a known offender. I see a lot of promise in the community. Downtown has changed within the last 10 years, transforming blight to vibrancy. There are trendy businesses piping up near YSU and of course, along with the blight and 20,000 homes, there are homes throughout various parts of Youngstown that is worth well over 100G. Families are constantly present in Mill Creek Park and events held at the Coveli center, and that community unity , I believe is gaining momentum. I would say that if folks take an active role in their own community, changes will happen. It is not as bad as the video makes it seem. It will take a while, but I believe that it has the potential to make a complete turnaround.
It was called Black Monday, not Black Tuesday. I remember Youngstown in the 60s and 70s. The place was booming. Its sad what happened to this once great city. What I wouldn't give to see those smoke stacks from the mills up and running again and emitting their billowing smoke over the skyline. There was a sense of all will be ok when those mills were running because they created ample jobs as a result of having the still mills in operation. Been over 40 years since Black Monday and we can't even come close to making good enough improvements in order to sustain a stable job market and it doesn't look like any real improvements to this once booming town will be occurring any time soon.
No one "allows" companies to eliminate jobs. My company installed one piece of technology and laid off 70 employees in one afternoon. The company never went anywhere, just the jobs did. Even my job in finance requires two people on computers when it used to require ten with pen and paper not so long ago. Automation will kill more jobs than outsourcing ever will. Wait until self driving vehicles kill the transport jobs.
Self driving cars are not going to be a big thing in our lifetimes. Nobody wants to deal with the liability when that thing crashes or messes up.(which has already been shown to happen). Not to mention they don't work properly in inclimate weather or road work conditions which is like 24/7.
@@michaelwhite2823 A lot of jobs were low IQ. A classic example is people standing by a conveyor belt taking items off it and putting the items in a box. Its a job with zero challenge, zero advancement, zero job satisfaction, and on and on. Its no wonder robotics took over those types of functions. The people whining about "the jobs left" are the same ones who would be whining about working a conveyor belt packing boxes hour after hour for their entire life. Since such jobs don't require skills or thinking the pay will match their value.
Not a huge fan of the political skew, but I understand the relevance. I’m glad more and more people are seeing that neither party has your interests in mind.
@Jersey Drifting South Yougstown votes Democrat year after year. Columbus and Wash DC, know this. So Dems don't send money (or very little, just enough to keep people voting but not enough to make a difference) because we Youngstown'ers vote Democrat. The GOP doesn't send any money cause we don't vote GOP. It's just the way it is. A rule by one party, played a part in Youngstown's demise but not entirely to be sure. In the end, Ytown got taken for granted and this is played out in cities across the country to varying degrees. And you're right about BOTH parties. They care about themselves not us!
@@danielstamp3301 I agree with some of what u stated but if you look all over the US. The worst places are run by Democrats. Im not political. Just stating a fact
They all take money from the big PACs and follow their orders. Regardless of how you feel about him Bernie was the only guy offering something different
People are convinced that the low skilled manufacturing jobs are coming back. Some factories are reopening, but due to automation there's fewer jobs. Whatever jobs there are in these factories require a lot of skill.
Its really not that BAD. I live 30 minutes away from Youngstown on the PA border. I go to school at YSU almost everyday and feel safe. They've done a lot to fix up the city in the last 20 years. You showed no footage of the good parts like the campus or downtown. There are definitely some bad parts, like in all cities, but its a lot better than most people think. There's a lot of hidden gems that people don't even realize exist in Youngstown. For example their business incubator ranked number 1 in the world a few years ago. The world renowned business incubator alone brings in tons of new jobs and businesses to the area. I agree the city could be better, and again there's some bad areas. But a quick drive through doesn't tell the whole story. Give Youngstown the respect it deserves.
As someone from Youngstown I really gotta hand it to them. They have come a long way in the last 20 years. Far from perfect, but if they keep it up it will be great again.
He's a right wing TH-camr wannabe. Don't take it too personally. He tries to sound like he knows what he's talking about at the beginning of the video, and then slams his political interests in to try and fish you into believing the same BS that he believes to try and get you to subscribe to his channel. The best thing you can do is just not watch his videos. He makes money for his political views every time somebody searches "Youngstown" and clicks on his video. It's disgusting
I did service all over Ohio in almost every city during the 80's. Youngstown didn't scare me much. Cleveland, East Cleveland, Dayton...those were much more risky.
I’m a Youngstown Lifer! Grew up in the South Side went to Wilson High, probably threw the guy he is talking to I. The video out of POGOS. Currently live in Campbell aka Soup City, LOVE IT HERE! I make a really good living and I enjoy the seasons. Like you see others say you can find bad if you want to anywhere you go!
I lived in the area my whole life. I live in boardman for anyone from ytown. Most outsiders always focus on the bad and never anything positive. Yes ytown is in rough shape and before things get better the residents need to take back their communities because I believe the majority of the people are good people trying to get by and a small percentage cause the trouble. I like living here I hate hot weather and prefer not live on the coast below sea level or on a fautline. I just wish people would show positive things as well!
True…I live in the area too and there is a lot of good. Mill Creek park is right by the one area he went through and it’s beautiful there. There’s bad in any area but there’s a lot of really nice people here too. And btw…in reference to the sign by the church, I do believe the prayers will help! 😌
The Mayan cities were abandoned over a 200 year period, not overnight as some people think. US cities like Youngstown are falling apart at a much faster rate. The Mayans probably had no idea what the ultimate outcome was as their cities fell apart. We at least have their example to learn from (but we won't).
Interesting analogy, I think Mayans may be affected by an epidemic like Covid 19 in their ages, living in the jungle could make to be exposed to viruses from wild animals and the needed to practice social distancing which eventually let them abandoning their mystical and ceremonial cities living just in small groups all around the area of southwest Mexico, but Is just my theory
It depends on what the people want in America, with democrats in charge this is what you get. Kinda looks like what happened to Detroit and other cities where dems held office.
Take another look guys. I live in Youngstown. It's going strong. Beautiful Millcreek Parks. Bike paths, strong sense of community, new medical facility, downtown is still getting its face-lift. Would love to see something good about Youngstown. The town deserves it
MillCreek Park is about the only place I return to when visiting family. The West Side was the last holdout of the city that was decent but even that is barely still inhabitable for working middle class families. Boardman, Canfield and Poland townships outside Greater Youngstown are the only places I’d consider raising a family. It’s hard to believe how many NEIGHBORHOODS are actually gone since I left in early 1990’s. GM Lordstown leaving nailed the coffin shut, IMHO.
I'm from Youngstown (the yo). Our city has been run down wayyyy before Biden. Our local level Government failed us. Inside Corruption has plagued us tremendously. You can't blame a president for a local government issue. I know we'll bounce back but we have to get rid of the big problem which is corruption at the highest local levels.
Thank you. These repubs always want to Blame President Biden. Well at least some poor people with children have some income coming in and can better their lives and they call that Communism. However the Rich taking the money and leaving that's so wonderful. SMH!
Ok I live in a city called Niles. It’s literally right next to Youngstown. I’m in Youngstown everyday, I attend college at Youngstown state university (ysu). And I know it’s hard to tell the entire history of my area in 14 minutes but I don’t believe you did a good job at all. Yes, Youngstown has been hit hard by the loss manufacturing. However that was 50 years ago and our economy has diversified and moved on. The shots youre showing are the absolute worst parts of Youngstown. It’s disrespectful that you didn’t show any of the downtown areas with hundreds of businesses, quarter million dollar homes in the city, mercy health hospitals which is one of the best hospitals in the area, you made no mention of mcdonald steal with is 5 minutes from where you were driving, the list goes on. yes, parts of Youngstown are extremely run down and poor, but that's just statistics. other part of the city look nothing like that. Youngstown has a lot of business. a lot of the high skill laborers and business men and women commute to work. so because of that the surrounding area is a lot more wealthy. i don't appreciate you using my Hometown as a way to score political points. I’d also like to point out that we’re an hour away from Cleveland and Pittsburg. It’s hard to imagine if you’re not from the area, but look at the area on google earth. This entire area from Pittsburg, through Youngstown, and to Cleveland are connected not only by road but by business, manufacturing, Union labor jobs, and the service sector. The entire area is a big web and everyone in the entire area works and lives within in.
Dude, I'm from there and probably a bit older than you. I knew the end of it's best days in the 80s and I know it now. The place is a shithole. Humility of Mary health industry is a monopoly there and the care sucks compaired to when there was competition with North Side. There are definitely worse places in the world, but I thought it was a pretty based video. Upset about what Dems did with the place, because that's literally all it's ever been is Dem ran
@@cs.birdman Lies, there are way more areas that look like that than there are the YSU campus. The place is a shithole and now even the violent crime is going up since BLM. The end of the vid is Meridan Rd. Meridan Rd is not one of the 5 worst streets.
Trenton r, you are correct!! The maker of this video made the city look like it is nonexistent, but those interested in keeping Youngstown alive have encouraged many small businesses to relocate downtown. The downtown area has grown over the past several years into a great entertainment area! And, it is too bad that he didn't drive through the YSU campus, or Mill Creek Park.or similar areas of such beauty that surround the Youngstown area! The film was a bit deceptive of the entire Youngstown area!
America depends WAY to much on foreign countries. Most of our drugs and medicines come from China, a country which doesnt give a crap about the environment. If anything we should be producing and manufacturing more in America because we have the technology and knowledge to dispose of any harmful byproducts from manufacturing in a proper and responsible way that is less impactful to the environment and the people in the area and also give the workers proper protection from any harmful substances they might have to work with. Now compare that to the manufacturing practices in China (dont forget the slave labor) and the dumping of harmful byproducts directly into the lakes and land without any treatment. I would rather pay extra knowing my money will be going to support a hard working American family, and not the Chinese Communist Party which hates America and the idea of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Thanks for the great videos Nick!
Anything you ever read in American media about China is just projection. The country you're cursing is the country you live in. I don't blame you for it but you are being lied to.
It doesn‘t look too bad in Youngstown. Maybe you should visit Europe. In „Great“ britain, in France, Spain everywhere you find poor post industrial era cities.
My grandfather worked in the steel mills My dad was born and raised in Youngstown. Once the manufacturing jobs left it started going down I don't see it getting better unless decent paying jobs come back
Poignant video. America is truly at a crossroads where we can either choose revitalization or further decline. My dad lived in Youngstown and he seems to have fond memories of it. He gets visibly sad now whenever he talks about it. Say what you want, but America is full of hard working people who deserve better. Our leaders need to do more. That or we need to replace our current ones with those who actually have interest aligned with normal everyday Americans.
I lived in Youngstown for a long time. The situation is terrible there and cities like Youngstown all throughout the Rust Belt have suffered a similar fate. The government and the corporations that built towns like this definitely have sold out the working class people that live there. I really don’t like Joe Biden but I do not think it’s accurate to put this on him and say this is “an emerging kind of communism”. Corporations didn’t leave cities like Youngstown because of taxes, it is almost impossible for a middle-class American workers to compete with workers overseas that work for pennies. Trade deals by the government and corporate greed are what sold these towns out. Every four years politicians make a stop in Youngstown and they talk about how they’re going to bring back manufacturing - both red and blue. Youngstown has been in shambles for decades with both red and blue presidents. At the end of the day these people serve the same masters no matter what political party they are affiliated with, they are all bought and paid for.
Goodness, this area collapsed long before Joe Biden. Industry left. Jobs were sent elsewhere. Youngstown even suffered greatly during the Great Depression. Same story goes for Detroit. Charlie Bo has some sad footage especially of Detroit's East side. This situation is repeated everywhere industry left. The same situation is rampant in England. It isn't a Black people or White people reason. When jobs go, poverty enters, society often collapses. Those who are able to, move elsewhere; those who can't , remain, and things get bleaker and bleaker. To be fair to both Youngstown and Detroit, many efforts are being made, and both cities have areas that are growing and thriving. To say Biden wants communities to fail so he can remain in power is nuts. That would make no sense at all.
Poor Nick fooled by the republicans like Blaming President Biden for the gas. When Gas was high under trump, Before President Obama Left office. Gas was $2.39 a Gallon, trump got in them republican owned companies went straight up and CALIFORINIANS YES CALIFORNIANS VOTED FOR THE GAS TAX. I VOTED FOR IT. However we didn't tell these OIL COMPANIES TO KEEP RAISING PRICES JUST BECAUSE A FREAKIN REFINERY GOES DOWN IN Texas. Blaming Democrats who are trying to help people. trump tried to take people's healthcare. He even tried to take people's TIPS Off the Restaurant Jobs. How Communist is THAT? Thank God for Nancy Pelosi and the OMNIBUS Bill that saved my Husbands TIPS on his JOB, IN FACT HE WORKS 2 JOBS. trump SUCKS.
You really should cover Rochester Ny. At one time it had 3 of the world's largest companies, and were the cities largest employers, Kodak, XEROX, Rochester Products, & Boush & Lomb, now the last o 2 are barely hanging on. Now the 3 biggest employers are UR Medicine, Unity Health Systems, (both hospital companies), and Wegmans grocery. Add to that, that what used to be beautiful neighborhoods, are just hoods that get fixed up only to go back to hoods. As I was taught growing up, you know neighborhoods are bad if the street names are just a number or a letter. (Avenue A-E, 1st-10th street for example) These areas generally have generational welfare, (some of my family) high crime, and unemployment.
So what do you think the common denominator is for all these other Youngstown’s in America?Better education all the way around? Better diet? Two parents?Normalcy?
You are so right I work in these same houses daily and it is that bad and it does have a certain air to it especially after 6pm. I hear gun shots on the regular and witnessed a drive by last summer.
There are factors beyond any government's control. Technology is reducing the need for human capital at an astonishing rate. We've known this was coming and haven't done anything to prepare.
@@Simbecile You are correct! I'm 68, and remember Popular Science and business magazines in the 1970's with articles about the future 32 hour work week, automation, robotics, and the decline in low end labor. Politicians in western economies are too indebted to large industry that have moved finance, profits, and tax obligations around the world following the best ROI. The trick for an individual these days is trying to stay positive if you are a reader of fact.
I left the Youngstown/Warren area about 45 years ago, right before everything imploded. The area was nearly 100% dependent on the domestic steel industry, which at that time was controlled by the USW at the peak of its power within very outmoded facilities. A perfect storm for a crash that would never recover. My parents were in upper management of USS and retired. Sadly, my stepfather lost his health care coverage immediately (I was told the union people kept theirs for a while), and developed cancer, which consumed their entire savings as people paid their health care bills back then. The union stronghold which favored the Democrat party never left the mindset of the area to this day. It's the main reason Mary Barra chose to abandon Lordstown, which is a recent example of the toxic business environment that exists. Now there are generational families that know nothing other than receiving some form of assistance from the government. The sad fact is they are unaware of the hidden inflation tax the government creates by creating fiat currency they can't pay for.
Yeah I am from Hermitage PA I worked at WCI in Warren for 12 years it was a good job but like lordstown, and Packard those are all gone now I have been bouncing around at small manufacturing jobs for years
Glad you're so tuned in to Mary Barra. Did you actually ask her. As a matter of fact, she left Lordstown because GM decided not to continue to make small and mid-sized cars because GM is incompetent at doing that.
I was born and raised in Youngstown, and I have to say some of the most amazing, coolest down to earth people come from the YO. I may not live there now, but I will never forget where I come from. I love my Youngstown people ❤❤
Akron is just as bad too, I rarely talk about this since I saw this channel. My Brother was murdered in 2018 along w/ me, I manage to escaped cause the gun didn't go off on me and ran for help. We were just visiting my cousin from Iowa cause he just came back removing a tumor in his head and came to see my uncle. We were heading home and that's when it happen. They went not too far and killed another guy but the other girl manage to escape to, the gun jammed on her. There was no reason for them to kill anyone, it was just a thrill killing at random. It was the worst shooting in Akron's history during that week.
@@NickJohnson yep that’s Akron for you. It’s why I tended to stay over in Cuyahoga Falls or Stow instead. The biggest issue with big cities is the Democrat leadership. If good citizens were in large influenced to protect themselves with guns and just get rid of the problem, those assholes going around killing for “fun” wouldn’t exist. And people who think twice about messing with one to begin with. Less crime means less need for taxes to justify cops. Less bad people means less money in taxes spent in the court system or jails. And when bad people going to the grave instead of jail, again, people don’t have to pay for them in taxes. The area gets nicer, business booms because more people want to stay in the area. Taxes can get lowered and more people(especially Akron University students) have more money in their pocket where it’s needed most.
I visited a friend in Youngstown a few years ago and being in the Real Estate industry I was shocked by what I saw. You would see a pocket of high end mansions surrounded by ghetto. There's absolutely no middle class.
The Good news is a mansion here can be had for about 200k. The bad news is you'd be surrounded by some of the poorest people in the country. So much meth and heroin use here. I bet there's a lot of property crime. With so much vitriol towards the rich these days I don't for the life of me know why anyone of means would want to live here.
The middle class is slowly been going away for years and it will probably be fully done by the end of bidens run. There will only be the poor and the rich now with the poor screaming and begging for their allowances( stimulus checks).
That's just a part of the Northside, Youngstown is kinda bigger than you think ,still a good video downtown is improving alot, and the roads are bad, I lived in Youngstown, and live 5 minutes away in McDonald village check that out small old-school community
The outlying areas are pleasant and quiet, very low crime. If you mind your own business around here and work hard, you can live a decent life in the Burbs/Exurbs around here☺
Anyone remember when Sam Walton was running Walmart? Just about every display rack had a sign atop the merchandise rack that had an American flag printed with "Made in USA."
The made in USA logo is kind of bullshit lots of companies will have a small part of the manufacturing done here so that they can slap that on at least half of those products were largely assembled by child slaves in Vietnam or china
@@andyrobinson8248 BUT THEY DONT WANT TO PAY TAXES, JUST USE THE ROAD AND BRIDGES AND PEOPLE. GET FILTHY RICH DON'T PAY TAXES AND POOR PEOPLE WILL FEEL SORRY FOR THE RICH. THEY NEED TO PAY THEIR TAXES.

Grew up in the ghetto of Youngstown. I live in Austintown now… Work in warren at a local mill. You’re right Warren is scary. I’d much rather be driving to Youngstown for work haha.
Of course he did. He is blaming Biden for a city that has been a shit hole my entire 53 years of life. This guy is completely biased. I saw two other videos by him and he is obsessed with ghettos. None of them were created by one politician or political party.
I live in Ohio. I always told myself I would never live in Youngstown ( not far from home) I always asked who the hell would live in Youngstown? It is the missing child capital of Ohio. Most children missing in Ohio are from Youngstown. I wouldn't take the chance.
It’s a good video, but it seems a little bit oversimplified in scope. I live in West Virginia, about an hour away from Youngstown. Keep in mind that, to us in West Virginia, Ohio is generally considered a wealthy neighbor state where things are much better and we envy it in many ways, even if we don’t easily admit it - which might give you some perspective on what it’s like in West Virginia. We’re like a Third World country inside of America. But worrying about the fall of our country is almost not worth the anxiety, anger and sadness it brings to our lives. Why? Because It’s already fallen. It’s just - you know, history is long - the Roman Empire didn’t fall in a day or a week. It was a colossus that fell slowly and heavily over hundreds of years. So it is, too, with the USA. We’re already falling. It’s just a long process, a long way to fall. But the momentum is beyond the tipping point without radical changes to our socio-political landscape - and those changes are not coming. We’re a country so divided by tribal factions that we cannot even agree on what is or is not reality, what is or is not truth and - most importantly - what the United States is supposed to be. Whether by design or simply from natural entropy, we’re tearing ourselves apart. So make your best life out of what is left of Old America, take what happiness you can find and cherish it. To paraphrase Dennis Miller, someday - sooner or later, but inevitably - we’ll be looking out across an unforgiving landscape of crumbling buildings, unabated violence and economic ruin, telling our grandchildren, “This is America. I wish you could’ve seen her in her prime. She sure was something.”
Blah Blah Blah Politics Politics Politics… Democrat or Republican, the poor stay poor. The rich stay rich and getting richer. Most of these communities been looking like this for well over 30 to 40 years. He’s talking about the 70’s the 70’s!!!! But your bringing up JOE BIDEN’s name???? Get Real!!! Let’s discuss Ronald Regan, we can start there.
I'm from Austintown, which is a suburb of youngstown, and grew up in this area my whole life. I went to youngstown state university, got multiple degrees, and have struggled for years after members of my family got hooked on drugs and hurt my life. It's a good area overall but also not much really going on economically here. My wife actually has had luck with work, and soon we will be moving, down to Cincinnati. Where she has a great promotion from her company and I have a job waiting making much more as well. It's definitely a big change since I've never lived in another area before but I'm excited and looking forward to the change.
@Gordy Skymop thanks! We are still house hunting for rentals at the moment down there. It's been a tough process but hopefully soon we can lock something in.
What happened to Youngstown? Manufacturing was pulling out of the Youngstown area. These employers provided jobs to people living in Youngstown, Lordstown, Warren, Niles, Canfield and the like. Residents, like my own family, wanted to sell their homes and move out of the area. There were jobs elsewhere. However, Trump went to Youngstown in 2017 to visit the Lordstown plant. He promised people that he would save the plant, and promised residents that manufacturing jobs would be returning to the region. He told the crowd: "Don’t move. Don’t sell your house.” He was the President of the United States. Surely he would keep his promise to save the plant. But Trump didn’t save the plant. He ignored it. He made those promises so he could try and remain in power. The General Motors Lordstown plant shut down. Can Biden fix it? No. Job loss is job loss. GM's former plant in Lordstown might return to mass vehicle production in 2022, creating thousands of jobs (if true). I'm not holding my breath for it.
Neither am I holding my breath. Been a lifelong resident. Sad..this plant is one of the youngest in GM's portfolio. Steel left for cheaper labor overseas...overnight...No warning What did people expect when suddenly you lose your income AND pensions overnight? Job training at 60+ is a pipe dream for most Re training at 50+ is tough but with tight competition. Re train or move? Who's gonna buy your house when no one has money.? All true scenarios. We are ripely placed along I-11 & I-80... industrial corridors equidistantly close to Cleveland ( port city) or Pittsburgh ( port city). 🤔🤔🤔 Some areas you might have driven through were always quasi-rural( Coitsville, Liberty/Hubbard,) I'm not sure where your Interviewee grew up, but...he's full of inaccuracies about a lot of things. Unsure as to who filled his head with some things. I grew up in the 50's--80's on the Northside...lots of ..inaccuracies and still live here😊
I grew up in here and its been going down for years. Drugs and McDonalds are the biggest employers. Houses are torn down because drugs and empty. Schools are lagging behind. Church is their only hope. Politicians take the money out of Youngstown and put it in the surroundings suburbs. Youngstown State is positive and hopeful. It could be a nice place however schools, jobs, better homes, prayers, and therapy is needed so bad here. The people need something to believe in once again and stability. They need leaders who are faithful and practice integrity daily.
The only way to save our country is to bring back manufacturing, and implement tariffs to protect the manufacturing jobs. It will mean much higher prices for consumer goods, but we can absorb that cost by conserving, repairing, and creating less waste.
Any entity, whether it be a company, an individual, or a country, cannot survive unless it is producing. The way to produce is through making products with value. We are seeing the decline of the US because of our lack of production. It’s that simple.
I have been watching Nicks channel for years and he has seen what’s happened to this great country, I drove a tractor trailer for over 40+ years and have seen with my own 2 eyes how this country has just gone to hell !!
I was born on the Northside but I grew up on the East Side. My grandfather owns "Brownlee's Mower Repair" there and it hurts to see how much Youngstown has declined. They keep trying to build it up with stores but most of the places that were there when I was little (I'm 21 now) have left, like McGuffy Rd for example so many things have closed down. I moved from Youngstown when I was 18, but I will always love that place. I just wish there was a way for us to build it back up
@Radioactive_baby ...... I bought a used riding mower from him many years ago.... I worked at that location when I was 16 and it was a gas station (Brown's Sohio)...
I live in Youngstown, and I don’t believe you got it right. Yes there are hard hit areas, but there are also thriving areas with wonderful people. The stores and restaurants are busy and traffic is picking up. Instead of bad mouthing Youngstown, let’s pray for it and for the citizens that live here.
Everytime I'm talking to friends about how they don't have to live where their grandparents lived Youngstown is the example I use. BTW, Nick's videos are great.
He's demonizing the people that live here and saying they're not doing anything to make it better when it's the governor's and presidents 80s 90s 2000s till today that are to blame for why Youngstown is where it is Ronald Reagan the the Bush family the clintons Donald Trump Obama's the only one who tried and what did the Republicans do where broke can't do this anymore John boehner from Ohio the leading Republican in the House of Representatives said no to infrastructure not including the Republican governors and instead of Ohio decade after decade blocking any Democratic president from getting help to Ohioans same people just need to get a job 😢 when there is no jobs in the state and the jobs that are around are for college educated how many people in Youngstown have a college education but they'll bring up the American dream when it's an American nightmare for people on the east side south side and west side of Youngstown Ohio that's why they're always will be to America's the rich and poor there is no in the middle

I think they should remodel some of those plants there so we can start making our own computer chips for our new cars that the car companies can't finish producing. That would help with some jobs in Youngstown. The car lots around my State look very sad and empty 😢
In my town, many old factories have been made into apartments. I think there is hope for Youngstown and places like it. Real estate has gone ballistic everywhere else. People are going to have to grow some balls and take a risk at the lower end.
Hi tech worker here. Respectfully, remodeling buildings cost more than building new construction. The buildings will need to be demoed. Chip manufacture needs educated employees that can program computers, and work with software mods. Modern chip making requires high tech clean rooms and computer operated automation.
Youngstown is 400 miles from NYC and Chicago and within a days drive of many major US population centers. It would be a great place to build and distribute Apple products.
Actually, many of the streets in northeast Youngstown in your opening segment were never occupied by houses in the first place. Youngstown annexed much of rural Coitsville Township anticipating growth of the city that never materialized.
I've driven through that neighborhood, also known as the Sharon Line, named for the train that used to run from Youngstown to Sharon, Pennsylvania. I remember reading somewhere that there was a "master plan" in Youngstown where the city would grow to about 250,000 residents, hence the "pre-building" of the East Side neighborhoods. However, as we all know, the steel industry in the United States went totally to shit, and much of the Sharon Line/NE Side would remain unbuilt. The city actually even permanently closed many of those streets a few years ago, and on my last trip there I noticed that a lot of them are now almost totally unrecognizable, with nature taking its course.
I did service all over Ohio in almost every city during the 80's. Youngstown didn't scare me much. Cleveland, East Cleveland, Dayton...those were much more risky.
I was in Panama a couple of years ago and drove around much of the country. There are a lot of truly poor people. They have no government subsidies like the US and still I didn't see much of this. It isn't poverty that causes this. Its people that make a slum not the geography.
I've lived in the Youngstown area for 42 years, and if you wanted to see the worst Y-town has to offer, you should have went to the South side or the East side. I remember in the 80's when the mafia ran the city it actually wasn't that bad. But when Strollo got popped and then flipped, that was it for the mob in the area. It seems like the drugs got 10x worse after the mob got knocked out of the box. Now, with GM gone and Vallourec (V&M Star) not being the area-savior it was hoped to be, there just isn't much here for jobs. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown is one of the highest-paying employers in the area, but it's a privately owned prison, and a horribly run one at that. I used to work there, so I know from experience how bad that place is. Now, Lordstown Motors is being sold to a Taiwanese (I think) company to make electric cars, but that could have been a couple thousand good paying jobs right there had it stayed American-owned. Now with foreign ownership who knows what they're going to do? It seems to be an exercise in futility, nothing seems to ever change in this area.
Beyond agree, when the Italian/jesuit mafia had more control of urban areas, at least whytes could live there, but italians simply were out bred, same with any European american, we don't make replacement for the future now anyway, it's obvious, go to any city and see a day care, all mu**d.
I live in Youngstown, originally from Erie PA. Both are very similar. Youngstown is just less populated and more abandoned. Most of the scum took off years ago to other cities. It was way more dangerous 20 years ago. But don’t get it twisted, Youngstown still can be sketchy in some parts. There are still shootings and robberies. I don’t feel unsafe because I’m not involved in criminal activity, and I don’t put myself in bad situations. It’s easy to buy an affordable house here and union labor work is hiring all the time. Majority of entry jobs start at $12-15 an hour. You can find a NICE house that’s been redone for between 60-100k. If you work remotely this is the place to move. If you’re starting a company this is the place to start it. Plenty of people who will work hard for you if you give them a good wage. Cheap taxes and cheap property. Youngstown area has the same amenities as other places only 10-15 mins away in Boardman or niles (suburbs). Just stay away from Warren…they are even worse off.
I don’t live in Youngstown but I work there. It feels quite literally like my “home away from home.” This feature focuses on what is gone, what is lost. But I see every day people committed to being a positive part of this community. On a side note I’m so sick of hearing all this harkening back to the steel mills shutting down and what a great place it was. Rose colored glasses. It’s the same mentality behind “make America great again.” We cannot go backwards. Looking back will never get us anywhere. Boo. I’m not picking up what you’re putting down. There’s more to the YO than this.
@@bellinghammond no I don’t work for either the government or YSU or the hospital. I work for a nonprofit located right in the middle of downtown. There is a robust and thriving entertainment district in Youngstown that most of the folks who complain “there’s nothing to do here” ignore completely.
Obviously you don't like the term MAGA but I don't exactly think it meant going back to the "old" days... I think it just meant putting America first and stop depending on foreign investing and influence... but besides that I agree

That’s not the north side. That’s the outer east side which was mostly rural to begin with. The person being interviewed doesn’t know what he’s talking about
I have lived here my whole life, I'm 42 now. I consider myself stuck here because there are no good jobs which makes it extremely hard to move away from here. There is severe drug use here. The city has began to tear down a lot of the abandoned houses but it is a huge hill to climb.
Was born in Youngstown, but grew up in Texas... thank God. Moved back to Youngstown a year ago and wow, this place is a shot hole. Thank you, parents. You saved my life. Work in the medical field in the Yo. Can confirm. Hospital is major employer here, but so is the EMS field. With so many private EMS companies, the field is in high demand.
I grew up in Mahoning county and worked in the mills and the Lordstown auto plant. I also exited 50 years ago, the best move I've ever made. Don't blame anybody but the denizens of the rust bowl where I was raised. They supported corruption, the mafia and unions that kept pressuring for impossibly high wages. Ohio needs a modern mind not the old ways of union thugs, political corruption and organized crime. Things change and the old ways don't work anymore.
@@ronaldhadley7129 Pretty much all my friends and relatives are gone, I have a cousin who lives in Warren but that's it. My husband and I moved here from Houston for his job (I know, definitely against the norm). Both of us have great jobs, so we're what our friends in Youngstown call "Youngstown Rich"--what would be considered middle class in Houston. We bought one of the old mini-mansions on the Northside for a good price. A lot of what seems to be holding back Youngstown is that almost everyone who lives here has grown up here. And Youngstown itself has a TERRRRRRRRRRIBLE reputation! Almost everyone I know lives in one of the more affluent or middle class 'burbs...Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Austintown, and they tell me how their parents forbade them from even going in the city limits growing up. It seems like everyone who's grown up here complains about how bad Youngstown is, but doesn't want to do anything to change it, from the average citizen to the politicians. And there is no new blood here in to inject any new ideas. My husband has a lot of ideas of what he would like to do to make Youngstown better, but I assume people here would be resistant. Oh well....
When the mob ran it, it’s was organized high crimes! Now the mob descendants are the law makers in this city but lives in the suburbs and they’re purposely are not trying to help the majority population which is brown people

Youngstown is my hometown also. We lived across the street from the steel mill in the 60's. We were dirt poor. I'm in California now, and would love to move back.
The tax rate doesn't matter to shipping jobs overseas, the cost of labor does. 20kusd per year is still way higher than the average earnings of workers in so many nations.

Living next door to Youngstown, there’s a lot wrong with this video. Focusing on the worst part of the city while majority of Youngstown (which includes boardman and austintown etc) are far nicer than this. On top of this manufacturing is not the future in any country let alone ours and we shouldn’t be striving to try and bring back low paying jobs that are hard to do when the future can be so much easier than that. Manufacturing is going to full automation very soon and that’s not going away anywhere.

Unity.

Point well taken I think your absolutely right.

It's an old gangster cronies high crime murder town. Some no go zones since the mlk riots

That's why America needs a UBI. Tax the robots to pay for it
Great story, but that isn't what happened in Youngstown. The jobs left. Lordstown GM just left. The Chevy Cruise is built in Mexico.

Yes, this is a global trend, and it has nothing to do with "Biden's fault".

A famous TH-camr lives here.
Exactly I live in Youngstown he's only focusing on the bad places.its bad places every city
True…I live in the area too and there is a lot of good. Mill Creek park is right by the one area he went through and it’s beautiful there. There’s bad in any area but there’s a lot of really nice people here too. And btw…in reference to the sign by the church, I do believe the prayers will help! 😌
I'd live there.

The Mayan cities were abandoned over a 200 year period, not overnight as some people think. US cities like Youngstown are falling apart at a much faster rate. The Mayans probably had no idea what the ultimate outcome was as their cities fell apart. We at least have their example to learn from (but we won't).
Yep. History repeats itself and many will never understand why.
The Mayans were wiped out by repeated droughts. The evidence is clear and it is no longer a 'mystery.'
It depends on what the people want in America, with democrats in charge this is what you get. Kinda looks like what happened to Detroit and other cities where dems held office.
I have to wonder to what extent the drug problem has and is accelerating that demise...
Take another look guys. I live in Youngstown. It's going strong. Beautiful Millcreek Parks. Bike paths, strong sense of community, new medical facility, downtown is still getting its face-lift. Would love to see something good about Youngstown. The town deserves it
Are you referring to the old North side hospital they closed and is getting overgrown and run down or the new hospital miles away in boardman? ?????
MillCreek Park is about the only place I return to when visiting family. The West Side was the last holdout of the city that was decent but even that is barely still inhabitable for working middle class families. Boardman, Canfield and Poland townships outside Greater Youngstown are the only places I’d consider raising a family. It’s hard to believe how many NEIGHBORHOODS are actually gone since I left in early 1990’s. GM Lordstown leaving nailed the coffin shut, IMHO.

You can't blame a president for a local government issue. I know we'll bounce back but we have to get rid of the big problem which is corruption at the highest local levels.

Agreed. He literally showed the 5 worst streets. No shots of downtown or the campus where it looks very nice..

Plenty of jobs now. Here in NJ, they're offering $20/hr for dishwashers, $35/hr for bus drivers with no takers.

Youngstown is clean because of the steel industry gone. So thank for that rather than blaming
The Us should ban offshoring
Goodness, this area collapsed long before Joe Biden. Industry left. Jobs were sent elsewhere. Youngstown even suffered greatly during
the Great Depression. Same story goes for Detroit. Charlie Bo has some sad footage especially of Detroit's East side. This situation
is repeated everywhere industry left. The same situation is rampant in England. It isn't a Black people or White people reason. When
jobs go, poverty enters, society often collapses. Those who are able to, move elsewhere; those who can't , remain, and things get
bleaker and bleaker. To be fair to both Youngstown and Detroit, many efforts are being made, and both cities have areas that are
growing and thriving. To say Biden wants communities to fail so he can remain in power is nuts. That would make no sense at all.
Poor Nick fooled by the republicans like Blaming President Biden for the gas. When Gas was high under trump, Before President Obama Left office.

I wish you interviewed my uncles and grandparents for this one… you’d find their perspective very interesting
WELL SAID SIR!!!!!!

No one can fix it
Neither am I holding my breath. Been a lifelong resident. Sad..this plant is one of the youngest in GM's portfolio.

What planet you on no such thing as cheap property taxes there
I don’t live in Youngstown but I work there. There’s more to the YO than this.
what do you do there? Is your job in any way connected with the government, college or the hospital mentioned?
@@bellinghammond no I don’t work for either the government or YSU or the hospital. I work for a nonprofit located right in the middle of downtown. There is a robust and thriving entertainment district in Youngstown that most of the folks who complain “there’s nothing to do here” ignore completely.
Obviously you don't like the term MAGA but I don't exactly think it meant going back to the "old" days... I think it just meant putting America first and stop depending on foreign investing and influence... but besides that I agree
I watch frequently and it really helpful to focus other states. I liked enough to join and I'll continue. This one you mentioned that prayers don't work but I can tell ou that prayers do work with faith. I advise you to seek people who do pray and open your mind 🙏
This version of America is depressing
It wasn't depressing last years when this was still the same issue just a different party in control?
That’s not the north side. That’s the outer east side which was mostly rural to begin with. The person being interviewed doesn’t know what he’s talking about
Right, and the brick road is Ayer’s st on the east side
So you choose to only show the abandoned houses but nothing else, meanwhile criticizing Biden as if he is ruining America. Thanks for that, Trumpster.
I left in 1979. I knew the end was inevitable. God bless Youngstown and it’s people.
@@ronaldhadley7129 Pretty much all my friends and relatives are gone, I have a cousin who lives in Warren but that's it. There were good people in the valley but the area had more than its share of criminals and undesirables. The valley never realized that work in the modern world requires productivity not knowing politicians or connections. A great myth is that steelwork is hard work, it isn't, I worked at Republic in the summer and most of the union brothers sat around doing nothing for hours. Featherbedding isn't viable in the modern competitive world.
Awww… I miss Mappy and his topsy-turvy family. 😭
I moved to California when I graduated, couldnt wait to move back, its home, its a great place to live, its still simple, its still normal, you can have your big cities, ill take my youngstown, wouldnt trade it for anything
Exactly the same way I wouldn't leave California. THIS Guy needs to make his videos and let the residents of that State or city provide the opinions. I read the comments and it seems that corrruption and the mafia which americans glorify so much. These wicked people have messed up these cities along with greedy rich people who had these businesses. They don't have to move their businesses. Plus america should tax them heavy and give the money to workers when they leave. Getting rich off of our labor and leaving. That's patriotic and NICK Don't say BOO to the Rich. oh trumper.
I have lived in Youngstown for 10 years. There are good areas and bad areas, and sometimes they are only a mile apart. There are good people to meet and fun things to do if you know where to look. Plus, mill creek park is 10/10.
Oh well....
I'm from Canton ohio last time I was in Youngstown 2007 idora park closed round 84 or 85 the mob used to run Youngstown now it looks like a ghost town
When the mob ran it, it’s was organized high crimes! Now the mob descendants are the law makers in this city but lives in the suburbs and they’re purposely are not trying to help the majority population which is brown people
I don't think it fair to blame Biden because most of these cities and not just these in Ohio were headed for the dumpster way before he came along.
Communism? It’s not communism to take care of your most vulnerable citizens. When people cannot find work and cannot afford to move and are stuck I need help, you don’t just tell them too bad! You help them. That’s what the government is supposed to be there for. To help us. Not just to help the rich get richer
Youngstown was a mafia stronghold. Commercial Shearing was a huge hydraulic mfg of pumps, motors, valves, cylinders etc.
Yep, don't forget about GF and republic hose too.
Mafia schmaifa. A few idiots running card games and selling bags of weed is about it. The Real Mafia is the graft in city hall, county, state and federal politics. And dont get me started on the money changers.
@@aidankirby8412 Don't know how old you are but it was. Also I agree our Govt is the problem.
@@aidankirby8412 murder town USA according to Time magazine. I grew up there it was a Mafia stronghold, now even the mafia can't make money in the rust bowl.
I came here after seeing US News best places to retire list. This was listed as number 9 but had the most affordable homes. Now we see why.
Your stuff is getting better and better!
Ed O Neill (Al Bundy) is from Youngstown OH
Nick, you are actually a pretty cool dude. You have the mentality of a more normal era such as the 90s and early 2000s.
I’m literally in Youngstown right now and this pops up 😂😂. Please Do Farrell Pennsylvania it’s pretty close to Youngstown and it’s BAD!!
What happened to Farrell
@@NickJohnson Probably same thing. Farrell is a shithole too, but I don't think it's as big as Y-town.
I absolutely love Ohio especially the rural areas. Towns like Youngstown are indeed rough around the edges so to speak but somehow I still find beauty in them... and I moved here from Florida 9 years ago. Imagine that!
Whew you should do High Point NC. I’m from Cleveland Ohio and we don’t mess with the YO (Youngstown) I live in Raleigh now and high point to me is NC’s Youngstown
I need to see it
It’s all about the feeling of futility
It's probably ran by democrats.
See im from youngstown and just went to cleveland about a week ago and drove in through the east side. Id honestly rather drive through the east side of my city because there is way less people
@@twomp4560 were you born in Youngstown and how many years did you live there
This has been Tim Ryan's congressional district for the last 100 years!!
Timmy!
Lying Ryan
Ohio has had a Republican Governor for the last18 yrs. I part of their job to help bring jobs into the state.
"From Youngstown Ohio, came Boom Boom Mancini, A lightweight contender, like father like son"
Warren Zevon- Boom Boom Mancini
Respect for visiting my home town. I have been here my whole life. Yes it's poor here and yes there is drugs and at time lots of violence. Only the strong survive here. And yes we are trying to make it a better place but it will take time
This is exactly what walkway bare shelves wants to happen.
Manufacturing is going to full automation very soon and that’s not going away anywhere.
but then how many services jobs will be done by AI? People have to react to constant change.
@@nickdoughty518 automation is coming for everything, that's a different issue that will cause a drastic change in the way our society works. No idea what that looks like honestly.
@@Dougie085 me neither.
Everyone who lives in OH knows what happened to Youngstown.
It’s not only the outsourcing of jobs. it was a huge mafia area. Was Called car bomb USA at one point
