Seen this episode around age 12 found girl tied up to be rather disturbing and to be shown at 4 in the afternoon in 1978 suprises me as tv was very conservative then
Friday: You keep yourself in pretty good shape don't you Mr. Lampe? Chief Lampe: You mean good enough to commit murder? 😎 The look on Friday's face after that was like "Jesus this fucking guy has an answer for everything."
I love this episode, how the old man just messes with them the whole time. Friday and Gannon look like asses here; they have such tunnel vision on suspects that it never occurred to them to say, "Are you former law enforcement or something?" which they certainly would if they were at a party and he were talking about investigative procedures and evidence analysis in such detail.
In fairness, early in the episode, Lampe confirmed that he was a lifelong reader of detective magazines, so Gannon thought that he was simply a crime buff. And Lampe had no memorabilia from his police career on his walls (because he was retired and wanted to live a quiet life). So Gannon had no indication that Lampe was retired law enforcement.
Every once in a while, a friend of mine will text me with something like: "You gotta roll the finger print boy!" and we'll laugh on that for a little while. See my other reply (buried in another reply here somewhere) to understand why.
Friday only showed him respect after Captain Brown showed up . Before that Joe thought he was the murderer. The Chief owned him in this episode. For every question Friday had Lampe had a one-liner for him. Friday: "Oh we'll remember" Lampe: "Remember that glass of water and those perfume bottles too!" 🤣🤣🤣 Friday should have apologized 😎
I think Joe and Bill were respectful to Mr (Chief) Lampey. The Chief was kinda playing a bit of a game with Joe and Bill. Sure he could have ID'd himself as a (retired) policeman right away but he looks like he was more interested in seeing if the "younger" detectives had any Moxie on the ball. Think about it this way, Chief Lampey (as a representative of ANY senior "tradesman") probably spent half of his time learning his promoted position and the other half teaching his prior rank to an underling. when we discover that "Hugh" (Captain Hugh Brown) was a neophite to Chief Lampey it all kind of clicks into place. I think Chief Lampey was pleased with Joe and Bill's work (and you just know that Hugh woulda caught an earful had they not been as well seasoned as they were). The fact that Joe and Bill invited Chief Lampey in for the "Big Bust" was just a way of acknowledging (and showing the ultimate respect to him) for what the chief represented to them. Even Joe's line after the chief told them THEY'd solved the case ("Did we?") further supports that thought. All in all, THIS was one of the better episodes, not so much about solving a case but an acknowledgement about those who mentor us (regardless of the "trade").
I wonder if “Old Man Calvin” was friends with “Alfred” from the 1960’s “Bat Man” TV show?! LOL!! 😂 Nothing beats this era of “Police” & “Detective” TV 📺 Show’s 😃

It looks like an actual dead body; about the ONLY clue of "trickery" can be seen @ 5:02. That bend in the "knee latex" looks just a bit too rubbery.

Old school style at that
Burt Mustin really shines in this episode.
He shines in every show he's in and there's must be a 100.seen him on almost every show made in 60s and 70s but never seen him in any westerns.
He really did,didn't he?
Imdb says mustin was in several westerns. Gunsmoke, bonanza, alias smith and jones etc..
I just found out... he had a wife but no kids ever!
One of my favorite shows, love the style ,cars, all of it' i grew up with all of it, my kind of time.
Burt Mustin was such a unique character. He didn't really hit big until his mid 70s
