On a side note, I have addressed this 10 days ago, and multiple times to individuals since, and I say again - For anyone wondering if my WF-1000XM5 reviews were tested on a pre-production unit, it was not. Reviews were done based on a retail unit with the latest firmware 2.0.1 installed. As a non-priority reviewer I got the unit the day after the launch, the same day the firmware came out. And that same day, I updated the unit, tested it, filmed and published a video.
Moving forward, I will not respond to any questions about whether this is a pre-production unit as this topic has been addressed ad nauseum. Thank you!

Aaron, thanks for the videos. I have heard that Sony sent out pre launch xm5's to testers and the final product is a lot more polished, are you sure you have the final version? Also, not sure if you agree but I think ANC tests from noise produced from speakers in a room may not always be the most accurate. When I use ANC, the noise come from the surroundings with varying distances. Could the results be different when these are actually used outside?

Wf1000xm5 noise cancelling seems amazing compared to xm4s. Definitely worse than the m5s though. I just wish they had more customizable controls.
I have these headphones and like to watch these videos for fun. I like the headphones more because they are louder and much more comfortable to wear but have the earbuds for working out. To me the sound quality is very similar and is not compromised with the earbuds being so much smaller
I use the noise canceling for sleeping i have xm4 WF and XM5 WF dose better Job for using if u your like me and sleep with ear buds

Head phones isolate better cause of the passive absorption. You will never get it fully quite, you need to play music at the same time. The quitest environment you can get is using in ears and at the same time a sound absorber like lumberjacks use. No joke I fly like this and it's awesome.

Hello, I have a question! Is the sound better with the in-ear or over-ear Sony XM5
I want to ask someone who owns the Comply foam tips. Do they really improve ANC and sound quality over the standard tips that come with the earbuds?
Thanks for doing such detailed comparisons. I had a couple of questions:
1. I see a lot of people on the Sony subreddit saying that if you go into the headphones app and turn off adaptive sound control, then drag the slider under ambient sound control all the way to the right, and then slowly drag all the way to the left it will fix the rapid changing of anc levels. Can you test this and see if you notice an improvement?
2. You mentioned sidetone can't be turned off on the wh-1000xm5, but I've seen some people say you can turn it off and others say the headphones only play ambient sound when you're talking. Can you test if anc stays on during a call when you're not talking? My biggest complaint with my xm4 is the pass through picking up every little sound while I'm on a call even when I'm not talking. In a noisy airport or office it's almost impossible to hear what the person I'm talking to is saying because of background noise / keyboard keys and mice clicking, etc.

I own the WH-1000XM5’s (over ear). I can confirm that the ANC stays on when you’re on a call even if you’re not talking. You can toggle between ANC and Ambient Mode using the button on the left side.

Avoid sony TWS like the plague. WF1000xm4 user here. 1st pair got replaced within warranty, replacement pair is draining battery as well (1.5.0) but I am out of warranty. They don't even accept paid service (in my region at least). Wfxm5s are reported on reddit to have battery issues as well. Stick to the over ear ones.

If you want it for working out, then earbuds are the best option, because they are waterproof.
The comfort of the WH-XM5 while wearing a hat/ keps mostly like me was bad. Also the ANC in store while having people talking next to me, the XM4 did a better job in my opinion. There for i ended up with the bose SE for 170$ for now and maybe getting the XM5 earbuds later 😊
Please review status audio between 3anc. 3 drivers on each earbud. I'm curious to hear your opinion on it

I used to have WHXM4 it was good until I heard cracking noise which irritates me alot😢maybe from the movable hinges. Now I own WHXM5, Love it 🤍 and also it does not hurt my ear n head & it’s lighter. Wish it won’t give me cracking sound after few months like what my XM4 did.🤞

As far as I can tell, any changes in ANC is noticeable but subtle and does not impact sound

Hi Aaron, the wf XM4s are on clearance sale now and available at S$150 cheaper than the wf XM5s. Do you think that Sony's latest is worth the price difference?
From what I've been able to tell is that the wf1000xm4 is only marginally worse than the xm5's. However, that is with the wf versions, the ear buds. The wh100xm4's, which are the headphones, are significantly inferior to their successors, the wh1000xm5's.

I (also?) prefer headphones for sound and noise isolation or cancellation, and use earbuds mainly for portability (both to carry and to wear).
Wh1000xm5 are too big for my head even at the smallest setting. Very frustrating!

I have XM5 earbuds and XM5 headphones. Your sound samples with the earbuds sounded like they didn't have a good seal and lacked bass. Just last night I compared my XM5 earbuds and headphones for sound quality and it was no contest. The earbuds have much better clarity, detail and soundstage. I don't hear any hiss with either products. The XM5 earbuds can become a bit uncomfortable, but otherwise I prefer them to the XM5 headphones. Choosing tips for the XM5 earbuds can be problematic, but I'm currently liking SpinFit W1 tips.

I also own both of them but contrary to your experience, I find out the WH (headphone) produced more detailed sounds compared to WF (eadbuds). I hear some background sound with more clarity on WH, as if in WF I had to try a little bit harder to hear it
WF can go toe to toe with WH depends on the song genre. in Acoustics sometimes I find out WF is slightly better in terms of clarity. while in EDM the WH is on another level

@@newwen2102 I can't say for sure which has better noise cancelling, although I suspect the earbuds are best if you get a good seal. If using for a long time the headphones are more comfortable than the earbuds.

Why do reviewers never talk about the horrible mic quality of Xm5s in a noisy outdoor environment
My goal is to get the best ANC the market has to offer. I don't really care if it is from a headphone or earbud. Do you guys think i should aim for the Wh1000xm5 or the Bose QC earbuds 2?
(Due to working in a super noisy environment, the best anc is crucial to me).
I believe the QC earbuds 2 are the best earbuds for ANC on the market, and the xm5s are the best when it comes to ANC with over ear headphones, so it depends if you want buds or over ear headphones. I've got the QC earbuds 2 and they're great, the ANC is honestly crazy. I find that they are pretty portable and easy to just take with you anywhere. I still wanna buy the wh1000xm5s though because I'm curious to try em haha
The graphs of all of these look horrible. Sony really tries to optimise these for the sound cancelling and while it works for that, they are just way too boomy and muddy sounding.
I own the XM4 earbuds & the XM3 headphones. Not really tempted to upgrade (and the XM5 headphones can't be folded).

I own those too. But I might just upgrade the earbuds because of the battery issue on the xm4 right earbud. My xm3 headphones still work like a charm.
I compared my xm3 with the new apple headphones, the xm3 are much better, the apples sounded so bad, are the xm5 better than the xm3?
I honestly do disagree with ur result on the transparency mode as Apple AirPods Max still leads the pack in that category for headphones and AirPods Pro 2 for earbuds…

Great reviews as usual but I was very disappointed with the Wf-1000xm5's. Not comfortable for me and keep coming loose in my ears. Tried every size tips and they are no better. I don't like the foam tips either and for me ANC is nowhere near as good as the Bose Quietcomfort earbuds II or airpods pro 2

I like wearing earbuds at work but I am nice enough to respond to people when I wear earbuds, transparency mode makes it easier. Same reason I bought the original link buds even though I have the wf-1000xm5. Not everybody has the same selling points.

The bad thing is that the wfxm5 has very bad bass, I understand that sony has opted to improve the treble and midrange that were missing from the wfxm4, but hey, they took away the punch of the wfxm4.

ok so day 1 of wearing the new XM5’s & im honestly disappointed…firstly the noise cancelling is not as good as the XM4’s & my guess is it’s due to the fit not being as snug so I guess the passive NC is way worse…
Also wtf happened to the voice over?!! I found that super useful, the voice prompt would tell me how much battery I had left , which device I’m connected to & also which sound mode I selected..All now Gone which for me is super annoying & a huge fail from Sony.

I agree, i was sony wh/wfb1000 xm4 user but i switched to Sennheiser tw momentum 3, another world specially on high volume music much better than sony( plane sound)

I switched to Sennheiser MTW3 after my Sony WF-XM4 stopped working. I like them better than the Sony, and they are also much more comfortable. A bit too much bass out of the box.
There’s still room for improvement.
