I fell in love with JJ’s music when “Naturally” came out, but lost track of him for a while. When Clapton recorded “Cocaine” I learned JJ had written it, and it brought me back around to Cale’s other albums and I’ve never stopped listening to him since then. Yes, Eric brought him into the mainstream, but his songs were so good that I have to believe the SOMEbody would have popularized him sooner or later.
Such a great man. Met him outside the Bottom Line in NYC in the 90’s. I ran into Rock Frisco, his keyboard player on the street, and I told him I loved JJ. He went in the bus, parked nearby, and asked him to come out-he did. Shook my hand, as gentle as ever, and we chatted for a quick minute. Went in to the show later which was amazing. RIP JJ.
I have now truly become acquainted with JJ Cale- I have fallen in love with all of his music & he is right up there with Eric Clapton in my opinion- I never get tired of listening to or hearing either of them!!! When I was at Colorado State University, I met a group of guys born and raised in Oklahoma. Some were going to school there and a few others just moved there to be with their buddies and work in a different state. They all shared many of the qualities JJ Cale had - honest, insightful, humble and a dry sense of humor. I'm a big fan of JJ and my buddies from OK.

I was sitting in a jail cell when I heard a song called "call me a doctor" ( I was seen buying some reefer as JJ calls it) in 1970 or 71 cant remember One of the first time he was ever played on radio I know cause I been in that jail listening long enough to know the Natural album his first was just released I was 20 yr old.Anyway I was so knocked out I wanted to try and bust out lol I had to hear that album badly. It has been my absolute favorite album all these years thats addicting as you say. In fact I just bought a cd from amazon with 50 of his best ( I could have added a few)songs on it and ready to start being addicted all over again. I litterally lost my legs when I heard he passed. It was awfull as I'm sure you know.

That the Guitar was actually in Tune ! to be in tune is an un- natural state... since all of the billions of other possibilities are OUT OF TUNE . ...the player has to Force the guitar into tune...and of course it will not stay in tune long.

Simplicity is a form of art,that's JJ.But try to recreate his songs and you'll fail miserably at it both tune and the the tone/sound wise.JJ is one of a kind and there would never be another one like him.
I discovered JJ after I got involved in radio over 30 years ago. I grew up listening to college radio & some of the corporate radio stations, which were not what they are nowadays....monotonous repetition of the same old 1200 songs, or music lacking depth. Even when listening to college radio (in NYC radius) I do not recall hearing JJ Cale. It is only when I got involved with an NPR affiliate radio station did I become knowledgeable of his music, and 'boy' did he catch my ears, especially since I was so into electric guitar. He always had a simple style but with individuality & definition, almost like in the style of Harvey Mandel, but only because of the individuality and simplicity; or maybe low-key is a better terminology, not aggressive in their picking styles, yet well-defined. There was always something about the simplicity of this man's style that grabbed me, plus the genius that emanated from his music. They just don't make them like this anymore, and even if they did, JJ was as individual as they come, never to be duplicated....as can be said about many true artisans! I never knew him personally, but through his music I am confident I knew him well and can say....he was a wonderful soul.

He spent all his days playing the guitar, and messing with the sound, recording, trying different tones. It was all he ever did, his job was his passion. He was all about his guitars, he would sit and play just for himself, and Christine said that he would make the most beautiful music when he played for himself on the porch, just enjoying his time.

Fresh out of the US Army living in Portland, Oregon in 1975, I was looking thru the want ads in the newspaper for a job. A black man came in to pick up lunch and asked me if I was looking for a job. I said yes and he said he was a contractor and needed an employee. So I went to work with him that day. We agreed on $125 a week and I was crawling under houses replacing sewer lines, etc. His name was Ken Johansen and never paid me a red cent! One day driving me home he played the JJ Cales "Naturally" tape, either CD or 8 track, I don't remember now, and the song Magnolia came on. He told me that was him singing drunk. I knew he was full of shit but that became one of my favorite songs.
Being English Eric Clapton is a household name. I knew nothing about JJ Cale THE Tragedy is he's passed away but hit fame with Eric before the end. RIP JJ

Yeah I think Clapton as a guitarist is overrated - he himself got tired of the ‘guitar god’ persona he took on. Cale is a better overall musician, guitarist, songwriter, in my view. But Cream was great, and he was integral to Cale’s career by popularizing After Midnight, which prompted Leon Russell to put his first record out

Count Blue... 1975 was when a woman friend turned me on to " Troubador" album. The sound on THAT record was not muddy...it was perfect. I am a 40 year sound engineer who Designs and builds Loudspeakers for a living in Boulder Colorado. " Traveling Light " was my favorite song on there....who knows how J.J. got all that sound on that cut. Magic.
I had a good friend, years ago, who introduced me to JJ's Troubadour. It took a while, but its the only thing I can chill to. This friend also introduced me to Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection, Hawkwind's Levitation and Jethro Tull. I was 17, and he five years older. What treasure he showed me !! I love blues and always have , but I never heard of jj cale until I saw eric Clapton playing with him on you tube..He really is original and I like his style of playing. He reminds me of Bob Dylan in his singing he sort of mumbles but I still like it.
JJ was a big fan of Dylan. I read that in one interview. He mentioned him as one of his biggest inspiration, saying something like "No one can beat Dylan in songwriting."

What a great interview. Thanks for uploading this. Some days all I want to listen to is J J Cale, playing music or talking. I was lucky enough to see him live in a super-rare visit to the UK. He played Hammersmith Odeon. The house lights were still on when a guy with a guitar wandered over to the mic and started sound checking. The audience carried on chatting among themselves. Then he started playing. And singing. This is a guy who had sold out Hammersmith Odeon, and thousands of his fans right there in front of him didn't recognise him till he started playing. 😬 That was pre-TH-cam though, and you didn't see many pics of him in the papers either.
Great story. Americans didn't want to come to Europe often, unless they were huge mainstream stars... J.J. was more low-key, he didn't seek much fame. That's why he avoided touring too much outside American border. Good for him I guess. Me, as an European, would love to have an opportunity to see him live. No longer possible, though. And when it still was, it wasn't, because wouldn't visit my country anyway. And I would be too young to even know about his music. Well, I can still enjoy his huge legacy, his records

I love blues and always have , but I never heard of jj cale until I saw eric Clapton playing with him on you tube..He really is original and I like his style of playing. He reminds me of Bob Dylan in his singing he sort of mumbles but I still like it.
JJ was a big fan of Dylan. I read that in one interview. He mentioned him as one of his biggest inspiration, saying something like "No one can beat Dylan in songwriting."
Best musician who ever lived, but he clearly loves his chang 🤷🏼♂️❤️

What a great interview. Thanks for uploading this. Some days all I want to listen to is J J Cale, playing music or talking. I was lucky enough to see him live in a super-rare visit to the UK. He played Hammersmith Odeon. The house lights were still on when a guy with a guitar wandered over to the mic and started sound checking. The audience carried on chatting among themselves. Then he started playing. And singing. This is a guy who had sold out Hammersmith Odeon, and thousands of his fans right there in front of him didn't recognise him till he started playing. 😬 That was pre-TH-cam though, and you didn't see many pics of him in the papers either.
Great story. Americans didn't want to come to Europe often, unless they were huge mainstream stars... J.J. was more low-key, he didn't seek much fame. That's why he avoided touring too much outside American border. Good for him I guess. Me, as an European, would love to have an opportunity to see him live. No longer possible, though. And when it still was, it wasn't, because wouldn't visit my country anyway. And I would be too young to even know about his music. Well, I can still enjoy his huge legacy, his records
That would be in 75 or 76?I was there and it was a truly memorable evening. Crazy Mama sounded so sweet. And JJ . And the band were so cool.

@dansmithwave Aha. I was lucky to have been introduced to JJs music early on. I think it was his first visit to UK when I saw him.
Other than Hank Mobley I've loved J.J. Cale since 1984.
