What do the North Pole and our cabin have in common? We're both experiencing a polar vortex!! If you're not familiar with the term, it's basically extremely cold storm of ice and snow, normally only found at the North and South poles of our planet. But occasionally, the storm comes down south, and temperatures drop as low as -40! This can result in icy weather as far south as California, Texas and even Mexico. In the past we've escaped to warmer weather in our van, but this time we've decided to stay in the eye of the storm and embrace the weather in the woods! As you can imagine, braving a storm with limited supplies and power off the grid poses additional challenges. One of our main sources of heat is our wood stove, which makes things precarious when we run out of wood. So we raided our stash and got enough to hopefully last the storm. And speaking of logs, we finally got our Cinderella incinerator toilet working!! Yes, it literally burns our poop! And no, we won't be using that as a heat source. We made due with our wood stove, though it was still freezing. And while not having to go to the bathroom outside was a game changer, we gave a little peak behind the scenes on how frustrating it's been not being able to wash the dishes--something that's easy to take for granted. But despite these challenges, we were still able to find joy in the beauty of the storm, and reaffirmed that we can truly handle anything life throws our way, as long as we have each other! Do you have any tips on making it through the cold months? What keeps you going? Comment below!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Pellet stove is way less expensive - the initial cost is higher but it pays for itself quickly. Adding sone wi D turbines will help with power when there’s no sun or when the solar panels are covered in snow.

This is how we would heat water long ago in the days before the electric hot water cylinder was installed. A pot for small jobs could be left on top of the chip heater while it, via a wet-back, was heating water in the overhead tank for baths, laundry and so on.

When I was a kid we lost power for a few days. We used snow melted on the wood stove and heated to wash the dishes. Don't forget to clean your chimneys, this will prevent a chimney fire. Sending you both prayers and thanks for sharing your journey with us. Eventually you may want to have curtains over your windows when it's that cold, and also at night. This will help with heat loss .

    • @codycopithorne6294
      @codycopithorne6294 ปีที่แล้ว +13

2 wood stoves mean twice the snow that can be melted and heated up. As a kid, we moved into a house that was heated with a wood stove, so we could cook and have hot water for other uses. No indoor biffy though, so I know what it's like to head outside when it's below -40. 🥶💨

Well, living in a arctic country i know you did just fine. I heat my cabin with wood, and also a heat pump, but that works only down to -25 C. It is vital to always expect the worst, and prepare for it, and then experience that it wasn't that bad, only cause you prepped for it. -40 is cold, but also invigorating for body, mind and soul. I love the sound the snow makes under your feet when it is that cold, i love the sound from the forest when the trees shoot, and the air is so cold it feels like menthol in your lungs. I also love the lovely heat from a woodstove and a big cup of hot chocolate.. You did good! ☺💛

I really think Masonry Stoves (kachelofen/kakelugn) should be more of a thing as they as ssssooooo efficient (don’t need as much wood & radiate heat for 10+ hours depending on size so can get a full night sleep without topping up the fire), heat the whole home & you can design them to cook & heat water - excellent back up for cold climes ❤

Your situation reminds me of February 1985. It was -40 degrees. We got a fire call. I was a volunteer. My car barely started, even though it was plugged in. It took minutes to get my engine running on all cylinders. My automatic transmission didn’t want to engage. My power steering barely worked and made bad noises. When I arrived at the scene I left my car running. The fire sprinkler pipes in the building had frozen and caused the pipes to burst. There was no fire. Thank heaven for small favors. Carry on, ladies. My best to you.

Well done! A tip from someone who works outside in the Northern Canadian Prairie Winter. Leather gloves when working with metal (or anything for that matter). Insulated with wool is best. Anything synthetic just freezes and the leather is wind proof too. And if you're going to be spending prolonged time outside in the real cold, look into upgrading to fur. Don't think you're really going to need it in Nova Scotia but with climate changed, these prolonged cold snaps are becoming "normal". Fur is sustainable and if properly cared for can last a lifetime. It also supports indigenous communities. (and yes, I said "upgrading". Fur is exponentially superior to synthetic fibers.) As for other life-in-the-cold tips, a pot of water on the stove helps to maintain humidity inside and bring the toilet seat inside if you're thinking of using the outhouse in cold weather. Just reverse the seat bolts for that you can put the seat on the posts to keep it in place when using it. My sister uses an insulated grocery bag to get it from A to B.

I have to say ladies that even though I am amazed at every video you post every new video gets me more amazed at all the things the two of you have been able to do and how much you have learned about living and creating a warm space in which to live and love. You go girls.
P.S. My whole growing up years in Nova Scotia were spent going to the outdoors outhouse and that seat sure gets cold some days.

My good friends live about 500 miles north of NS and it has been 35 below Fahrenheit for a couple of weeks. It h as also been snowing when it warms up a bit. Your description of what it feels like when it is super cold out reminded me of my junior year in college when we had a month when it never got above zero F. It was just painful walking to class and to the library at night. You are really resourceful to live off grid this winter.

You guys did great for your first deep freeze. I currently live in Labrador (where Tyler used to live) but I have also lived in the NWT and Nunavut. There is something about the deep freeze and winter. I would have probably melted snow on the woodstove and put it in a bucket to wash the dishes. Then throw the water outside when I was done
As a future trip: you should look at taking the van up the dempster highway - maybe under the midnight sun. You can cross the arctic circle and take photos at the sign. You can drive all the way to Tuk and put yourselves in the arctic ocean (I've done it). I love late August because the bugs aren't so bad and you get the fall colours of the tundra (it looks like the land is glowing).
You would also like the Inuvik Greenhouse and be inspired by growing under the arctic sun.

my partner and i bought a house last year and us too, weren't prepared for the Nova Scotia polar vortex! our pipes ended up freezing and we had no water, 1 hole in the ceiling and a huge mess of our basement later, we were able to find the pipe before it exploded! additionally we only have electric heating and it was too cold for our baseboards to heat the home, so we could only get it as warm at 13C so you guys did pretty good with that wood stove, i am impressed! We learned from the polar vortex that if you keep your water running when it dips below -25 (basically turning the tap on and letting the water run) you can avoid a frozen pipe, Im not sure if thats possible for you both to keep your water on all night but if you can this will help next time! also we learned about pipe warmers - go to your local hardware store and purchase a few they do use power but they are like mini furnaces designed to wrap around your piping and they'll kick on when temp. starts to fall (or you can turn them off for times you done need them) BTW i am also 27 and learning how to take care of my own home, so i really enjoy watching your videos and getting the motivation to become more self sufficient and sustainable!!

You guys are doing a lot correctly. Put more wood indoors so it's
accessible or on the porch and cover the wood. Make some thicker fabric window treatments so they keep the warmth of your stove in. Those large water bottles should be indoors not too close to the firebox and you can use warm water for yourself and do wash up dishes, etc. Keep your boots near the heat, and any wool socks! The rest of the water should be used for drinking, etc. For things to keep busy indoors, learn to knit, create a large comforter, make socks and wool hats. Read, write, letter writing to family and friends and
Painting, painting on wood or an old handsaw, cook, bake, card playing, play chess, get rest, and keep the firebox going, keep warm, solitaire for couples, checkers, computer games perhaps, taking care of each other and keep in contact the local 1st responders and let your families know how you both are
doing. Keep up the good work and never give up. You guys are risk takers and the challenges ahead will be conquered one day at a time...and don't go outside if you don't have to. Take care and God Bless! 🧐🌲🌲👍

To do dishes, find you a very big pot. Fill it with snow or emergency water. Put it on the wood burning stove. Once the water is warm enough you can wash the dishes in the pot. Then dump the dirty water outside when you are finished. Also can be used as bathing water if you cant take showers. Hope that helps!

Awesome video, ladies. You really showed off not only how bloody cold it can get in Canada but how resilient Canadians can be faced with the challenges that cold bring to us every winter. No doubt that being off grid poses it’s own unique challenges so redundancies in back up systems are an absolute necessity as well. Although my cabin (in Vermont) has electricity, I’ve found that when the water pump cannot run, neither do the faucets and the water pump…..so no toilet. Hauling water out of the creek (when it’s not frozen over) and keeping a massive pot of water on the wood stove covers both the flushing and washing needs for the duration of a storm. In your case, why not heat a big pot of water on your stove for dishes and keep some paper plates and bamboo cutlery which you can use to start or maintain the fire?
When all else fails, I do have the option to return home to Montreal, but look at all the fun and challenges I’d be missing….am I right?!
