I just saw him do this in Boston last night--absolutely enchanting. He also did, as a last-minute change to the program, a suite of dances by Gaspar Sanz that he ended with the famous "Canarios" and then the cadenza written for it by Joaquin Rodrigo that brought the house down. He is a monster.
When Aniello Desiderio plays Koyunbaba it sends shivers down my spine. His right hand is so damn powerful. I saw him live, more than ten years ago and he played part IV as an encore and it blew me away. It was as if he had hidden a Marshall stack inside of his completely unamplified guitar.
and when people say about desiderio that he's too free and not enough in the style, le'ts just all remember that if you play dowland, scarlatti, or even your own compositions, we want to hear MUSIC. If there is a specific line that the stylistic approach pushes you to play in a certain way doesn't feel good, let's forget it and make the best of the music. Dowland will never come back to tell you it was a mistake or the best idea ever

Let’s not forget the most important person here Carlo Domeniconi who will live on forever in what he has created. I think he would be please with this performance , imo it can not be played better.
Excellent interpretation. Normally i would frown on the performer adding and neglecting parts of a written piece, but i think this worked really well and retained its flavour,
I discussed this with a number of people who perform this piece and there's no easy answer to this. The sheet music is really a snapshot, a captured moment in time of an endless improvisation in c-sharp minor. I played this for David Russell in a master class and I was playing one note "wrong" (i.e. not as written in the sheet music). He pointed this out, but then said (I'm quoting from memory): "but it really doesn't matter because this is really an improvised piece". Since then I've seen lots of variations in the performance of Koyunbaba - some work better, some not.

This is beyond avant-garde. Those awful tempo changes, god, it is not a damn sine wave you are trying to portray. It is an elegant musical piece. Intense presto though, very likable.
I have been following Aniello Desiderio for many years and I regard him as one of the greatest guitar maestros in the world today.
