    I’ve heard opinions of love and hate of this engine. My conclusion, having just purchased one in a van, is that , as with anything, there’s simply no way to know. You do the best you can with what you have from where you are, and then Life lifes.

    Great video, thanks for your thoughts. I just bought a 2006 F350 6.0 a little over a year ago and love it so far. I'm the 2nd owner and the truck has 42k original miles on it. I appreciate your history report and others who contribute on TH-cam. As I try to educate myself on these trucks, videos like this have been very helpful. Although my truck is in immaculate condition, the parts are old at this point. So I constantly am thinking about whether to be proactive with certain things or just wait until there is an issue. You could spend $8-11k and do all the required maintenance to bulletproof the engine and get several years and miles out of it. Probably still a cheaper option that buying something newer. My point of view could be biased as well. I specifically purchased the truck to be long term truck for us. I have no intentions of selling, just want to slowly build it up the way I prefer and have a dependable truck for my family to make memories with. Thanks again and good luck with your decision.

      Make sure you have a monitor for the engine, such as the edge insight that you see in this video or something similar. You want to monitor the delta between coolant and oil temperature. Doing 70mph on the highway it should not exceed 15 deg after a 30min drive. Also do not let the boost go above 28psi, if it is you have turbo charger issues/stuck veins. Change oil every 8000km (5000miles). I personally would not "pre-bulletproof" the motor if it is running strong like mine is then leave it be and keep an eye on it. Possibly put some money away in savings to bulletproof it if it does break on you. Good luck with your 6.0! There are good ones out there.

    • @Nathan-gy7oz
      @Nathan-gy7oz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's really helpful and raises a couple more questions. I am currently monitoring using TorquePro on remote device, hope to upgrade my radio head-unit so my gauges are displayed on screen. I'll be sure to keep a close eye on those metrics. With the oil, I've always used Amsoil in my other vehicles going between 10-15k miles or changing the oil annually if I don't exceed the 10-15k miles each year. Do you have any data or experience with using their products in diesel applications? I've started my savings for bulletproofing, feels like I'm funding another child's college education!

    • @amped79
      @amped79  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My opinion is absolutely not more then 8000 miles on the oil in the 6.0 as the entire fuel injection system relies on oil to operate properly, my opinion is it doesnt matter if you use a good oil like amsoil or another quality synthetic i believe in this. Injectors are expensive, oil is cheap. Personally I changed my oil every 5000miles with shell rotella T6 5w-40 religiously since it had 25k miles on it. Only use motorcraft filters as well - proprietary design.

    pretty much everything listed that needed to be fixed would be common with any truck on the road except for the ficm and SCT fitting leak. The oil leak you had to have fixed with warranty isnt a common issue at all with the 6.0 and I cant remember when Ive heard of one leaking like that. Everyone is so scared of the 6.0 because of the people claiming its going to explode. ITs a GREAT engine. These people blowing their 6.0s are usually having them way over tuned and hot rodding them or the few unlucky ones that blow head gasket because of the EPA mandated EGR cooler fails.
    These same people that say you have to spend a few grand updating the EGR and oil cooler to make the 6.0 more reliable and claiming it sucks because of that, are the same ones spending thousands on their cummin/duramax with tunes, upgrades,,etc to make them more reliable..EVERY diesel can have issues but every deisel can also go 500K miles and more if maintained right and not abused

    Ive owned so many HD trucks over the years and NOT ONE has been "problem free", just like any vehicle ever made in history.
    Ive owned 2 6.0 powerstrokes (04 and an 06)
    F250 7.3L
    02 GMC 2500 Duramax
    02 chevy 2500 with the 8.1L gas (great truck)
    3 Dodge rams (all 1500s though)
    Several 1970's Ford F250s and 350s (these old Fords are just fantastic trucks and easy to work on)
    I enjoyed every one of them and cant say which I liked the best.
    They ALL needed parts replaced at some point but none ever had anything major go wrong.
    I own the 06 6.0 powerstroke right now and its doing great. My 04 I bought with 137K on it and sold it at 230K and the only thing I ever had to replace in that timeline was brake pads lol.

      i've had my 6.0L for 3 years almost 4 now. i gotta say compared to my friends who have any generation of cummins or Duramax. or even my 2018 F250 platinum 6.7 powerstroke. all these have been in the shop far far more than my 6.0L granted my 6.0L has had ALOT of work done to it and makes 700 hp and 1400 ft lbs of tourqe at the rear wheels. but regardless. actual repairs ive needed since i've had mine at 230k i replaced my wiring harness it was chaffed in one spot. and injectors
      my truck 3 years ago ate a injector tip and i put a injector in it. and magnets on oil pan. it just now after 3 years of driving it like that piston ring bits are finally showing up in low pressure oil releif.

    Just caught your video and enjoyed it. I have a 2006 F350 that same color, except I don't have a two tone and my interior is tan instead of grey. I had to almost immediately bulletproof it. The previous owner had it tuned and I personally believe that exacerbates the design flaws of the 6.0. In my case, the engine was and the increased pressure stretched the soft metal headbolts. That lifted the heads, causing blown head gaskets. Given that it would be a full teardown anyway, I elected to do a full bulletproofing job. It was ugly expensive, but I don't plan on ever getting rid of the truck, so it was worth it for me. What I've observed is that those that keep their trucks stock, tend to have less engine problems....as long as they keep up with the maintenance.
    I had to chuckle at your choices of camping abodes! They are my exact same choices. Arctic Fox 996 or a Nash 22ft.

    Nice truck. I have a 2006 F350 dually and love the truck. It has 90k on it and is in this process right now of getting a complete bulletproofing done. All the parts are from bulletproof diesel in Mesa AZ. It’s being done by an approved shop in Oshkosh WI. The truck has run flawlessly but we pull our 15k plus 5th wheel traveling. I wanted to eliminate all possible weak points of the 6L that I could. I think it’s worth the money over a new truck that costs 90k plus dollars and the new ones have their our set of troubles that the repair cost are even higher.

    I have an 04 F250 with 208k miles on it and still have my stock headbolts, hpop, and injectors. This has been the best truck I've ever owned. Use OEM parts and do your maintenance, run 5-40w Amsoil and Hotshot secret and you will have a reliable truck for years. I have owned this truck for 15 years now and would much rather put money into it than buy new.
    If you think parts for this truck are expensive, wait until you get rid of and buy a newer truck. This is a very cheap to repair compared to late model diesels and extremely easy to work on in comparison.

    It was stated that the truck was not "bullet proofed" yet it has been bullet proofed to some extent it simply was DIY. The STC fitting replaced, the stand pipe seals replaced. Then Coolant filter added which effectively OBE'd the need to get a 'Bullet Proof or Sinister Diesel' EGR. And the FICM was replaced. So basically, this truck experienced most of the common failures needing to be addressed except the oil cooler. "boosted to 29lbs" well the next thing would be head gaskets and head studs... In short, the 6.0 PSD is a great engine if mainatined. This video was no exception to what is common. Still a great truck, capable with its engine and I would recommend though it be "big" it is not worth the cost of a new lesser capable or equally capable vehicle. The value and worth of the truck remains. There are other videos that prove total cost of ownership of the 6.0 PSD over the 7.3, 6.4 and 6.7 is the lowest. One vide even dares to say it is lower still when compared to Cummins/Dodge of various years (not all) and GM/GMC.

    I watched this video before buying an 04 Lariat, same color, look rwd. I use mine to tow excessively. So the expense is worth it. 129k when bought and about 2 k a week. Owner said warranty work done nothing else. Everything was original, replaced alt, radiator, batteries, shocks, brakes and rotors. Only issue after 1.5 years, fuel pick up tube fell off. Buying a second one soon.

Cab off, head gaskets, turbo, all sensors, thermostat, water pump, oil cooler, high pressure oil pump, engine oil pump, new FICM, new injectors, egr delete, y-pipe, sct tune and new wiring harness. I have no plans of ever selling it as it is not my daily driver, and I sure like laying waste to sports cars...

      I keep hearing about EGR deletes on these trucks. In California, I don't think a person could get away with this. We have smog checks every two years and I have heard of DOT spot inspections with hefty penalties for any mods whatsoever. I own a 2003 with the last of the 7.3's. I am the original owner with only 37,000 original miles. I only pull a cabin cruiser boat with it, 6-7 k. I'll keep this truck until I'm too old to handle the boat anymore on my own.

    I have a 2005 F250 super cab 6.0L. I didn't know the issues with these until after I bought it. It's kinda funny the guy was 60 when he bought it new and sold it at 70 to me when I was 60 in 2015 with 82k miles for $13,500. Today I have 103k and all I've done is change the oil and bought new tires. Last summer I realized the importance of a good battery so after charging and trying to recover 4 year old batteries I finally bought two new ones. They never seem to get to 12.7 volts so I charge them every month or so. I hit a horse in Mexico so I bought two headlights. It crinkled up the fender and the hood but no internal damage and the truck still did and does run. Two months ago I had a black smoke blow out twice and I've had a white smoke blow out once but each time the truck kept running and eventually it regained power.and worked fine. Instead of taking it in I just kept driving it but I had issues with it not starting while doing errands a couple times but I would wait a few minutes and it finally did start. I new I should take it in but it always ran until one day while driving it slowed and it would not move. The accelerator pedal was dead but the truck was idling. I sat in it watching YT videos until my phone warned me it was going to die. I had been testing the pedal the whole time and I decided to give it one more try before turning it off and leaving it when it started moving so I went straight home. The next day it happened again at home. I turned it off and 3 hours later it started working. I've been watching more videos on the truck and decided to unplug the batteries to reset the computer and it runs just fine..I've been having stiction issues I think, my last oil change I went synthetic, after buying three 5 gallon buckets of Mobil when it was on rebate two years ago, one was 15-40 regular diesel oil. So I'm changing the oil and fuel filters today and adding some Hot Shot Secret.
    I looked at the 2019 Rangers for $30k but it only comes with the 2.3L. As of now if the injectors are okay I need to do a cooling system flush, transmission fluid change, brakes and rotors, fender, hood, canopy leaks and paint is coming off and drive train maintenance items. Of course the mechanic will see what else they can try to convince me I need but nothing leaks I only get 13 mpg but I was thinking many of those problems we heard about were from people trying to get better gas mileage so I'll live with 13.
    What is odd is the truck runs but all of a sudden it won't start or it won't let you drive it but nothing is wrong with it except for some sensors having an issue and that is unacceptable. I didn't even have the engine Iight come on except when it starts. It didn't even let me limp anywhere. I was thinking of calling a tow truck.
    So the lesson I learned is wait it out, don't be in a hurry let it sit and don't turn it off but before you run out of diesel maybe unhook the negative cable from each battery and clear the codes so carry a close end wrench that fits and put it in the door tray next to your flashlight.
    Thanks for the review of your truck and the honesty, you don't see that in used vehicle sales much.

    • @natewilson7664
      @natewilson7664 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely have a high pressure oil leak (this causes hot no starts) and with regards to the accelerator not responding, you either have a cracked egr cooler, extremely low fuel pressure, or injector stiction so bad that the spool valve is stuck closed or all of the above. Dont just wait around on that, it will cost you thousands, possibly 10s of thousands if you get coolant in the block and it starts to rust it. Also, use rotella t6 5w-40 as your oil with archoil. It's an additive that helps clear out injectors and oil build up in the system. It works, the science and plenty of testimonies are there to read.

      @timsteinkamp2245 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@natewilson7664 I took it to the shop and talked about different issues like you said. They came up with a bad egr, after replacement the turbo is okay and unable to reproduce no hot start. So far me neither. He replaced the alternator which I was hesitant because it showed okay but did replace. They did brakes, trans service, oil change. So far so good. He was sure the throttle was the alternator. I had an issue for last couple years when going downhill or even level with no throttle. The sporadic dim flicker of the battery light. Engaging the motor the light turned off. So maybe that was a warning on the alternator failing. No throttle problems anyway. Just checked my $2400 bill and don't see the coolant change. Hmm

    • @natewilson7664
      @natewilson7664 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timsteinkamp2245 hope that fixed the issue. You dont wanna leave a truck sitting with a bad egr cooler. They probably shouldve changed the oil cooler while they were in there but maybe it's alright. Is your coolant green? If its green I would flush it and buy elc red coolant or ford gold (red is the best). To flush it, drain it from the radiator, then close it up and put 3 gallons of water in it and run the truck for a little bit (5 to 10 mintues). Drain it again and put another 3 gallons of water in it and run the truck again for a little bit and drain that water. That should have flushed all of the old coolant out. You can do it a third time if you like. Or you can leave the plug open at the bottom of the radiator and with the truck running just put a running hose into the coolant reservoir and flush it all out. Then add your new coolant.

The only difference is that most truck reviews I have seen have been on the Lariat Model from 2005. The one I found is, basically a work truck....it has none of the “bells and whistles” that a lariat interior has..... and one added bonus is that it is in Central Florida, not in the mountains up north or plowin through snow and salt all year round..... idk, I’ve been checking around a lot of videos, any other opinion is always helpful. Thank you.... and thank you Amped79 for the upload on such a beautiful ride.

Do these trucks not have a lot of power.? I took a 6000 pound camper with my Ford expedition 5.4 V8. Never even get close to needing to floor the pedal climbing up steep grades here in the Appalachian mountains.

    I have a 2005 6.0 diesel as well. You are correct, they are not cheap to fix. But these trucks are beasts. When it is used for its intended purpose, meaning towing and continued loads they are unbeatable. Dodges have weak transmissions, GMC has weak fuel injection system. These modern powerful diesels had emissions to deal with and it seems all the manufacturers have struggled with this issue. But the fixes on these trucks make it a potential keeper. As these diesels age the new buyer will restore these diesels for continued use. And will continue to improve the reliability to get long life and good use from the 6 liter.

      My advice is, if you can't afford major repairs, don't buy it. Repairs, upkeep and upgrades on any out-of-warranty diesel is expensive! I purchased my 06' F-350 in Nov. 2015. It had 66K miles then, and now has 127K. It also had a new Amsoil and coolant by-pass filtration system already on it when I purchased it. In less than four years time, I have spent a total of over $26,500; $15,800 being repairs. The remainder $ was for upkeep like oil changes, filter changes, etc. and bulletproofing. I have not experienced anymore engine failure issues since bulletproofing it in Feb 2019 with ARP studs, EGR delete, larger turbo, SCT tune for towing, dummy plug upgrades, etc.. With that said, I do love my Ford... I'm a masochist - it keeps spanking my wallet.

    • @fahey6797
      @fahey6797 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Marco, I am the original owner of a 2003 with a 7.3 with only 37,000 original miles. I only use it when I need it for 4X4 with skiing, going to home depot for large items, and pulling a 6K cabin cruiser boat. All diesel trucks are a waste of money as daily drivers. My daily driver is a 2005 Toyota Camry with 270,000 miles that runs great and gets 30 mpg. I recently had to rebuild almost the entire front end on the Camry that had worn out, but then consider the mileage. Other than that, the F250 has given me more problems with 37,000 miles than has the Camry with 270,000 miles. If I didn't have the boat, I'd own a 1/2 ton truck with a gasoline engine. In fact, the boat is why I had to move up from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 for the brakes alone. I had a 1/2 ton 67 Chevy with 400 small block that pulled the boat just fine, but couldn't stop it. If you need to drive a diesel truck, you'd be much smarter to rent one from Enterprise from time to time, for these things are expensive to own: Tires, insurance, registration, parts, repairs ect……. Only buy one if you need it and use it only when you need it for what it can do would be my advice. For a daily driver, buy any Toyota and whatever you do, don't buy any Chrysler products, especially their cars.

    I owned a 2005 F350, identical to this one (same color, options and all). We ended up getting rid of it in 2017. Just waaaaaayyyy too many problems with the 6.0. In the end, Ford wants WAY too much for their parts (even simple things like calipers, rotors, seals, etc) and I couldn't justify the cost of ownership and repair. We sold it. I still REALLY like the way this generation (05-07) of trucks look and recognize their capabilities, but the 6.0, even after being completely bulletproofed, just still failed time and time again and would not stop consuming huge portions of my wallet. It never left me with any confidence that the problems would end. Too bad, really.

      @@1mandrywallarmytv144 lol. I love the defensive 6.0 owner attacks. They're quite funny. Yeah, let's just totally discount the thousands upon thousands of 6.0 owners who had lots of trouble with their trucks and assume their problems are all front lack of maintenance... just because you happened to have a couple that you believe are problem free.

      I've owned 2 and have never had the problems that you did, hahahahahahahaha. Dude learn to take care of the truck and what it needs before you go running at the mouth looking like a female who forgot to do her oil change ever! hahahaha

    Does your boost guage not work? Also you have been very lucky your egr hasn't clogged or your stock head Bolts haven't broken or head gasket failure. My 07 6.0 is fully bulletproofed with 290k miles with no compression problems and pulls like the day I bought it. These engines get a bad rap but if you put a little money into them they will go a half million miles or more. Mines paid off and I plan to see just exactly how many miles I can get out if it

    How hard was it to change the steering gear my truck has a bunch of play in the steering

    • @amped79
      @amped79  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did not do it myself. I paid the dealer to do it and the mechanic said it was a big pain as the steering lines we rusted bad. 5hrs it took him. The steering was like new afterwards.

      Do it yourself. It's easy, but my lines were not rusted. One of the lines were stuck but eventually came loose.

    Isnt that a edge tuner there located over the air vent?

    • @amped79
      @amped79  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an edge insight. Only a monitor, not a tuner.
