I would recommend a book by Gustavus Myers published on 1912 called "The History of Great American Fortunes". From the East India Company through the later part of the 19th century, he chronicles the rise of the Astor's, Vanderbilt's, JP Morgan, the Gould's, etc, using court records, state legislative records, personal letters and diaries that show how judicial bribes, kick-backs, buying of whole legislative bodies, extortion, forgery, intimidation and outright theft were the tactics used to amass these historical fortunes. His documentation is extraordinary.
It was for sure more of a 'wild west' back then in the times of the industrial revolution) Many talk about these people of being 'evil', but I think they first of all were a product of their time. The question is, are the business tycoons of today in general 'nicer people' than back in those days? I would say no. But states and the society of today are stronger, and better hold the tycoons 'in their ears'...hopefully, at least in the western world
