    I really appreciate your content. My parents both consider themselves Taoist and used to play a big roll in the temple. They invited me to join them a few times but I never learned any lessons (I just went there to eat). But I always wanted to know more about what my parents were getting out of Taoism. Today, the universe pushed me into your direction and it is uncanny how perfectly timed it was. Thanks for all your hard work and you should know that you make a difference.

    I am a school teacher and it pains me when I have to tell my students that China is our enemy. Because historically, both of our nations were always exchanging culture and science. But due to colonial manipulations and the short sightedness of our politicians, we are now 'enemies'. Their young minds fail to understand that this is a purely political statement, neither popular nor personal. Politics has done more harm to our respective cultures than the war we fought in 1962 and the subsequent skirmishes. Both China and India have so much to offer to each other and the world. Please continue sharing your knowledge with us, sifu. For it is people like you and not our bombs, planes, guns and missiles that can save the world.

      If it was up to the people, there would be no war, because people who want war are usually not the ones fighting in the front lines or the ones living in the warzones. I hope that democracy will be replaced with a system that is better, that is fair and lets people be free, feel free and stimulates wellbeing, not just for us in the west, but also in other parts of the world where people for example still die because of a lack of water or die from a fever. I hope some day people will find balance with eachother, that we can accept differences and share happiness instead of fight and take what we feel is ours.

    Step 1. Don't use an alarm clock. This disturbs your natural rhythms and cycles and causes mechanical disturbance in your function.
    The body knows when to wake up via subconscious mind. If you really have something important to wake up to, you will notice you wake up second before the alarm anyway.

    George, Thank-you for these videos and to Master Gu for his participation.
    This one was interesting because we just switched to Daylight Savings Time here in the States, which is not an issue in China. So now when do I get up? By the clock or the sun? As we move into the yang time of year when the daylight hours will soon exceed the nighttime hours, again, when do we we get up, by the clock or the sun?
    My gut feeling is that for those of us who are retired or otherwise not restricted to a tight schedule, following the rhythms of nature is a better way, especially since clocks are a human attempt to enforce an order on life with only a general nod in the direction of nature.
    Generally I like being up a little before when Master Gu recommends, around 4:30, so I can have time for meditation and morning prayer before sun up; I like to practice Taiji beginning in the twilight and ending just after dawn. The early morning is for me a wonderful peaceful time of day and I find the morning twilight beautiful.

      Interesting the way you said "the yang time of year". I never thought of it that way but it makes perfect sense, there is more day than night for those 6 months. So more yang than yin.

    • @dannykidwell4271
      @dannykidwell4271 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If time is an abstract concept and daylight savings does not apply to China, then I would say use the sun. Or set your alarm according to the time change.

    • @sperryunivac7791
      @sperryunivac7791 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just daylight savings time that is off, so is your standard time zone. True solar time is different at every point east-west, and varies over about a 40 minute range during the year. You can find the difference by averaging your sunrise and sunset times to find the clock times of true noon or midnight.

      @herr haller Things can still be sad to watch even though you're claiming to be a spiritual person, yeah? Or do we expect the world to turn into some mush and us not trying to tell good from bad, right from wrong? I sure hope I don't turn into an idiot of that kind, it world be horrible, I'd be horrible. Yeah, not according to the universe or whatever, but from a human standpoint you'd probably realize something could be improved.
      edit: nevermind. I've realized I'm not a fan of arguing on the internet, there's just misunderstandings on top of misunderstandings and there's always so much more to say, there's no context for anything...

You have the power to transform your comunity into sonething a little bit less gluttony and out of balance, you can be the change. Why would you change your enviroment for another, when you can transform yours and help others in the process?

True enlightenment comes from Both feast and fast. The sage only takes what is for him. And nothing is of interest to me unless it is shared. When you give you gain.

    All my life I have adopted without realising the Daoist principle of Give & Receive, but am now at a crossroads in many aspects of life where I am doubting this philosophy, having helped not expecting a return with friend's in life, I look around few of these friends are still there, were they ever friends ?? of cause not.
    Recently I was asked to do some work on a friends flat, over 3 weekends, i worked hard, it in total cost me a lot of money in transport, having to put my dog in kennels because she was not welcome, a few tools that need replacing due to use, while it was great to get to know a French family, to help someone get closer to moving into her flat.
    For the first time, i just feel taken advantage of and used for my skills.
    Yes i gained by expirence, but I have another friendship were if I don't make contact then they drift away, which is what will happen again.
    So while I believe in Give & Receive, will always try to help people, but I am frustrated by the one way feeling I now have and distrust recent events have left me with.....
    The path of life I am finding is a lonely, tough path I feel and out of balance.

      It sounds like you are dissatisfied due to the lack of appreciation or reciprocity from those you help or share goodwill with. I’ve been there many times myself. In the future, if you CHOOSE to help someone in the future, then do what YOU choose but have no expectations in return. Otherwise you will always be in a state of angst and unhappiness because you have NO CONTROL over the actions (or inaction) of others, but YOU DO HAVE CONTROL over how you react to the action (or inaction) of others. So, it is your choice to be upset, sad, happy, or indifferent about the things that you (we) have no control over. So how do you CHOOSE be with the rest of your life? To the best of my ability, I choose happiness. ☝️🥴☯️

    • @alanblair8933
      @alanblair8933 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EnlightenedRogue24 Yes you are right, I choose to help and enjoyed helping, I am questioning myself, as I have by helping not achieved things that would have benefitted my situation.
      Life events have created an avalanche of thoughts, where I am now questioning friends honesty, life, etc. for example; if it's me keeping another friendship a live, is it one way, also many other questions.
      I am not sad or frustrated, everyone is different, we are all unique, my eyes are more a tune to the ways of people, than before.
      I will carry on helping people, just not at the cost of my objectives if that is of greater importance.
      Ultimately we all want to be happy, content with life, it's finding the right balance.

    Sorry but.. some of what you say is wrong. A pot belly can store a LOT of qi... Everything you say is not strictly true.. Also remember you are teaching EVERYONE on the internet Sacred and secret arts..
    True masters rarely teach like this.. if ever.. they teach through transmissions and remote monitoring to select their student. The student must be Noble and of good Honor.

    well this taoist neglects to consider the fact not every ones circadian rythm is in align with waking up at 5 to 7 am, in fact if you try and go against your circadian rythm you throw off your actual rythm and metabolism. thusly would it not be better to apply the excercises when you naturally and appropietly wake up. im sure that the hours of day that align with organs and what not vary with each dicipline of taoism. yes you can possibly change and re-tune your rythm but that takes time and study of oneself, this should have been taken into consideration when he began with the opening statement of when you should get up. Also people have slave jobs they work at so there is also scheduling to consider. im not knocking down the toaist im just pointing out things that are obvious to me. please review and asses my statement thank you G.T.

    This has nothing to do with authentic Taoism. It’s just commonly accepted platitudes. This is especially clear in the part about nutrition, old taoists advised „Bigu“, abstaining from grains, not a „balanced“ diet with enough fiber, that’s mainstream today‘s advice as all the other content of this extraordinary shallow video. I’m a Tai Chi Chuan teacher by the way with a lifelong interest in Taoism.

      Talking from the same experience... i realized that the idea of it being "normal" to wake at 6 and sleep at 9 may be what's best for us to live in balance but at the same time there is no law to how each person should live, it has its benefits, but if you live the other way round then embrace that and stop telling yourself you're doing something wrong because of a social norm, i wake at 10-11 and equally sleep at 1-2... would i feel better in a 6-9, probably, but at this "present moment" that's not the case and so i stop judging myself and embrace how i am at this moment... be at peace with yourself and let the change happen when you're ready, or you can try force it and end up frustrated and angry because the more you force the worse it gets, just my own experience.

    To have recurrent desire is not necessarily wanton. We are trained into this by our biology. To quench our thirst doesn't mean that's the end of it. We'll soon be thirsty again. We know that, so I think it is fear or anxiety that we may not be able to satisfy thirst or hunger in future that drives us to over consume, over accumulate.

  • @Dowlphin

    People overeat as a coping strategy, BTW. Working on the symptom might make things worse. Identifying the cause and resolving that is much better. But the fear structures in society thrive on the symptoms. -- Discipline is good, but a perceived need to exercise discipline also means there is something doing the prompting. Looking at that can enlighten. That enlightenment can empower or weaken. -- Is it better to sometimes not look? ... Better for who? For what? For how long? -- Personal strategies. They carry responsibility. Ultimately nothing matters but what we choose to matter.
    8:10 Here's a head fryer (i.e. a TED Talks buster): If you have been too generous, then being less generous will restore personal balance (=health). ;-) - I'd have some comments on the give-receive idea of generosity, but that would become an essay, and I'm not feeling generous, ha-ha. - Let's just say while the Dao De Jing is a great tool for continuously drawing new insights from it, it is also a great tool for continuously questioning it. Same rules apply, whether it is a book or anything else in life. It is all within. The Dao De Jing could be seen as a part of life wrapped in a packaging that reads "LOOK AT ME! THIS IS GREAT STUFF!" (i.e. life). If people are attracted by it, they can learn how to look at life. ... If they open the book and see nothing but a trollface, they might have gotten their money's worth, too. - BTW, I can HIGHLY recommend this spiritual teaching video about the topic: th-cam.com/video/DLzxrzFCyOs/w-d-xo.html

    New subscriber. Thank you so much for this channel. I've been intrigued by Taoism, especially philosophical Daoism, ever since I read the Dao De Jing for the first time in high school, but its not exactly the easiest philosophy to get your head around, even if it is in some ways ridiculously simple. Was wondering what your favorite translation of the Dao De Jing was/which one Master Gu considered "most accurate" whatever that might mean. Also, any recommendations for good books about Daoism?

      Allen Morgan I think that is the beauty of the word Master Gu said was for “generous”. There is both give and receive in the same word. I think this means you should not give unless you expect to receive. Not giving in favors like, “you scratch my back and I scratch yours.” I think it means you only give to those who would appreciate it and be thankful for it. Jesus has a saying that you shouldn’t cast your pearls before swine. They will turn and trample you. Be cautious who you give yourself to.

      If you toss compliments around freely, people will waste your time trying to impress you.
      If you give things too much value, you're going to get ripped off.
      If you try to please people, you'll just make them pissed.
      Read less
      I.e. your generosity comes from a place of fear, and fearful action is weakness and thus makes unattractive.

      @Andrew Terry - It's the issue I have with that give-receive definition, because tit-for-tat based on unspoken arrangements is not generosity, but just a form of doing business and selfishly-motivated in a smart way and as such contains a lot of bullshit potential. It also clashes with another dictate which is to give gifts without expecting anything in return.
      The Dao De Jing must not be read like fortune cookies. Study it like you study life itself.

      the greatest gift of generosity is to give out of joy and learn to give altruistically. also learning to truly enjoy gifts given to you. whether appreciating a generous offer of water or a sincere act of kindness. one of the greatest gifts is to learn to communicate in such a way where others do not feel belittled in speech and how to ask for your needs in a gentle way that is not a demand. and also knowing how to listen to others needs even if they dont know how to go about it. some people have a need but tragically they way they communicate is a tragic suicide of the word PLEASE. this video is a gift of learning to communicate and listen beyond yelling. th-cam.com/video/NH1MKAdxUpQ/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/l2KkOPZfn_Y/w-d-xo.html
