Thank you for the nice vedio. When going down Mt Washington, vehicles traveling down will need to be on the lowest gear a lot of times to reduce the brake friction heat, causing it from engaging, and vehicles go out of control. Also, vehicles traveling down must yield for vehicles traveling up the mountain..
I've been up and down that mountain on a bike 5 times! It's an impressive, fun, and beautiful ride. I only go on weekdays (Mon-Wed is best cause way fewer cars!) I like to go in late July or Early August so it is reasonably warm at the top. You should always have a sweatshirt/coat and raincoat in your saddlebags; because conditions can change quickly, and weather reporting in New England is all coin-tosses. I think it would be scarier in a car, because on a bike you know exactly where the edge of the road is. Once you get above the tree line, it is amazing! Great video!
I did this during Covid. It was Summer at the base and felt like Winter at the top. The ride was pretty easy there was only a short section of unpaved road. I made it up in about 15 min or less. Going down requires a bit more focus but was fine other than some slow cars in front of me.
So cute… I was warned about twisty and narrow roads and no guard rails… I was waiting for things to get sketchy while riding through the fog and eventually was surprised by the summit… On the way down it was clear sight with beautiful views. Maybe growing up riding in the European mountains sets a different baseline 🏔️
This was my first high altitude, narrow mountain road without a guard rail. I was much more relaxed going down. I'm looking forward to going again next year
When I rode up Mt. Washington a few years ago heavy fog set in near the top.....very heavy fog and it was a dangerous situation as my glasses , windshield, and helmut shield all fogged up.
Did it once. Video doesn't capture the shear drop offs you see in person. I actually found the ride down had a higher pucker factor since you had a better view of how far you will fall! The wind doesn't help. Never thought heights bothered me much, but this was more "interesting" then I thought. Glad a did it, not sure, but I may be one and done...
If you think this ride/drive is not for you, they offer a tour van ride up and down. It will allow you to really enjoy the scenery. It is an pretyy good option
I enjoyed the ride. I plan to do it again next year during bike week. I am also planning to ride to Colorado. This was my first time riding a high altitude, narrow road w/o guard rails.
Cue, it's amazing to see this trip up Mt. Washington from the rider's perspective. I have not been there yet, but I plan to ride up in the near future. Always enjoy watching your videos. Sir, keep on doing what you do!
I admit, I was nervous....but now that I've done it, I'm looking forward to doing it again next year during Laconia Bike Week. It's a fun ride. My goal with this video was to show the entire road so that you know what to expect. It's not a technical ride.....just high elevation with AMAZING views. On the way up, focus on the road...don't fixate on scenery....lest you ride over the edge! On the way down, stay in first gear and DO NOT pull in the clutch.
@@RidingandWrenching Wife and I did Mt. W. some years back, each on our own bikes. My real point for this comment though is that you must try Hurricane Mountain Road out of North Conway heading east towards Chatham. I found it scarier than the auto road.

Absolutely love that ride! I've been so busy this summer I've only been able to make it up once so far. I am definitely getting back up there before the season is over. Great video, thanks for posting it. Keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤🏍 Randy
I also thought that part was hilarious!! 😂 Hats off to him for making it as far as he did. At least he got his sticker. I know I would have parked my bike at the bottom and used the Cog railway to reach the summit. I would have been on "pins and needles " the entire ride up the mountain.
We rode up in a rainy mist and it was a little scary. At one point a tour bus stopped in front of us, we stopped and slid backwards with the front brake on, had to hit the rear brake to stop sliding backwards. Got to the top and could see nothing due to the fog. Great ride though but unnerving in the rain on a loaded bagger. I say go for it if you get a chance and I hope you have a nice day to ride Mt. @@RidingandWrenching Hey CUE it’s me again. In mid July 2012 I did a solo run from Toronto Ontario Canada to Fairplay CO for the annual “Colorado Ladies Day Run” I took the Ultra again this time with 150K miles on it. I won first prize for the longest distance travelled at 1800 miles. I had a great time and met some great people. I got the elevation sickness though because I live at 300 ft above sea level and Fairplay was 10,000 ft. I felt a pain in my chest and lungs like a heart attack. I bought 3 of those oxygen puffers and the next day I was ok. I had 2 weeks vacation so I went to the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton CO. The ride was fabulous even though there were no guardrails and 600ft drops, I was ok even though I’m not crazy about heights. If you go from north up in Ouray to south down in Silverton (9300ft) you’ll have less sheer drop off with no guardrails. Trust me it was nowhere near as crazy as Mt Washington. But I’ll tell you what is…. Black Canyon of the Gunneson CO, it’s on the way to the Million$ hwy. It’s got 16 degree grades, gravel rd and some switchbacks and it’s really cold at the bottom because the canyon is narrow and completely shaded between the black granite. On the way back up I had to stand up because I couldn’t see over my windshield. It’s WORSE than Mt Washington if you want a challenge. I had to lie down in the grass when I got to the top. 😵💫 After I left Silverton I took the highway to Durango CO and it was just beautiful. Stayed at historic hotels the Grand Imperial in Silverton and the Strater Hotel in Durango. Best trip of my life! Then I left and hi tailed to Utah. I headed to a place in Mexican Hat UT that has a rd called the Moky Dugway. Google it. Then I took off for the Arches State Park. Most beautiful place I’d ever been to on a motorcycle. I arrived 1.5 hr before dusk camped there and left at dawn. RESERVE IT. You won’t regret it. 😊

I rode up Mt. Washington about 30 years ago. Back then the top half was dirt. Riding down was wild. There is a long ramp with a left turn at the bottom. From this are you see ski resorts at lower elevation. It looks like the road stops and will launch you into the sky.
That was a lot of fun. Years ago I drove my car to the top and loved it. It must be so much fun riding to the top with a group of friends. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Great video, I've done it a few times and it is intense. Only things I can add are to be prepared for at least a 30 deg temperature drop at the top. I bring cold-weather gear with me just in case. Second, make sure the bike is up for it. One of my friends had old brake and clutch fluid and he lost his clutch at the summit because the water bubbles in the clutch fluid froze. We turned the clutch side of the bike into the sun and that helped to warm it up.
Wow...amazing views !! Riding a motorcycle up there is probably the best way to experience it. I wouldn't want to try this at night...that's for sure. 😁 ... cool video.
Thank you for the video. Never did Mt. Washington; but went by it on my way back from Nova Scotia. I have a friend who is a very avid motorcyclist (rode all over the U.S.; parts of Canada and up into Alaska) and he said some parts of that road made him a little uneasy.
When I to9k this ride it was early June and there was still snow banks in the parking lot. People were snow boarding at Tuckermans Ravien. The best view are from the top,and riding down. Above the treeline on a nice day I ou can see forever.
I lived in Seattle, Washington for 8 years. My favorite ride around there was Mt. Rainier, two routes. Paradise and Sunrise. Both went above 6,200 ft. The grades were not as steep as Mt. Washington but longer distance. 1986 Honda GL1200 GoldWing. Nice roads with few technical points. I could transverse at approximately 30mph. Descending 2nd or 3rd gear and just listening to the quiet wind going thru helmet. Awesome views across the Cascade Mountains. Thank you for your ride
Mt. Mitchell off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC is taller than Mt. Washington (6684'), and is more sceenic. Also a more pleasant ride, and FREE. Not as windy though for sure. Love the videos.
Great video, thanks for sharing! I live in NH, some FYI: the upper portion of the road at one time was not paved. There is a marker off the road close to the top where a hiker or hikers didn't make it to the top because of bad weather that came in, they didn't realize how close they were to safety and they lost their lives at that point. You can see the summit just above where they were at, so they were so close but yet so far.
I live just outside of Laconia and ride up north almost every weekend that the weather cooperates. There is some great roads that you have to hit while in the area. I highly recommend Hurricane Mountain Rd., and Bear Notch Rd.

Thanks for sharing. It didn't look too bad to me. Not as many hairpin turns compared to the road up Pikes Peak in Colorado, but what makes that road even more challenging is the altitude -- almost twice tat of Mt. Washington. Even so, not too scary of a road as long as you have the right type of bike and skill/attitude.
The last time I rode up there was in 1993.... went up 3 years ago and the Road was closed due to a Subaru Road race to the top... I need to get up there again. Great Video

Made it to the top, but experienced anxiety watching this video, I don't think I could ride it again. The camera doesn't do justice to how steep the road actually is.
Did the climb in 2016 (remember the dirt gravel section that was WET). If you get out to Colorado there is Pikes Peak (easier paved road) and the real adrenalin rush is Mt Evans (200 feet higher than Pikes Peak and a hell of a lot scarier because of its narrowness and tight switchbacks) Being afraid of heights lets you enjoy talking about it more.

Our gold wing chapter rode up some time in mid 80s. It was a blistering 95F at the base and around 40F at summit. Glad we had helmets to keep our heads warm, tourists in cars weren’t so lucky. They’d get out of their cars wearing shorts and Tees and thought they were gonna die. At least us bikers were fully dressed. The wind was so strong that we had a heck of a time getting the bikes onto their sidestands the way we had parked. 700 lb bike and the wind is keeping it from leaning left onto the stand. Not the scariest, curviest, tallest road to a summit, but for sure one of the wildest weather changes I’ve ever experienced in a few short miles.
I just completed this ride in June of this year while attending the Laconia rally. It was on my bucket list for a while and I'm so glad I did it. It was a little hairy, but it was definitely worth the effort. The ride up and back from Wolfeboro New Hampshire where I was staying was also a joy. One of the best parts was, that I had just had a cam and exhaust installed on the bike at the rally, so that the sound of the engine braking on the way down was music to my ears.😊
In 2001, I bought my brand new Ultra and took it to New Hampshire from Ontario Canada for a vacation in Aug 2002. Went up Mt Washington to help me overcome my fear of heights. Well! After about mile 2 the pavement turned to gravel. No problem, I thought, I live on a gravel road. But those last few hairpins with 10 degree grades had me alternating between praying and cursing! And I’m a Christian! I’d be leaning and turning sharply to go up, and the tour bus van would be coming down and hogging the centre of the road! I narrowly missed hitting their mirror! Made it to the top but it was around 4pm on Aug 2nd and it started to snow! Light flakes though. Bring some warm clothes and gloves! It’s about 6300 ft elevation. Two guys came up with Quebec plates, one on a FatBoy the other on a LowRider. I offered to trade the guy on the LowRider even up for my big cow of an Ultra…..😮😅 We stayed for a little while so we could see the Steam powered Cog train. What a beauty! It came time to go down OH BOY! I practically screamed all the way! I rode my brakes a little and just wanted to keep going to get it over with but by the time I reached the second pull over stop, I had about 1/8 of an inch of brake lever pull left and very little brakes! Fortunately I came to a stop upright. I stopped at every pullover after that to cool my brakes until we got to the paved rd again. So folks if you ride your brakes they have to cool off or you’ll have none! So pullover on those pull offs! When I got to the bottom we pulled over and I got off my bike and kissed the ground. My husband took a picture of me doing it and we still laugh about it to this day. I got the bumper sticker to prove it and proudly displayed it on the back of my tourpak lid. God was looking after me that day and Jesus is my passenger, along with the Holy Spirit, but I don’t think I’ll go back up Mt Washington because I’m still afraid of heights. Except maybe on that Cog train. 🚂 I said maybe…..😂❤
@@RidingandWrenching Yeah! And it wasn’t that nice pea gravel, it was more like that 4 inch rubble because the rain wouldn’t wash it away! I don’t remember the road being that wide, I think they must have changed the original route. I laughed at your friend saying “who’s idea was this?” 😂🤣 I feel his pain!🤪😝
I bet it was! I was a little apprehensive about the gravel part of the roads (until I heard it was completely paved). The parking lots are still gravel, but I was ok with that!
Well explained and well advised Sir. Thank you! We went up Whiteface Mtn once at Lake Placid and talk about brake smoke..lol. Cars were coming down with smoke pouring out of both of their front wheel wells that you couldn’t even see through…and the smell? It was awful.
You could definitely smell brakes! Fortunately, they have pull offs so the cars can cool their brakes. Seems like there are alot of people who don't know how to use engine braking on an automatic transmission.
cool video reminds me of riding out the east side of yellowstone heading to cody in parts of video towards the top seeing the dropoff and other mountains. parts of brpwy are the same way as well as the cherohala skyway. thanks though for the ride showing the road and ride up was wondering why so many say its somewhat a rough ride..didn't look bad at all.. keep on riding.
Now that I have done it, I will say it isn't that bad. The steep drop off can be intimidating...especially when a large vehicle is coming down the mountain forcing the rider to stay in their lane. My goal was to keep my eyes on the road and not focus on the scenery (that is what the pull offs are for)
Thank you for your advice. I just got back it was a great and scary ride. It is really high. I just looked in front of me like you said, I am not big on heights. 1st gear 99%of the way up and down. Thanks again.
Lots of roads are. Mt. Washington is pretty tame. I rode many roads in the Alps that are far worse than any road in the US. I rode the Moki Dugway earlier this year as I heard that was pretty intense and it ended up being pretty tame.
Great video Cue! That might not been a technically challenging ride but definitely requirs a ton of intestinal fortitude! Just like TTOTD you slayed it! Ride safe ride often and keep motovlogging. Glen
I've done this 4 or 5 times in a car, twice on a motorcycle and one time on an ATV. The stairway (not pictured) from lower summit lot to upper will tell you exactly what kind of shape you're in and demonstrate what altitude does to breathing.
I'll give you two scariest rides that will knock you socks off. In Bend, Oregon there is a cinder round cone mountain with road winding around mt to the top. Where a brass plate with arrows directing too all the mountains visible. Very impressive, but scarey on a bike. Other is also a mountain with road winding to its top. South of Bend is LaPine, Oregon, East is a volcanic mountain that blew up an made two lakes, Pauline Lake an East Lake. The Peck between lakes is Paulina Butte. This will give you the rush of getting to top by motorcycle an rush getting down. You can see 5 States from top. My dad a i guided Kirk Douglas an family on a days fishing trip to show how to catch big German Brown and rainbow trout on Paulina Lake. Bonus scare: Oakland Bay bridge just scared my ex. Spitless! Astoria bridge is a real rush too!
Yes. Just did Beartooth Pass two weeks ago during the Sturgis Rally! Oh Boy! And I have a great fear of heights but I needed to conquer it for the ride. 11K+ altitude at the summit! I actually had trouble breathing when I got off the bike to take in the view!
It was an awesome ride! I plan to do it again next year during Laconia Bike Week. I have never been, but now that I know how awesome the riding is in New Hampshire, I can't wait to go back
I might put that on my list of rides next season. Although, if I can get my knees straight, I'd like to hike to the top first. Hiking is much more dangerous on that mountain, but when you hike places like that, it is a thrill and a feeling of accomplishment when you're standing at the top, your legs feeling like spaghetti noodles that are burning, and your heart racing. You look down at the valley below, and think, "WOW" that was totally worth the work". That's what I love about hiking/climbing the Appalachians. In fact, the end of the Appalachian trail is at Mt. Washington, or the beginning, depending if you are heading south instead of north. Another bucket list of mine, is a complete AT thru-hike starting in Georgia all the way to Mt. Washington.
Epic views! Our kind of ride for sure. We ride without guard rails all the time, not trying to be a smart azz but I guess, we are used to it. Haha, that wind was kicking butt. Did you get the SoCal list I sent?

Maybe growing up riding in the European mountains sets a different baseline 🏔️
This was my first high altitude, narrow mountain road without a guard rail. I was much more relaxed going down. I'm looking forward to going again next year
When I rode up Mt. Washington a few years ago heavy fog set in near the top.....very heavy fog and it was a dangerous situation as my glasses , windshield, and helmut shield all fogged up.
@@edwinjames6283 wow! We had a little fog, but it wasn't too bad. We didn't get the great views that I've heard about
Been up twice on a bike, did it a month ago 2up on my 99 Valkyrie interstate.

Agreed! The video doesn't do it justice.
Not scary...unless you're riding in knucklehead speed. Beautiful experience.
It won't be scary the next time I do it. This was my first time riding a high altitude, narrow mountain road without a guard rail. The ride down was much more relaxing too
Absolutely love that ride! I've been so busy this summer I've only
been able to make it up once so far. I am definitely getting back up

Yup, that’s added to my bucket list! “Whose idea was this” 😂😂 That looks like a great ride brother!
I had to edit out the rest! That was the nice part!

In mid July 2012 I did a solo run from Toronto Ontario Canada to Fairplay CO for the annual “Colorado Ladies Day Run”
I took the Ultra again this time with 150K miles on it.
After I left Silverton I took the highway to Durango CO and it was just beautiful.

@@robertschroder4797 wow! What was the road like 47 years ago?
Great video, I've done it a few times and it is intense. Only things I can add are to be prepared for at least a 30 deg temperature drop at the top. I bring cold-weather gear with me just in case. Second, make sure the bike is up for it. One of my friends had old brake and clutch fluid and he lost his clutch at the summit because the water bubbles in the clutch fluid froze. We turned the clutch side of the bike into the sun and that helped to warm it up.
I was prepared for a big temperature change. But it was fairly mild the day I went.

Thanks for sharing. It didn't look too bad to me.

Made that ride on my Ultra several years ago. The top 3 miles were still gravel then. Was a really interesting and challenging ride then.
Wow! I couldn't imagine making that ride on a gravel road
Wow! I heard that part of the road was gravel for many years. It was fully paved on my trip. Gravel would have scared the crap out of me!

I am sooo glad that I made that ride. I still haven't been to Laconia bike week, but I hope to go next year. I will ride Mt Washington again
I offered to trade the guy on the LowRider even up for my big cow of an Ultra…..😮😅
We stayed for a little while so we could see the Steam powered Cog train.
I said maybe…..😂❤
Wow!!! I was wondering where the gravel sections of the road were. It is completely paved now.
@@RidingandWrenching Yeah! And it wasn’t that nice pea gravel, it was more like that 4 inch rubble because the rain wouldn’t wash it away! @@janisblack2183 oh yea....he was freaking out! I don't know if I would have done it on gravel. That sounds terrifying!
The only month it hasn’t snowed is in August.
On the way down were you in gear for engine braking, or just riding your poor brakes? 😮
I'm glad they finished paving it. When I rode Mt. Washington in 2019, the last 1/2 mile was on gravel. And I was on a Gold Wing. A bit nerve-wracking.
My goal was to keep my eyes on the road and not focus on the scenery (that is what the pull offs are for)
There's an anual bike race to the top of Mount Washtong. I think the record climb is around 46 minutes

I've done this 4 or 5 times in a car, twice on a motorcycle and one time on an ATV. The stairway (not pictured) from lower summit lot to upper will tell you exactly what kind of shape you're in and demonstrate what altitude does to breathing.
You are 100% correct. I was DYING by the time I got to the top of that stairway! I should have filmed that but didn't think about.

The cog is a great way to experience the mountain as well.
Washington.
I don't know if my knees and bum feet could handle a hike like that.
