Hello. I'm from Mexico, and I'm using a translator, I hope he does his best job. It was a wonderful video that takes us back to our youth. It seems incredible to me that even after so many years, you remember those scenes that you liked from certain games. I think you're right that CAPCOM owed a lot to the Sega Genesis players, but even so, Genesis was the best that ever existed. I send you greetings from Mexico City.
It's rejuvenating to see a fellow middle aged man being that excited by good ol' SEGA pixel wizardry. The devs of this era were nothing short of hacker magicians, squeezing every last hertz out of the hardware in such creative ways. I'm replaying the games I used to own in the 90s on OLED Steam Deck with RetroAchievements on and it's so much fun. 16-bit games still hit different, aged like fine wine.
29:43 “If looks & sounds could kill, none of us would’ve ever finished this game.” Y’all, I know we admire Sega Lord X for his gaming knowledge and Sega expertise usually, but can we take a second to recognize what great WRITING his videos have sometimes? And how it’s only gotten better over time?? Man, it’s always so great to not only stay with a channel as it takes off, but to see the creator’s craft only ever get better, across the board.
When you find out that the reason you’re getting views is because of sega lord x videos being mixed with your recommended. Man I’m happy. Been watching you for years lol
Ice Cap Zone was so iconic that I was genuinely disappointed that the second Sonic movie missed the opportunity to license the actual "Hard Times" by The Jetzons to use for the snowboarding escape sequence.
Ice Cap is atmospheric as hell. I love all the Sonic 1 stages too, there's just something about them that has a lot of mystique. Springyard, Labyrinth (aesthetics mostly) and Star Light all in a row is legendary. And World of Illusion, the swimming stage, with the relaxed and ethereal theme and all the bright colors was awesome
Love it! Nice break between Metropolis and Wing Fortress. I mean I’m so good at Sonic 2 I don’t need the break lol, but still lol. Always really enjoyed Sky Chase Zone.
The beginning of Streets of Rage with the prologue/story scrolling on screen, the twilight city skyline in the background and _that_ moody, halftime hiphop beat wasn't topped for "mood setting" until PS1 with games like Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Resident Evil Stands as one of *the* best moments on the system imo ❤
The mood and atmosphere-setting within the original Streets of Rage is legendary. For me, if we're talking entries to the medium on the '90s, Super Metroid, Snatcher, and Super Castlevania IV are the only games that come close pre-PS1 out of the games that I played.
Gunstar Heroes thrilling underground mines followed by the jaw-dropping, transformer themed boss fight and then the mind-bending Dice Palace stage. Finally, the boss rush on the moon base where they're all gathered together to hopelessly spectate on you crushing them one by one, until it culminates in a showdown with Golden Silver. Rocket Knight Adventures - every stage feels original and distinguished from one another, but the flying section & maze-like structure of stage 5 remain the most memorable to me. Dynamite Headdy's amusing practice area, plus Acts 1 to 3 are all superb. Wiz 'n Liz snow land level music fits the game art & stage design like a glove.
Echo the Dolphin blew me away as a kid. I was never able to get too far in the actual game but I didn't care much. I would load up the game and swim around the first area every now and then and just marvel at the awesome graphics. Definitely one of my favorite Genesis stages!
I didn't get very far in Ecco either as a kid, but I totally agree that the graphics and music created an atmosphere that was unforgettable. Even just aimlessly swimming around was pretty fun and one of the most unique game experiences for its time.
I'm going to submit a bit of a rarer one, which isn't my personal favorite of all time or anything, but is a really cool stage from an overlooked classic: the first stage from Mick & Mack Global Gladiators. Very memorable in it's visual presentation and the music is amazing too. But there are so many that are worth highlighting that I'd be an endless task to try naming all of them.
I think I like the Tower of Puppet one a bit more simply because of the visual effects and the awesome background music, I occasionally hum it while at work. :)
Dynamite Headdy has a lot of neat levels! The soundtrack was amazing the whole way through, too! I think Toys in the Hood was one of the first levels? Yeah, it really sets the tone of this bizarre adventure and gets you accustomed to the different head power-ups. Towering Internal was really great, too. The graphical effect of the rotating tower and Spinderella was quite impressive. Treasure always packed their games with lots of mini-bosses/bosses and pushed the graphical limitations of the systems!
Some of my favourites are: Childam (Wonder Boy In Monster World) - everything about it is cozy and calming. The music is soothing, the colours are soft and inviting. Just a thoroughly lovely place to be. King Nole's Labyrinth (Landstalker) - Has probably my favourite music in the game, I kind of wish every dungeon used it, since it's so mysterious and forboding. I live the design of it too, feels like a lost Mayan temple or something. Stage 1 (Streets of Rage 2) - The second I heard "Go Straight" for the first time, i was in love with this game and the series as a whole. It helps that it's set up tovdisplay all of SOR2's best qualities; the combos, the more detailed sprites, the grimy atmosphere. Just an incredible start to the game. Level 2 (Splatterhouse 3) - the level i have spent the most time trying to get the good ending on (without success so far). Just superb design and layout to maximise tension and atmosphere. I'll get that good ending!
Sonic 3’s Ice Cap Zone theme was taken from The Jetzons’ unreleased song “Hard Times” from 1982. It’s pretty well-known, but thought some people may not know and would be interested. 🤙
Thanks for this. I knew there was some sort of controversy around the original music and it was changed for later releases, but I had it crossed in my head that it had to do with the Michael Jackson collaboration that fell through.
Great list! I still remember many of those stages! I'd be interested to see your favorite levels from NES, SNES, TurboGrafx 16/PC-Engine, Saturn and any other consoles. I'm curious if you might even do a _least_ favorite stages on the Genesis? There are so many great stages on the Genesis, but what about some of the stinkers you dread playing in some of your favorite games? Some of my personal favorites on the Genesis include: *Sonic 1's Starlight Zone* I think this is the only zone in the latter half of the game I enjoy. The music and visuals are just so mesmerizing. Of course, it does have some annoying elements like the see-saws, bomb enemies and fans. *Sonic 2's Emerald Hill* A great introductory stage that is beautiful, fast, and fun! It has some great graphical effects and really sets the tone for the game. The music is excellent as well as is all of Sonic 2's soundtrack. *Rocket Knight Adventures' Stage 3* The first part in the crystal cave with the reflected lava effect is really cool! It then goes into a tricky underwater section and ends in some fast-paced run through underground lava caves. The end boss was pretty solid, too. There are a lot of good stages in this game, though. *Ristar's Planet Sonata* The music alone is why I love this stage. In the first part, you're delivering metronomes to captured bird creatures and each time you deliver a metronome, a new part to the background music is added. The second part has you exploring a colorful level made of instruments. Again, this game has a lot of good levels to choose from. *Vectorman's Absolute Zero* There are plenty of more impressive levels in this game, but I really like this one due to its atmosphere. You're in an underwater trench trying to climb your way out to the surface. It is relatively short, but you have to play patiently or you'll be knocked back to the bottom of the level. *Earthworm Jim's What the Heck* Jim literally goes to Hell! He has to fight through demons and lawyers! The atmosphere great and I love the music (a rendition of Night on Bald Mountain). It also has a memorable boss fight against Evil the Cat where you temporarily lose your super suit in the first part, but gain it back in the second to take out Evil's nine lives! Again, both Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 have some really memorable levels!
I’m very much a “Japanese exploration-based Sonic > America flashy speed-based Sonic” kind of fan, so I think a lot of the stages in Sonic CD are near masterpieces!
@@Ian-Omega That's actually incorrect. Sonic 1 and Sonic CD were made under Sega of Japan, while Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 were made under Sega of America in California. It's yet another example of the rift between Sega of Japan and Sega of America and it's why Sonic CD is much more similar to Sonic 1 than it is to Sonic 2 or Sonic 3
I was watching this without any prior knowledge thinking what would be my favourite stage in my favourite game Ranger X, and I thought of the jungle stage. Shortly after I was very pleasantly surprised that not only did you feature Ranger X but you also echoed my same thoughts re: jungle stage. I would add that the music in that stage is very memorable as well in combination with everything going. You have great taste!
Definitely love to see more like this. Level/Stage-specific videos are awesome when they're well done. I'll never forget the Leaning Tower stage in Castlevania: Bloodlines, my friend had nightmares about it and woke his parents up and they wouldn't let him play it anymore, so he only played it at my house but cautiously.
Man, so many stages stick out as favorites in my mind on the Genesis. The first level of Comix Zone is great. Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2 with that music and blistering fast gameplay. Vectorman had some killer levels, I thought. The very last stage in Castlevania Bloodlines has some of the best music of the entire series.
Asteroid M in X-men for genesis. First time I made it to this level without the internet felt crazy. Reset the genesis because I thought I missed something in the mojo level but broke the 4th wall. Playing X-men for so long and finally seeing a new level was very special
"I couldn't help but smile" I believe that is simply, all encompassing because sometimes there just aren't words for basements, pizza rolls...and...nachos with video games.
Yes, PLEASE do another compilation of Favorite Stages! It's part game art appreciation, part attention to detail, & part technical showcase. Sometimes I play Sega Genesis Classics on my PSVR to really get immersed into my 1st childhood console's timeless games 🎮 🤓
Finally some love for Marble Zone. I really enjoy it as well. Great visuals and I don’t find it slow like everyone says. Music is really catchy and memorable too. Totally agree with you.
Can't go wrong with Sonic 2's Emerald Hill Zone. Beautiful lush green fields of endless grass with a beautiful view of the ocean in the far distance. I particularly like the look of the clouds in the sky and always liked the fact that there was another island in the far distance of the ocean view and the further you panned to the right of the level, the more you got to see this island. The music track is also a banger! Probably the best Sonic music track ever produced. The perfect Sonic Zone and one of my favourite stages.
Awesome video! A great game comes down to the level design and you covered some of the strongest in the 16 bit era. The writing you've done is impeccable and I want to try some of these games out after you covered them here.
A sewer level being a favorite is a pretty rare sight. Sewers and caves are usually the filler levels, though that might apply mostly to 3D games since they are easy to make (repeated textures, corridors, etc).
Rocket Knight Adventures Stage 1 is one of the best openings of any 16 Bit action game. Huge enemy variety from the get go and mini bosses around every corner. And it only get's better from there.
NES: Double dragon stage 3 (The ominous music, mountains and sunset in the back ground, had young me nervous) Renegade stage 3 (that alleyway had personality, the NPC's had plenty to do outside of fighting. Whats in that garage?) Mario 3 Big World (Everyone loves huge koopa troopas) Punchout training with Doc (NY never looked so cool. Even in the pink sweats w/ hoodie) So many
Comic zone stage 1 multiple fantastic music tracks great with different paths to take and an extremely unique graphics style not to mention the great gameplay
the horse stage of shinobi 3 gotta be my favorite, the atmosphere is just that good. and with the game about to recieve new installments. the preview for the horse stage is absolutely gorgeous.
Rocket Knight Adventures. I love everything about that game but stage 3 has such awesome music and having that red water that’s insta death when touched. It’s also cool how you have to use the reflection in the water to see behind the foreground.
Sonic 2: casino night... cus its night, its lights, its sounds.... and well, its casino! Sylvester and tweetey: dowtown. same here - its night, its lights, its sounds.... and well, its dowtown!
Great video as always my dude! Some solid picks, would definitely love to see more videos on this for the MegaDrive and other consoles too like Saturn and PS1/2. Personal standout levels on MegaDrive are: Rocket Knight Adventures - Stage 3 ~ For the reflective red water gimmick integrated into the platforming & epic music. Adventures of Batman & Robin - Mad Hatter Boss Stage ~ The combo of the killer EDM track and visual wizardry of the forward scrolling floor making dips and turns...it feels like the console should NOT be able to do it! Dynamite Headdy - Stair Wars/Towering Infernal/Spinderella ~ The climb up the tower with it rotating as you progress capped off with the boss that grabs the arena to spin it swapping you from the foreground to the background. Sonic 1 - Springyard Zone ~ Perfect layout rewarding players for getting daring with the spikeballed halfpipes and trap-filled slopes and funky music.
Fun video and interesting to see other peoples reasons for liking certain areas/levels. I recently had a half decent look at Comic zone after kind of ignoring it until now and wow, that is a GREAT looking game. Top tier presentation with outstanding animation. Vectorman also springs to mind in terms of super slick, super smooth visuals. That blew my mind in terms of the hardware of the Megadrive!
It’s always interesting to hear someone talk about their favorite stages, especially when they’re not ones I cared for. I hope that doesn’t come across as sarcasm; I like seeing things from a different point of view, or see if there is something I had overlooked.
Batman 91 on Genesis is one of the GREATEST Games ever made. It was sooo eerily true to the Burton version. The soundtrack totally combined Prince and Elfmans styles and it's glorious ❤
There's quite a few. From Thunder Force IV i've always liked the Ruin stage the most, the one with the robots on hoverboards, especially when selected as the first stage on the Maniac difficulty. The Arizona stage in Road Rash II has always been a fave and in Castle Of Illusion it's the Substage of the first stage, with all the big leaves. Contra Hard Corps has the best version of the Alien stage in my opinion and from the Streets Of Rage series, both second stages of the first two games. Then there's The Revenge Of Shinobi and Alien Soldier, and on and on...
Bloodlines is a really fun one. It sometimes didn't feel like the other entries in the series (for the time) but the game is a good Castlevania entry. I had so many games I liked on both Genesis and SNES. A good time to be a console gamer from 1988-1995 IMO.
When I was ten I would constantly pop in Sonic 2 just to play Chemical plant zone. Such a fun level with a cool aesthetic and that music! Still love that wicked bass line in the beginning. Another favorite level was the river stage in Jurassic Park, which I guess a lot of people hate for some reason but I think is so much fun! I think I used to enjoy starting the game from there.
Sky Sanctuary Zone and Death Egg Zone from Sonic 3 and Knuckles were two of my favorite stages in all of gaming. Both of them are so atmospheric and the music was incredible as well. Stage 8 from Streets of Rage 3. Both of them.
Nice! My favorite stage is that bridge in shadow Dancer, out of all the games on the Genesis I've played over the years that is one of my favorites. But to me, Thunder Force 4 is the best game, period. Still play it to this day, wish Technosoft was still around

Gotta be Green Hill Zone. Not because it’s my absolute favourite, but because it’s one of the earliest things I can remember experiencing.
The first stage from Shadow Dancer, Chemical Plant Zone and the beach stage from Streets of Rage always hit differently

This is the level i was expecting to be mentioned. It was such a fun stage to play!
Comic zone stage 1 multiple fantastic music tracks great with different paths to take and an extremely unique graphics style not to mention the great gameplay
Been waiting for this. Great stuff.
Level 2 in Hellfire. The music was incredible.
the horse stage of shinobi 3 gotta be my favorite, the atmosphere is just that good.
and with the game about to recieve new installments.
the preview for the horse stage is absolutely gorgeous.
Lava Planet in Thunderforce 3 was mind blowing when first seen.
Just about any Stages from the Classic Sonic games are just some of my favorite stages.
love the rainbow shimmering effect of the waterfalls in the sonic 2 level pick that happens on a CRT.
Rocket Knight Adventures. I love everything about that game but stage 3 has such awesome music and having that red water that’s insta death when touched. It’s also cool how you have to use the reflection in the water to see behind the foreground.
Thank you for getting me through a difficult time.
The first and the second stages of Aero Blaster (Air Buster) by Kaneko always gets me excited
Sonic 2: casino night... cus its night, its lights, its sounds.... and well, its casino!
Sylvester and tweetey: dowtown. same here - its night, its lights, its sounds.... and well, its dowtown!
I’m going to go with the Hartford Civic Center stage of NHL ‘94. The only stage where they play Brass Bonanza.
Great video as always my dude! Some solid picks, would definitely love to see more videos on this for the MegaDrive and other consoles too like Saturn and PS1/2.
Personal standout levels on MegaDrive are:
Rocket Knight Adventures - Stage 3 ~ For the reflective red water gimmick integrated into the platforming & epic music.
Perfect list 👍🏻
Fun video and interesting to see other peoples reasons for liking certain areas/levels. I recently had a half decent look at Comic zone after kind of ignoring it until now and wow, that is a GREAT looking game. Top tier presentation with outstanding animation. Vectorman also springs to mind in terms of super slick, super smooth visuals. That blew my mind in terms of the hardware of the Megadrive!
Nostalgia bomb landed! Thank you, my friend.
I think it's the first boss in alisia dragoon, where a storm erupts and the background starts scrolling very quickly, that really wowed me...
Totally agree with Narble zone being the best stage in Sonic 1
Bloodlines is a really fun one. It sometimes didn't feel like the other entries in the series (for the time) but the game is a good Castlevania entry. I had so many games I liked on both Genesis and SNES. A good time to be a console gamer from 1988-1995 IMO.
This is reflects my list exactly. The only missing item was the fire stage on Thunderforce 3. Well done!
Love this episode
Very cool episode
Greetings from Mumbai India. Love sega genesis ❤and Love this channel ❤❤
This is great. Definitely can do more videos like this
- Super Ghouls n Ghosts - Stage 5 (Ice stage) : Great somber music, awesome snow effect, remote feeling area.
- Air Zonk - Stage 2 (Cyber City) : Fantastic music, great parallax effects.
- Gargoyle's Quest - Stage 6 (Belzemos Castle) : Fantastic harrowing music, really challenging level design.
SGG was for SNES
Ice Cap zone, the music it what makes it so perfect.
Love that E-Swat boss music!
Watching this channel does a great job of quenching my 16-bit thirst.
Love my Sega Genesis!! 🎉
Toejam and Earl - Level Zero was my jam!!
TIL Sega Lord X loves parallax water haha (great video!)
Thunder Force 4, hell yeah! Wish I'd never sold my copy
Nice! My favorite stage is that bridge in shadow Dancer, out of all the games on the Genesis I've played over the years that is one of my favorites. But to me, Thunder Force 4 is the best game, period. Still play it to this day, wish Technosoft was still around
I was hoping the Strider Siberian wilderness stage would be on here. I used to gaze into the background during the big run wishing I could go there.
