Happy for you. I'm a multi engine pilot, and the way your flying it, your below critical single engine flight. One of those engines fail, it's going to screw you into the ground. Never forget, altitude and airspeed is your friend. Congrats and the best !!
You are right. John Denver would still be alive if he had been higher up. I think he reached over his shoulder to switch tanks...and pushed on one of his rudder peddles.
What nonsense that a failing engine will "screw you into the ground". How the flip did people get their pilots license? Mind you, twin engines. You must know more about airplanes than that nonsense. Because you learned that. Because it is safe to know something. What went wrong over there? Don't schools learn about forces and moments anymore? Don't flying schools explain that even better, when people are not natural mathematicians? Really, a prop in that position is almost perfect. The props are not far apart and I don't think the "thrust" will break the speed of sound. What is wrong with this Riley? The other advise is classical wisdom, however. Airspeed and altitude will keep you alive. Let me add a third one. In a low altitude turn, too much banking is safe, too much pedal (rudder) into the turn may kill you. Too much banking just makes you slip, and slipping most planes can not stall. The angle of attack changes. But too much rudder takes you closer to a spin. When your airspeed is low, turbulence or distraction can get you stalling. If that happens during this turn with too much rudder and not enough banking, you will spin. Low altitude, low airspeed, turning with too much rudder to final is the classic example. That spin will end in the ground. Conclusion, avoid low airspeed, skidding turns, at low altitudes especially. And that reminds me of Mr. Riley's screw into the ground. When you turn to final, and airspeed is too low, and you're not experienced enough to know that banking feels different at low altitude, things can go wrong. You just use your pedal to give a lot of rudder. That's a skidding turn. Now airspeed could drop a bit, or Mr. Riley's warning could kick in. If the pilot gives full throttle to correct low airspeed and too low altitude, and the switching electronics fails, there is one prop turning the airplane. In the given low airspeed, skidding turn, the nose drops and at low altitude there is nothing you can do to avoid a crash.

In my personal life, i try to learn something new every day, we all know that I is quite hard. But, when you do, and it's something that really catches your eye and inspires you or motivates you.... It's even better. Great video. In all your work in your project, from one man to another, I can't say that I'm impressed because that would be an UNDERSTATEMENT. It's AMAZING! I have over 12,000 hours of total flight time in B737, A321, Air Force jets, helicopters, light civilian single engine and multi engine aircraft, and dozens of combat missions in war. I was a certified maintenance test pilot as well as an aircraft crash investigator and this video scared the hell out of me.

At 15 feet up, the foam will have an imperceptible crack break right open and the whole shebang will fall. He will break his neck and die from a severed spinal cord. The imperceptible crack has already formed after the first landing.c
Well... it is a low thrust, low mass, large wing area, very low wing load aircraft. Can be used only with almost no wind - or I guess she could take off backwards relative to the runway :-) It is safe if the weather is really fine. See the take-off at 4:26. Looks like she has even some extra speed :-) I think it was more a challenge making that thing fly with big RC model electric engines than making a real functional ultralight.
Well, I don't mean to be mean, but there are four signs this man is in serious trouble. Or to state it nicer, he needs a pilot safety update. 1. It is getting dark, more dangerous than in day light. 2. He is in a hurry to fly before it gets dark. Stress is dangerous. 3. Flying low is more dangerous than flying higher. 4. First flight, something might go wrong. Testing that in those conditions is extra dangerous. More people mention this. He was lucky, and I hope next flights are better. Getting to the EAA might be smart. A former test pilot asked if the wings had a stength test. Let's hope hec thinks about that. But that was not the point. Point is, this was closer to the African homemade plane than you would say. Okay, it looks good and it flys, but really, is it good enough? Safe enough? Time will tell.
I'm nervous about the "getting the shot" mentality. That's not the right word, too harsh. But as I watch this, and I read the comments, I'm worried that the people here to see "the crash" are going to get to see one. If it's documented REALLY REALLY well, I think that might be telling. Try to spend your time thinking ONLY about the flying and let your buddies worry about how it looks. I think if you can disassociate yourself from the production side you'll be OK. And don't let them interfere with your flying either.... And how about flying during the DAY?! Rushing to get that last 15 minutes of airtime at arguably the worst time for light problems.... Long shadows, staying up too long and having to land in the dark because it was still light up there.... I've done it a bunch flying gliders..... You've got enough to worry about without having to race the light. With all that said, your doing a remarkable job. Your attention to detail and your build quality was fantastic. Amazed at how well you handle the aircraft for such low time in the airframe. I would really like to see you get some altitude though. Double your height quadruple your time to figure out what you're going to do if you have a problem. As it is now if you had a catastrophic failure you'd be on the ground before you get a chance to even diagnose the problem. I'm doing it again sorry. Hang in there man. Create a new statistic. The one where you succeed. Don't become another one of a statistic that already exists.

great stuff guys - I train, check and Test A320 Pilots and are thus super lucky to really meet the cream of the crop of motivated smart youngsters - thats what motivates me too to always do my best and prepare them as good as possible share all I know and teach them how to stay safe and keep their passengers equally so - but you are a notch up Peter, really , the likes of you can make us grumpy old farts actually stop worrying about humanities future for a moment and see a bright tomorrow with one or more brains avail to solve the great challenges you youngsters face due to my and previous generations not taking care of our mess and leaving it up to our children to deal with it by using the last bits of natural resources we kindly left for you - not to worry its not coutesy I am sure - I guess we just couldnt devour any more in this short time - again - this project/Initiative of yours is very good stuff and nothing is more of a transformer than aviation - aviation brings out the best version of ourselfes - because its challenging and mistakes deadly - a playground for those who really know what they are doing and have the science of aerodymanics - weight and ballance - propulsion-options - and constucting smthn to a sepecific strenght without becoming to heavy - create enough lift with min drag - many opposing design goals in this game - (to heavy is a classic and happens to the greatest names in the biz with teams of highly qualified and experienced specially trained engineers) - alright guys - keep up the great work, be creative, brave and outreagous but PLEASE always make all the efforts you can to stay S A F E - remember its better to be down here and to wish you were up there than to be up there and to wish you were ...well you get the idea - most important is the attitude of an aviator and something called airmenship - good airmenship is a multi layered character/educational/ and experience driven way we conduct ourselfs in the aviatic environment - it requires discipline, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING and a good portion of common sense self preservation drive and concern for other peoples as well as our owns well being. Stunt flying low level aerobatics and tricky landings isnt what kills pilots usually - the biggest threats to an aviator are - low hours, stress, scheduled flights for biz meetings, routine and over confedence in our abilities - only topped by pilot judgement errors here mostly about the flight conditions or flyablity of diff weather, then comes lack of training causing the classic incident rippple patterns like 1 judgement Error -2 Flight in IFR Conditions, plane not IFR equipped AND pilot untrainined in IFR procedures or instrument flying as a whole - next in line is - YES really FUEL Starvation - yupp - and at the very end of the risk factor ride thats where all the stuff we thought always go wrong. And yes I am of course talking about technical failures up to structural failure of the airframe - thats so seldom that it is basically a non issue compared to all others risks - make sure you do your maintanance properly and in a certified aircraft you are basically home safe - AND one last time just for good measure - well done Peter and congrats

Just getting into flying for my 50th birthday because I just found out you don't need a license and small sports planes license is pretty easy to get... My goals as a life long Nomad, see our beautiful country in a new way, Amphibious, land anywhere and make some $ doing it.

great stuff guys - I train, check and Test A320 Pilots and are thus super lucky to really meet the cream of the crop of motivated smart youngsters - thats what motivates me too to always do my best and prepare them as good as possible share all I know and teach them how to stay safe and keep their passengers equally so - but you are a notch up Peter, really , the likes of you can make us grumpy old farts actually stop worrying about humanities future for a moment and see a bright tomorrow with one or more brains avail to solve the great challenges you youngsters face due to my and previous generations not taking care of our mess and leaving it up to our children to deal with it by using the last bits of natural resources we kindly left for you - not to worry its not coutesy I am sure - I guess we just couldnt devour any more in this short time - again - this project/Initiative of yours is very good stuff and nothing is more of a transformer than aviation - aviation brings out the best version of ourselfes - because its challenging and mistakes deadly - a playground for those who really know what they are doing and have the science of aerodymanics - weight and ballance - propulsion-options - and constucting smthn to a sepecific strenght without becoming to heavy - create enough lift with min drag - many opposing design goals in this game - (to heavy is a classic and happens to the greatest names in the biz with teams of highly qualified and experienced specially trained engineers) - alright guys - keep up the great work, be creative, brave and outreagous but PLEASE always make all the efforts you can to stay S A F E - remember its better to be down here and to wish you were up there than to be up there and to wish you were ...well you get the idea - most important is the attitude of an aviator and something called airmenship - good airmenship is a multi layered character/educational/ and experience driven way we conduct ourselfs in the aviatic environment - it requires discipline, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING and a good portion of common sense self preservation drive and concern for other peoples as well as our owns well being. Stunt flying low level aerobatics and tricky landings isnt what kills pilots usually - the biggest threats to an aviator are - low hours, stress, scheduled flights for biz meetings, routine and over confedence in our abilities - only topped by pilot judgement errors here mostly about the flight conditions or flyablity of diff weather, then comes lack of training causing the classic incident rippple patterns like 1 judgement Error -2 Flight in IFR Conditions, plane not IFR equipped AND pilot untrainined in IFR procedures or instrument flying as a whole - next in line is - YES really FUEL Starvation - yupp - and at the very end of the risk factor ride thats where all the stuff we thought always go wrong. And yes I am of course talking about technical failures up to structural failure of the airframe - thats so seldom that it is basically a non issue compared to all others risks - make sure you do your maintanance properly and in a certified aircraft you are basically home safe - AND one last time just for good measure - well done Peter and congrats

Could you put a third motor on the nose? That would be amazing. It'd be like an old Ford Tri Motor but instead of 3 tractors, you'd have 2 pushers and 1 tractor.
