To get a better picture, spiciness from Mala is a joke compared to Samyang Korean fire noodle.
I can have up to x2 Spicy fire noodle without getting numbed while sweating like crazy, but getting numbed from having Mala soup while eating 1 Thai chilli by itself is actually a lot spicier.

I have only said "make it as spicy as possible" once while I lived in China. It was a sichuan place. The food was great and I loved going there, although a bit expensive for the area. The dude made it so spicy that I actually felt pain eating it. I took half of it home, and ate the rest the next day. Never fuck with the kings of spicy regardless of location, unless you're honestly ready. It was delicious though, and I did finish it, albeit on the next day. Lol
Went to Bangkok in grad school. Spent 3 months building up my tolerance for spices and heat at a local Thai restaurant. Was the best decision I could've made. I was able to try so much more local food, and it was amazing.

1. Very spicy = hell
2. Spicy = still hell
3. A bit spicy = spicy or very spicy (it varied)
4. Just a tiny little bit = a bit spicy
5. Not spicy = it still spicy (still had chilies in that)
Never trust SE Asian people when they say it's not spicy or god forbid when they said it's sweet!! We are just built different 😂
Not all food in S.E. Asia are spicy. Generally, I find Filipino , Vietnamese, & Brunei foods to be quite bland (not all dishes, but most).

But the general rule in SE asia for foreigner is still the same, never said "i like spicy food" that phrase is a trap. If you lucky it's actually really not a spicy food, otherwise you get a food that's "not spicy" for them

Actually, Thai people deviate the original sound from Chinese (Má Là) to Mâ Là because they try to avoid the complication of the other Thai word. Má in Thai means dog!😆 And Mâ in most Thai perception is from Chinese like someone’s last name (姓马). That’s why they all end up with Mâ Là instead of the right tone Má Là.

In France, they have warnings with the most spicy flavour and the waiters warn you too so that you don't sue them if the spice causes a reaction. As an Indian, I tasted the most spicy one and found it barely spicy enough while my French friends were teary with their medium spice flavor. Mala (麻辣) translates to numb spicy. It's very spicy that it feels numb 😂😂 I love it, but it can be a lot especially if you aren't used to chinese spices. She was trying to keep you from mala by suggesting the Japanese chili flavor
The numbness isn't caused by it being spicy tho. It's caused by a different spice that specifically only numbs. The spiciness is from the chilli

麻辣(mala) is numbing spicy. It has the sichuan pepercorns (huajiao) which give the numbing effect (ma) and chilies which are spicy (la). No matter the degree, mala will always be a different experience to other spicy food
