Awesome vid, you two. I really enjoy your take on these old toy lines. I also like how you both are fearless with "the hate mail". Your opinions are your own and you shouldn't have to change it because it may not be popular. I can't wait for your reviews of LJN's AD&D line from the very early 80's.

I'm an American living in Croatia and back when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia they had their own bootlegged line of MOTU figures. So, some countries even had some toys available even though they were the countries where they weren't actually "available."

i want to say first congrats on 5000 subs, you've earned it. i love seeing younger collectors being into the vintage versions of he man, star wars etc, cause as you said it shows the appreciation for the lines that came before the newer versions and also they may have parents who are introducing them to these old shows/toylines.whenever i see a kid wearing a SW shirt,i think that's parenting done right. the luke figure you mentioned had 2 varients, one in which the hand had a plastic tab that slotted into a hole and a bloody version of that. i see melinda's point aboot orko in the newer he man show but on the other hand if he wasn't in there ppl would ask why is he not there. i also think its interesting to think that POTF2 is almost 20 years old and for some ppl that was there version of vintage SW.

what you mentioned about the younger generation appealing to retro toys (about 16:00)...I feel compelled to share my take. I believe this is a cause of two reasons. One being that I just want to live in (what seems to me) like a simpler age. When imagination ruled the toy chest. Away from the mass overtaking of technology. As I am only 13, I really do understand and appreciate what technology has done, there is just something about 5 pts. of articulation than the minimum 13 of today. Its hard to explain, but there is just something about yesteryear that is more enjoyable than today. And like you said, I AM one of the people who wish they had been born upwards of 30 years ago! Like I said its extremely hard to explain, but some how, I wish I could. I guess what I really wanted to say is that to all of my fellow people who were born too late, I stand with you, and to all the people who fear for the future of toys, I as well as many other people will protect them after you no longer can. I am pretty sure that, that was what I was trying to say...yet remember, the 'toys' that MY generation are growing, or have grown up with are still going to have value to us, after all, they did us a huge favor, they gave us what every body needs in life, and should always and forever have in life: a child hood! Just as they gave our parents and so on.

One last original toyline we've seen these years has been Gormiti. They made everything from minifigures to actual action figures and even a giant playset in the style of the 80s (the Volcano Mountain). And they proved to be successful too.

I totally agree with the licensing topic. Toy brands seem to have lost their creativity. Also, in the 80s we had a wider range of different toymakers: Kenner's style was different from that of Galoob or Remco. Today we have Hasbro, Mattel, Bandai and Lego, and that's basically it.

These 2 are soo deadpan serious all the time. You're talkin about toys, not politics. "Why soo seious?"

    • @AxenFrite
      @AxenFrite 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I know you weren't talking to me, but I'd like to address your criticism and use it to frame my special 5,000 subscriber Retroblasting fanboy gush:
You obviously have not watched a lot of their videos.
      The balance is perfect.
*1)* Here they were answering questions, not doing stand-up.
*2)* And then they have a lot of AWESOME instructional videos for restoring toys.
(I don't remember getting a lot of belly laughs out of an episode of This Old House.)
*3)* And then, the reviews are entertaining, full of funny observations...and like, where else would you get a dramatized recreation of the trainwreck that was, the development of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors?
It is cool that they can talk seriously about old toys, but, no way are they "serious all of the time".
Go watch the overviews of Rambo and Thundercats, or "Skeletor Tours Castle Grayskull" or the video where he bitches about how all the Return of the Jedi figures only had sticks for weapons, and explain to me how they're deadpan serious all of the time.
To be fair, I did chuckle during this video, when they were talking about action figures dying out because kids are too busy with ipads and video games, Melinda /did/ make a face like she was a doctor telling you that you have cancer...but no way are they serious "all of the time".
Still, this is the best old toy channel on youtube. It's cool to hear real people really talking about this stuff and I wouldn't want them joshin' and muggin' and yelling in clown-voice like so many youtubers do.

Huh, I really like their demeanor and I think most of their viewers do, too. They use a professional presentation style but the passion and fun are evident, even just in the fact that they do what they do. And I can only guess that you haven't seen Melinda's exclamation when she got her childhood MLP's back. ("PONIEEEEEES!!! :D ")

anyone interested in Macross/Robotech and vintage toys is really just better off tracking down a Takatoku Valkyrie (or if they don't particularly care about it being an original, one of the many Bandai reissues) than any of the Matchbox stuff. And that's not even counting modern stuff, like the Yamato/Arcadia 1/60 V2s, or the Bandai 1/100 Hi-Metals. Also, for anyone with an interest in vintage mecha toys, Takara's Dual Model toys for Armored Trooper VOTOMs are worth checking out.
Unrelated question: Which Cobra Commander do you prefer? Helmeted or Hooded? (I assume you won't take a 3rd option and say the 1987 battle armor)

Hi. Love this video !! I especially agree about the comments made about girl's toys. The fact that it's 2015 and when you walk down a "girl's" toy aisle, you are smacked in the face with pink, rooted hair, and lolly pop headed figures with way too much make up is upsetting. My sister always played He-man with my brother and myself, because our toys were better and more fun. Sure, we were jerky big brothers and made her be Teela and Zoar and no one else, but she still had fun.
I swear, Mattel, Hasbro, etc. would make a ton of money if they made a toy line targeted at girls, but were made like boy's toys.

Shogun Warriors (the giant and various miniature) toy lines could make for interesting material. There was also a giant Alien toy (from the 1979) movie. I used to hang it from my bunk bed by its curled tail. It was especially fascinating to me as a six year old considering that I could not see the movie it was from!!! (there must have been a controversy behind that)

I have seen her in several videos and shes really cute. He's lucky too; She has a pretty face, nice boobs (ok better than nice) and she is into toy collecting -which this kind of nerd mentality is extremely rare with girls. I've never met a girl like her before. As for the old 80's stuff I will agree that the toys back then were a lot better in play value for the most part. Then again, don't make me compare G1 Transformers with everything we're getting now because its no contest at all. G1 Ironhide didn't have a head! haha I too am noticing how kids today are focused on TH-cam videos and flash games and little else. Its sad to think that as these kids get older and time passes that their attention spans will get so short they will have no time for imaginary play. I do see that happening though. By the way, I got my 3 year old nephew all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures (well almost all of em) in the Imaginext line. Its like Half Shell Heroes or something like that... They are pretty awesome and tomorrow is his birthday party and I got him the Shell Raiser for his figures. :)

for a property that could be interpreted well back in the 70's and 80's......would Power Rangers count? Given that they did air that hilarious Dynaman parody dub on the USA Network and Nickelodeon in the 80's and the camp of shows like that would be accepted in the 70's and 80's (shows like The Space Giants, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, Spectreman and Ultraman for example). Just saying

I'd love to see your take on LJN's Dungeons and Dragons line though I think it's unfair to label it derivative of He-man since the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game predates Masters of the Universe by four or five years and was itself predated by original Dungeons & Dragons going back to the mid 70s.

Super late in making this comment but what the hell....my major complaint of "vintage" vs. "modern" is the death of invention, innovation and creativity. The toy industry stopped caring about putting out new and fun things. Developing new gimmicks, technology or oddities. TV stations stopped caring about financing the same in intricate and well done cartoons. You get new cartoons but my god they look and sound horrid.
It's as lazy as you can get. The toy aisle is a joke, Saturday Morning is dead...it's just sad they gave up working hard to hit a home run and sat back to collect whatever easy money they can....and then wonder why their industry continues to decline.
The only thing I can think of that reminds me of the glory days is The Ugglys. Those little half puppet, half electronic toys stopped me dead in my tracks and were finally something NEW (and weird in a good way). Any toy with a molded butthole can't be bad.

While you guys bring up a good point about modern toy companies and not taking risks waiting for licenses. Or hasbro being a bit stubborn in not reviving M.A.S.K.
I still find your views to brutally nihilistic towards modern toys. But its your opinion.
I see some merits to modern toy design and the people that grew up with these properties being able to work on them with modern engineering.
I think they should probably revive it under the Transformers or Gijoe name.
Maybe the next gijoe design team could push for it. As currently Hasbro has no active gijoe design team after retailiations delay and financial loss had them cut.
