Just saw The Church tonight at Gramercy Theatre, a mere 42 years since I first saw them as a 14 year old on their first album tour. What a legend these guys are! Steve is in great form at age 68 and they were presenting their 26th album, The Hypnogogue, an instant masterpiece. But they brought down the house playing Tantalized as their next to last song. 10-minute 3-guitar aggression- absolute trance-like experience. Check their tour dates and go see them - incredible show !
I had such a crush on him as a teenage gal in the early 80s. Still love watching him play decades later. I met him once after a show, what a lovely, intelligent & funny man he is.
I saw The Church live around the Sometime Anywhere tour. I was a teenager at that time and I had found Priest=Aura a couple of years earlier and fell in love with it and inspired by that went through their back catalogue. It was a small venue and I was right next to the stage (incidentally, where I later performed as part of a band during my university years) just staring star struck and enjoying the music. Between the main set and the encore I asked Marty and Steve to sign my copy of the Sometime Anywhere CD (still got it). Steve seemed rather irritated and stand-offish (not blaming him at all about that, he was entitled to feel exactly as he did.. but I put on my best puppy eyes and called him Mr Kilbey, so he seemed to soften a bit and signed my CD in the end), while Marty was incredibly friendly and energetic. At the end of the encore Marty just wailed his guitar and then passed it on to me as they walked off the stage. I wish I had learned any song by them at that time, but now I was just stood there with a stupid grin on my face -- which was rapidly getting red -- as I gingerly put the guitar on the stage. That moment was one of the defining moments of my teenage years.
The boys ripped it up - the Orchestra didn't know WTF was going on - but just hung on. Brilliant 8.38mins. Awesome Lyrics & music. SK was pumped this night - prob because his mum was in the audience! - see the acceptance speech! Playing a few gigs around - can't wait.
The perfect song for this moment of hall of fame induction. This looks like a huge release for Steve (and probably the rest of the band) with what the band went through to get them to this point. Some of the people in this audience would have been involved in the "seductive logic"; "hired, fired yet never inspired" etc. Still get those shivers up the spine listening to this.
The genius of this band is their relaxed interpretations of each song (humble opinion). They never play it quite the same way. They jam! Kilbey is a true musician. They all are. They never compromised.
Just..... Wow. All of it. The build-up, the improv across the board, the tension of the music and the pure amount of fun these guys are having doing this is simply amazing. Well-done. Standing ovation, well-done.
One of my favourite Church songs, and a great rockin' performance done here. Actually I have too many favourite Church songs, but Tantalised is right up there.
Absolutely staggering energy, and the strings were superbly deployed. Can't help noticing that there was one thing missing that night though... me going nuts down the front.
Had tickets to see the 2011 tour in Chicago, but the snow was so deep from Dallas I couldn't get there. I have no idea how they got there, but I'm glad they did because the bootleg sounds great. Wish they would release a well-produced DVD of that tour.
@AitkenBogen No way dude, Steve still sounds great. He's a little exhausted maybe and caught up in the moment, but it's all pure. Saw them play 3 full albums in a row live earlier in this year and Steve's voice was dead on. In fact, you can hear him now better than ever over the music.
@AitkenBogen Steve never could sing, but that's completely besides the point. Absolutely fucking brilliant performance. Now if they'd only start playing "just for you" and "disenchanted" live, then i'd be in youtube heaven

Australia’s greatest rock band by far greetings from Melbourne australia
Love watching Marty play -- he radiates such sheer joy.

Marty Willson Piper....you were always the sound of the Church and always will be..
Peter Koops + Martin Wilson Peeper (The Church), Dave Fielding + Reg Smithies (The Chameleons). My Two prefer Guitar Duets of All Times.
I definitely miss Marty's contributions to the band ... so many amazing songs by this rock n roll icon, also known as The Church
@@nothinglastsforever77 We share both of those sentiments!
Yeah!!!! I just have a hard time really seeing them without MWP. I still love them and all their latest material is still incredible!

Awesome performance from one of our best ever bands at my old favorite venue. Yeah, I wish I was there, up the front, going off!!!
Gorgeous piece and the painting...a real feast for the eyes!!!! Stay well Roger, always.....love Marc in the US😎🖤💀👀🦇😘
Ahhhh yes one of my favourite songs of all time. I liked what they did with the outro, the original studio outro caressed the fabric of the universe
so many many years later.
A genuine rock and roll work of art SK is the Master
Absolutely fucking kick ass sonic wonderland
This just gets better every time I listen to it!
From my fave album...just brilliant!
This band is so awesome.
Oh F***K that's as good as it get's ! I love the Church !#SteveKilbey
It's probably the first time everyone in this room has heard this song. Sad, really, but that's the biz.
The Church made their mark this night.
Absolutely brilliant, they are so good live
Absolutely staggering energy, and the strings were superbly deployed.
Can't help noticing that there was one thing missing that night though... me going nuts down the front.
that was absolutely amazing, thank you so much for posting. what a perfromance!

Wow. On point. Outstanding.
F*UCKIN' AWESOME !! They still are BIG !
Still a breath taking performance....
The video with the Sydney skyline back drop at night was visually equal to this songs qualities

Sounds so great with the orchestra, just like the album

Clearly on their way to the Opera House.
Marvellous performance.
One of Steve's best lyrics, and that's a tough competition :)
Great Australian band. I always thought this song was about drugs. But now I can here the lyrics better, I think it's about the music industry.
What a tight performance!
They sound exactly the same as original. My fav song.
Lol
fucking astounding!!!!!!!
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
.......they kill it here, bravura...having said that, there was a time when SK could sing the songs & play without the pulsate being so notable
Steve Kilbey Lives!!
Australia's finest.
Very KEWEL JEWEL!!!!!!
Love em'! But I feel old....look at the stiffs in the audience, get up damnit!!!!
I'd have been losing my mind at the front few tables lol! This is simply the kind of shit you MIGHT get lucky and see once in a lifetime :)
@@somecolbyguy1833 I was lucky enough to see them with Peter Murphy at Sloss Furnace in B'ham. Best night ever!!!✌
como te quedas?
The way like, "say" ian gillan Deep Purple become like long haired git celebrity's . Well MWP and this band need that type of gratification.
they fcked up what made this song their best.
@AitkenBogen
Steve never could sing, but that's completely besides the point.

Nick is so crazy-Nigga so crazy! sounds the same))))
Brilliant arrangement, but sadly for us, Steve's voice is past it
Boring .. I hated having to set through this band when touring .. A support band they were in the 80.s
