    They should of named it Annoying Green Horse Habits, not all horses that do these are young ;)
    How about an episode on Annoying Young Rider Habits and coaching them to not do it?

    I've had a seven year old mare for a week now, and the previous owners of her said she was bad at standing still. I have used every opportunity to get her to stop and stand still until she is told to move. And in just one week she has gotten extremely much better. When she moves, I say "no" and move her back. Also, she must stand longer if she moves. When she's good, I say "good girl" and scratch her under the forelock.
    She went from spinning around in the stables when I brushed her, and now I can braid the whole mane without her moving a muscle. Everything from positive experiences for her. She is also obsessed with looking at things. She doesn't react in any other way than just looking, and she is allowed to see. If she is skeptical of anything I take into the stable, or anything outside, I let her look and/or smell it, and then she just don't care anymore.

    When I go to get on a green horse that is moving, I hold my foot in the stirrup, but I have their head bent around to the side so all the further they can go is in a circle. Once they stop, I take my foot out of the stirrup and try again. I do this until the horse is standing. Not only that, but I always tell them "Whoa". That's the word EVERY horse should know, and it should mean plant all four feet. It's a livesaver, trust me. And of course, when the horse is standing still, I get on, but after I get my other foot in the other stirrup, I immediately start bending their head from left to right. This teaches them that even though I get on, it doesn't mean they go right away. Eventually they will just stand wherever I put them, whether it be a mounting block, a ditch, or flat ground.
    If you have a horse that likes to take off when they get turned loose in the pasture, there is a much more effective way to teach them not to run off. First, you bend the horse's head towards you. You can take the halter off the nose, but keep it around the neck and keep the head tilted towards you. Then, when YOU are ready to turn the horse loose, take the halter completely off and YOU walk away from the horse. The horse will then learn that it doesn't have to run off. If you let the horse walk away from you, this will also pose a problem later on for catching the horse. When you walk away from the horse first, you are taking the pressure off the horse first instead of the horse taking pressure off itself and running off.

    my OTTB mare, who I've only ridden about 15-20 times has the opposite bit problem! She practically launches for the bridle!! Oh, the magic of a copper bit! She LOVES the bit! Its just a simple big Dee ring, with nice thick bars, double jointed with a copper lozenge. all I do to bridle her is drop the halter around her neck (USPC member!!), put the reins over her head, and hold the top of the crown piece, she grabs the bit, and all I have to do is adjust the straps and fasten them! Love her!

    I'm sorry... The horse with the problem with his bridle... Please tell me you haven't got a flash nose piece... I'd have a problem with it too if it meant having my mouth restricted for the sake of looking better.

    • @OneMoreMileAnHour
      @OneMoreMileAnHour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some horses need them because it keeps their mouth shut; it's not to make it look better

    • @jaymiking4822
      @jaymiking4822 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +OneMoreMileAnHour What possible benefit is there of restricting their mouths? I mean for the animal.

    • @OneMoreMileAnHour
      @OneMoreMileAnHour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Jaymi King don't get me wrong; I don't use a flash or grackle, my horse just has a regular old cavesson but some horses do need them. The pony I loan from my friend to keep mine company, she's old but very, very fiery! If you hack her out she hates to walk, if you trot her she wants to canter. If you canter she wants to gallop!! She is an ex-BSJA pony and is very feisty despite her age. She's in a strong bit and my friend has recommended to never ride her owithout the flash noseband because she's so strong, she opens her mouth to avoid the boy's action, so the flash makes her keep it shut. And trust me she's one speedy pony so I wouldn't want to try!

    • @OneMoreMileAnHour
      @OneMoreMileAnHour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +OneMoreMileAnHour *she opens her mouth to avoid the bits action...damn auto-correct. Not equine friendly.

    • @jaymiking4822
      @jaymiking4822 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +OneMoreMileAnHour I see where you are coming from, but surely there is a better way to get a horse to do what you ask... There is a horse at the yard who was very similar to the pony you described there when he first arrived. Was on a hard bit and so on, and was an absolute nightmare to control, until the woman who owned him changed him over to a bitless bridle and did a fair amount of schooling... He is fine now, and much more happy. No they don't work for everyone... I just think more people should look at alternatives is all...

  • @sandyhausrath
    @sandyhausrath 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For problem #3: I always put the rope around the horse's neck before pulling the halter off so I can use the rope to hang onto the horse if he tries to take off. I find I have a better grip on the rope than I would on the unbuckled halter -- especially since I'm 5'3" and my guy is 16.3. All he'd have to do is raise his head a little to make me lose my grip on an unbuckled halter strap! Plus, that way my horse is learning what I want him to do when I take the halter off in the ordinary (easier) way, instead of setting us up to always have to take it off by the buckle.
    Most importantly, he always gets a treat after the halter comes off. He has no interest in running off because he wants to know what I have in my pocket for him :D

      Haha you're so funny, just like the other animal rights hippies. Get a life I bet you don't even ride. If you did you'd realise bits are often necessary. I'd like to see you go hunting or cross country without a bit.

    • @meganfalconer2000
      @meganfalconer2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +OneMoreMileAnHour Rude to accuse people of things for starters lmao. I do ride, minus the bit; sure it takes a lot of work but it's called Natural Horsemanship and in the end it all pays off because you can do things like eventing without a bit which is a lot better for the horse. The bits are in place so that we are superior and able to control which isn't right, if a horse doesn't want to do something, why would you force it?

    • @OneMoreMileAnHour
      @OneMoreMileAnHour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Megan Falconer because if you were at an even that you'd paid a lot of money to enter and it's full of other horses and it'd be dangerous for you to be out of control, you'll want to have control whether your horse likes it or not. Better for you, him and everyone around you. And yes in an ideal world you wouldn't need a bit or anything to control him, he'd want to do it himself. However this isn't the reality. There are situations where your horse may get excited or scared and instinct takes over but having control is still important!

    • @meganfalconer2000
      @meganfalconer2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +OneMoreMileAnHour You can do it just fine with a bridle minus the bit. Even barrel racing are starting to ride without bits. Why for a mass of money would you put your and yourself in a dangerous situation in the first place though? Say your show jumping - there is only you in the arena and if you have a great bond and understanding with your horse - which riding is kind of about - you can do it with a bitless bridal.

    • @OneMoreMileAnHour
      @OneMoreMileAnHour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Megan Falconer it's a dangerous situation if you have no control. And if your horse is excited and in a group of other horses, or in an open space (such as when hunting or doing xc) you need to be fully in control or else it's dangerous.
      Also, I don't understand why people think bitless bridles are kinder, they can cause just as much pain as a bit!

    When I was doing self care I would sometimes help this lady with her two horses. When you turned one of them out he would just wrench away with you full force. Not even two seconds from when he felt the halter sliding.
    To fix it I would just give the halter a good pull so he would think he was loose and then shank him when he tried to turn and run. Loosened noseband area also so it would slide down a bit as well. Don't let them get away with it in the first place and it won't be a habit.

    My gelding starts to move off before I get on and refuses to stand in front of the mounting block on occasion. I can't get on from the ground sometimes because he starts moving off. • @SolanosPearl
    @SolanosPearl 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't agree that these are young horse problems, I would say they're untrained or poorly trained horse problems. My horse is 3.5 years old; he's only been ridden for a year (most of which he had off with our horrible winter we just had) and does absolutely none of these habits. He's a well mannered gentleman. When I put him out to pasture he will actually look at me as if asking "Mum, am I free to go?" before walking off to his buddies, he takes his bridle with no fuss or question and he has always stood for mounting. I personally have trained him myself and can put a confidant adult green rider on him (I have in the past, at only 2 months of riding) and will give pony rides to kids as young as 4/5 years old without question.

    • @ChicBeautyxo13

    • @misstweetypie1

    When I got my mare she had issues with when I let her out she would immediately turn and go so I taught her to stand until I said "go on" by telling her stand when I unclipped the lead rope and if she went to move I grabbed her and said "stand" until she stayed still for a bit then I let her go. Now she waits until I say go on and even sometimes after I say go on she'll even hesitate to go to make sure she really is allowed to go.
    I really like these tips ill definitely try the mounting one because she's done that before too :)

    Number 2. Ugh. My five year old is terrible about that. Sometimes he's great but then other times he just does not want to stand still and he just keeps side stepping and it becomes such a huge problem.
    I blame the weather. It's getting windy where I keep him and he behaves really badly if there's wind because he's been good about it all summer.
    Otherwise he's really good for a 5 year old.

    Great tips! A bit of a further an long thing, but my young horse is learning to work in an outline and he favorite thing to do is put all of her weight in my hands and try to get me to carry the weight of her head around. If I try and push her forwards properly into my hands, she just moves faster -- it has made her become very rein dependent and is giving me blisters! I've had people tell me to "drop her on her head" and do LOTS of transitions -- and I've tried both but neither is helping :S

    My horse does that thing where he moves after i get on him, but when i first got him he use to just take off because he hated to stand still. He still walks off after i get on him, but he doesn't take off at a quick pace like he does. Although i am going to have to fix it because i can never get my feet in the stirrups quick enough. Thanks for the video! :)

    Guys, i love your chanell so much! Thaks for the advises, they are relly helpfull!
    I have a typical pony problem - when I trying to put a briddle on, he is not "accepting" the bit. Like ignoring it and it is impossible to open his mouth without applying a finger.
    Can someone plz help me???

    Hi Evention Tv could you plz do a video on how to stop your horse running away from you in the stable when you are trying to tack them up. My 12 year old mare has a big problem with this the only way I am able to get the bridle on her is by using a treat.

    My Arabian wouldn’t bit up. Finally we got the bridal on. Told my husband after he rides him take the reins off and don’t feed him all day. He had water. Next day he couldn’t wait for the bridal. Arabians are super smart. Also he was in two acres and couldn’t catch him. So I just kept him running around. He finally gave in and came right to me. Never a problem again.

    I need help with my young green broke mare. She is a very naughty little thing, and when I go to take off the clips on the wash rack and put on her bridle, she will either back way up until she is off the wash rack or she will immediately move away from me and begin to graze, and pays no mind when I try to pull her head up. She is extremely impatient and rather rude, and I have gotten onto her about a lot of things so far, but this in particular is becoming a real challenge for us. It's really dangerous, too! Any tips?
    p.s I loooove this channel!

    Off course youngsters put their head away from the bridle.. Who would want a bit in their mouth? You are the annoying one, not them.. Calling them annoying... geez ..How about you remember you are trying to do something really invasive to an animal. You don't get to be annoyed about it. We think of bits as what ever, but to a young horse it IS very invasive and something they accept in time out of their kindness..

    would you be able to do one on bad ground manners in general? like wont stand still at all when you're tacking them up or leading them? I've tried making my horse go backwards if he wont stand still but it doesn't work

    My horse bridles herself!!! Look up Game Of Contact with Linda Parelli to see the method I use!! It's awesome to just hold out my bridle and my mare buts the bit right in her mouth! Takes me no more then 5 sec.!

    Is this an american or English channel? It looked gloomy, so maybe English, and the tack was English (But Americans do ride English aswell) but most horse channels are American.

    Beginner 101 training. Most of these issues are created by man. Trained right from a few months old none of these issues would happen. Unless they are just stable horses that EVERY one rides, then bad habits are created.

    It's not a young horse problem. It's a respect/behavioral problem. Weather may play a factor, but it doesn't ever give your horse an excuse to move without your consent. A horse that moves right away like that is a dangerous horse. What Dom said in this video is great advice. I've found that if a horse moves away from me like that, I start making him work harder. Move his feet around. He soon will understand that it's a lot more pleasurable to stand still and wait.

    It is certainly the most annoying of the three for me. I told this one lady I wouldn't turn out her horse for her anymore unless she let me work with him after he ripped off my cuticle pulling away at turnout. Didn't help that she kept her horses stalled 80 percent of the time. I understand why he was excited but there has to be safety and boundaries.
    Try faking your horse out because if you have a really violent pull away you wont be able to hang on the way they show in the video.

    I have a young OTTB and he is fine mounting from the ground 98% of the time (he likes to move forward early sometimes) But when it comes to the mounting block..he turns pushes it down then looks at me...he is 17.2hh and growing..I would love to ease his back and my tack...though he seems to look at me and say..you don't need that mom!
    Should I spend an hour just mounting and dismounting? I can tell you after two bouts he would be bored!

    thanks for tick tip, but I have to say the bridling of the horse was torture to watch, it is very easy to train a horse to lower his head first and bring it around and offer to put his own nose in, I see it all the time and my horses know how to do it. Also are flash bands necessary? If i were a horse I'd avoid someone who lets the bridle stab me in the eye and doesn't bother to put one ear in at a time gently. This lesson needs a redo!

    Grrr shutup haters!!! They arrnt doing anything wrong!!!!!! Cant you read?! The title says YOUNG HORSE HABITS. All of the young horses i have worked with do this because they are smart and cheeky. At least they are gentle. I hate it when some people have to just stir things up and comment that its bad because they dont have anything else to do! This video is fine. BarnWitches much...

    My horse becoms a bit agressive when mounting or being taller then him. He walks off and turns his head to my hand like if he was going to bite me. This only happens when i try to keep him still or when i just go on, he takes a few steps but doesnt have that tiny agression. I know the " abression" isnt that much but ya, have any tips? (He's an ex-race horse so i think he had been broke only for the track money which they didnt take enough time to train him)

    My gelding isn't overly young, he's 7. He loves to move around when I'm trying to get on him, frankly it's annoying when I need to get up and go. I have been working on it and he's improving.

    or another way to keep a horse from pulling back is put the lead rope on the horses neck. when the lead rope is on the horses neck they know they are caught and won't try to pull back

  • @kilbraur

    So the horse doesn't want that noseband, which he has learned contains a bit and means he can't open his mouth properly. He doesn't want to be mounted because it means carrying all that extra weight and he wants to run away as soon as he feels the bridle coming off.
    Do you not think the horse is trying to tell you something.... Duh!

    A tip with the bridle is to put a bit of black treacle on the Bit and that way the horse will associate it with something really yummy and will eventually stop throwing their head about! worked really well with a 19'2 hands I know! x

    mine is 24 and rarely stays still when i mount 😂 but he compensates with not only being nice while putting on a bridle, but he actually OPENS his mouth?! i have had him for 9 years and i still got no idea why he does that 😂

    After he did the right thing you would want to release pressure with mounting block or bridal. Make the right thing easy. You just encouraged him to walk off with you.

    I had the struggle of having my horse stand still when I wanted to mount her today. She always patiently awaits the moment I touch the stirrup with my foot and then decides to walk off.. =_= My trainer and I are still working on that!

    Your horse avoids the bit because he does not like it. You disrespect him by running the leathers over his eyes, then fold his ears. And then you tie his mouth shut. Go back to the beginning, take thebit out of hismouth and learn to ride him wiht his permission.

    My horse STILL does all of these things and he's 17! He never had a lot of ground manners when I got him (almost 4 years ago), and no matter how much I try, he still occasionally runs away when going into turnout, walks away while mounting, and puts his head up for bridling!
