The chase was careless, irresponsible, and obviously dangerous. The arrogance of that cop defying orders to abort the chase, thinking that his lights would be enough. This particular cop should be charged with murder. It was a robbery, not a violent crime that endangered the public, that cop endangered the public. 4 people died, and families were forever destroyed because of one cops arrogance. Unacceptable!

The definition of robbery in Canadian law is theft committed with violence, or with the threat of violence (usually the display or threat to use a weapon).
Yes, it should have been called off. The van probably still would have collided with a vehicle and these deaths probably still would have occurred.
There is no reasonable prospect of a conviction for any kind of homicide against the police officer as the crown would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the deaths would not have occured if not for the police officer's action. No judge or jury could possibly convict him.
It's a sad sentiment when common sense is no longer common. Especially in this particular case. There was no threat to the general public, and with the use of air support, the van would have likely been found. That chase didn't warrant the death of innocent people. It was careless, irresponsible, and unprofessional. All factors were obviously not taken into account. There was no danger to the public until that cop decided to take it upon himself to pursue the van going the wrong way on a major highway. His judgment, or lack of, speaks volumes about the cop.

You then talked about administrative punishments and lessons learned, which are items I never addressed and you have no evidence to suggest that I disagree with.

Even if police stopped the pursuit, this guy would've kept goibg at top speed. Just because cops aren't behind him anymore he knows they'll be waiting up ahead. This pursuit was a difficult one for sure. Do you try to warn the public with your lights or do you just let him go. Either way there was bound to be a crash. Most police are really fed up with our catch and release system of justice. No wonder we can’t get people to be police anymore! It’s going to get a lot worse before this starts to turn around. Thankfully me and my family don’t live in a crime infested cesspool of a big city.

I have to say, the police chase was very aggressive even compared to what takes place in Los Angeles. A police helicopter should have been deployed and the officers should have gone to tracking mode. This could have had a much different out come. BTW the PIT maneuver can not be done safely at speeds over 35 mph. CHP and LASD don’t permit the PIT at freeway speeds. Both departments would have gone to helicopter tracking mode for the entire duration this chase took place before re-engaging the pursuit.

I thought the SOLE reason the police were not participating was due to the "DEFUNCT the police" protest 3 years ago.
There was absolutely NO reason to continue the pursuit by car when helicopters can track the suspect without endangering the Public. The officer in question needs to be charged with Reckless Endangerment and Negligent Manslaughter, at the very least. Police policy, training and practices are all too often shown to be seriously lacking.
Why is Canada taking those types of people and only them as opposed to nice Europeans ?

The second it becomes a "thing" that police won't pursue you if go the wrong way on a road, every criminal in the country is going to use this trick and see if they can get away with it. No different than kids these days knowing that retail stores prohibit their employee to intervene thieves or robbers, even if they get caught, they know they won't be charged as an adult in our system, the worst would be for them to go to Juvie for a few years and get out with no criminal record, that's why they keep doing what they do. Our county has become so soft and weak these days it's not even funny.
Not only that, but I'm sure if successfully sued, it would be a pretty bad precedent for police. They may not even want to pursuit anyone out of fear of criminal prosecution for the perpetrators actions. I mean, what if it was someone drunk driving on the wrong side of the road? Does that not warrant the continuation of pursuit, as it's a greater risk to public safety as par 5 (c), or would they now be expected to not intervene in these situations? If they refuse to intervene, would they again be held accountable for doing nothing for public safety? Man, oh man.... it's going to be a nightmare.

Pursuit must be relegated to the performing arts. A car's computer should have a wireless feature similar in concept to WIFI so that police can pick out the suspect vehicle on screen and bring it to a controlled stop.

I'm sorry but the police are getting out of hand! If the police didn't follow the vehicle I doubt any death would have happened.. they put others in danger and need to rethink how they approach these situations. it's common sense! Innocent people lost their lives including a child because of this 😢
Hard to say. Once the suspect vehicle made decision to entered the highway the wrong way the tragedy was a foregone conclusion. Even if the police had followed orders and call off pursuit - no guarantee the collision would have been averted

If they didn't follow him I don't feel that he would have gone on to the highway in the wrong direction. He would have probably taken a different route but because he had so many police officers on his tail he was triggered which caused him to go on the highway in the opposite direction. The police should have never followed him.. it's common sense! I'm not sorry to say this but the police need to be held accountable for their actions.

Umm. Support for Gaza isn't part of "divergent views." It's a principled call for justice for oppressed peoples. It should be the *dominant* view at universities, and indeed it will be, since they are only committed to facts, history, and truth. You should try that, Global.
The problem here is that the people of Gaza were oppressed NOT by Israel but by Hamas. Jews unilaterally left the area twenty years ago, only to be bombarded by rockets from Gaza ever since, starting soon after their withdrawal, hence the blockade. And then came the true genocide of October 7. You are absolutely right, it is not enough to automatically swallow a one sided narrative, it is our duty as civilized humans to explore all sides, no matter how "divergent" they seem to be.
