For those who love this superb performance of Shostakovich S4 conducted by Kirill Kondrashin, I recommend to listen the version of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks by Mariss Jansons (2004). It has the quality, timing and performance of Kondrashin’s but with a superb sound. In my opinion the version of this symphony conducted by Jansons is better than others conductors like Rostropovich, Haitink, Gergiev, Myung-whun Chung, Kitajenko, Rozhdestvensky.
'You ask if I would have been different without “Party Guidance”? Yes, almost certainly. No doubt the line that I was pursuing when I wrote No. 4 would have been stronger and sharper in my work. I would have displayed more brilliance, used more sarcasm, I could have revealed my ideas openly instead of having to resort to camouflage; I would have written more pure music.’
