- petrol and diesel have different properties..
One of the main property is Auto ignition temperature..
AUTOIGITION TEMP :
Petrol is nearly 260 degree celcius..
Diesel is nearly 210 degree celcius..
Diesel have low auto ignition temperature..
Autoignition temperature means..a fuel which starts burns automatically at particular temperature..

Because of low auto ignition temperature.. diesel can easily ignites when spray over the hot air..
In diesel engine..air is sucked in suction stroke….then the air is compressed by piston, while compressing the air heat is generated in air medium..
heat is generated by compressing the air..
Now our goal is to be autoignite the diesel by spray the diesel droplets over the hot air..
Here the main factor is COMPRESSION RATIO..
It is the ratio between total volume to the clearance volume..it is like 8:1, 12:1, 20:1….
Take the compression ratio 20:1
It means..first number tells the total volume and second number tells the clearance volume..
Take 1000cc car, assume it's clearance volume is 50cc….then Compression Ratio is 20:1
Clearance volume means the total volume(1000cc) of sucked air is compressed at that volume of space(50cc)..
1000cc of air is compressed and tight within the 50cc, hence result is generation of more heat…..when spray diesel over the hot air..diesel auto ignities..
Hence diesel engines have more compression ratio than petrol engine..
Petrol have higher volatility as compare to diesel due to lower flash and fire points. You can increase compression ratio and try to burn petrol without spark plug also but problem is high volatility of petrol. If you do so (try to burn petrol only through compression keeping compression ratio much high as 18-20), it will burn abruptly and it will cause knocking and irregular combustion which restricts the design of petrol engines to lower compression ratio (due to burning characteristics of petrol). Since now compression ratio is lower therefore we need additional support in form of spark plug to ignite mixture (since auto-ignition/ kindling temperature to keep burning charge is higher in petrol (~280C) as compare to diesel (~240C) ) that’s why we use spark plug in petrol engines.
Due to this fact only petrol engines follow constant volume burning/ heat addition (otto cycle) since due to high volatility petrol burns abruptly and it burns instantaneously with out piston moving towards BDC (during power stroke) keeping volume almost constant during heat addition, hence otto cycle is constant volume heat addition cycle (theoretically, practically there is some lag hence ideal cycle is different than actual cycle) . Where as diesel is slow burning fuel therefore constant volume heat addition is not possible and fuel is controlled by injector spray hence it has constant pressure heat addition (even if piston moves towards BDC (during power stroke) , part of diesel will continuously burn (not abruptly ) hence keeping pressure almost constant during heat addition). Therefore diesel follows constant pressure heat addition cycle.

Sir Petrol having auto ignition tem is 280 c but at the time compression strock in petrol engine tem rise to 250c to 350 c so then why we required spark plug.
