Ned here for the major lesson Mr Quincy. The solo was out of this world in so many ways. How you worked your way into it, bit by bit adding the textures and also the touch, using the rims and edges or bending the skins, like WOW Quincy ! The advice and info was, as usual, essential and enlightening to say the least but with a light touch and good humor. All the best and keep healthy. Tip #9 is often overlooked. I've heard too many drummers whack away at rim shots on a snare and it's ear piercing in the wrong room. The other tip is #1 Dynamics. Sometimes overlooked for the moment to be sensational.

Play in a jazz quartet called JAZZTEROIDE and I have a solo in a song: God Bless The Child, in a Keith Jarrett Trio version and its really dificult for me because is not a swing and is not easy to play a diferent solo in each show, I will try to use your coments in this video, when I improve my english, you will be my teacher (If you want obviously), I consider your way to teach EXCELENT!!!! thanks

WOW! Many Thanks for the shout out 😀 Another phenomenal lesson! Number 9 excited me as I have had to adopt to many kinds of rooms. Strange as it might sound, the other idea I have used as “playing the room”, is looking at people or characteristics of the room itself for solo pattern ideas.

7 (Interaction with the audience) -> I have to work on this one, a lot of the times I tend to be too "introverted", I think that 9 (play the room) is corelated, I think about Max Roach concept "Big Room" as explained by Joe Farnsworth!
And 10! I love it, don't plan... When I did my last recital on the conservatoire of Perpignan some years ago, I had my open solo planned with some "guidelines", from now on, I will listen to you, and just improvise thinking to all the keys!
Tip 2 tension and release is a game changer too!

Everything you said applies to all musicians, regardless of instrument. We need to challenge the jazz pedagogical paradigm and finally put drummers in their rightful spot--as the leaders teaching the artform. QD, if you ever start your own jazz program--I'm in like Fin. I said it before, but everyone should take lessons from Quincy Davis--no matter your instrument. I still have my notes from our lesson and I don't "technically" play drums (guitarist, guilty as charged). You wanna play swing, bebop, hardbop, or free--you got balance your diet with the language of the drum! Don't worry, that mountain of theory books on harmony won't up and leave ya ;)
I appreciate those glowing words. Starting a jazz school is definitely something. I’ve always wanted to do as I feel I would be able to run it anyway best would help students which is not the case for a lot of programs unfortunately. Cheers my man!
@@drumqtips are you in touch with Patrick Bartley? He is one of the few jazz cats these days who is obsessed with drums, even though he plays a horn. We need the tides to change--there's so much about rhythm and pulse that teaches us how to apply all that harmonic theory. Charlie Parker was such a rhythmic cat himself, yet we barely scratch the surface with his genius.

Hey cool vid, you may be able to help here quincy... When playing the solo do you count in your head? I always get stuck counting everything even basic fills and rhythm🤔 and another thing how do you make sure what you are playing comes out correctly? Like is it your head that thinks of it and if so how do you get out of your head and just play? Thanks.
I think if you compare drumming with speaking a language, I think you’ll be able to answer your own question. Do you think before you speak or can you just speak and it makes sense? I’m sure you do not have to think about what you want to say as you’re saying it because it happened so quick and you’ve spoken the language that you speak for so long that it comes out very naturally without having to prepare mentally or even think about it mentally unless it’s a really deep thought that you’re trying to put together. Same thing with playing the drums and playing music in general. Hope that makes sense!

DO YOU PREFER OPEN DRUM SOLOS OR SOLOING OVER A FORM?
Soloing over a form provides a bit of reference or structure, but open drum solos are fun and creatively interesting.
Personally tradings are my favourite because I can use what other instruments play to help my clogged ideas
