  • Sure, it makes sense that a racing style trike would be faster than a touring style trike in an all-out sprint, but you never really know unless you put it to the test! Let's see if the VTX really is faster!

    "Speed is not everything."
    Yup, speed is the least (not by any choice) of everything for this rider.
    Recumbent trikes have literally changed everything in the cycling world!
    No-balance riding is benefitting the cycling universe hugely!
    Enjoyed your multiple speed comparisons here!

      Hey, Gary! Yep! One of the great things about trikes is that they give you the option of comfortably cruising along at a recreational pace, giving you the ability to really take in the scenery without even having to worry about staying upright! My only issue with that is that when I'm on that type of ride, I sometimes spend so much time looking at the scenery that I become in danger of running in to the trike (s) in front of me. :) I've often thought that brake lights on a trike would be a good idea!

    Glad you’re back, missed you last week. I knew the GTO had no chance against the VTX. A race between a VTX and Catrike 700 would be interesting. When we got our trikes, one of the things I wanted to avoid was having different tire sizes, so we opted for 20’s all around. The Catrike Trail is more upright, similar to the GTO. One thing we love is the tight turning radius and how we can whip around things at lower speeds. It really can be like a roller coaster for older people.
    Back to the race ideas. A race from dead stop might be interesting to see how quick you can get up to speed. Maybe a high school track, 100 meter trike race where no one has to hold the camera? Have a great weekend!

      Hey, Dan! I've heard that a 20" rear wheel should "spin up" faster, but that a 700c rear would be better at holding high speeds, but I don't know if there's really that much of a difference. I'm pretty sure that a light, aero trike, with 20" wheels all around (like the Greenspeed Aero) would do just as well as the VTX for overall speed, and maybe better, as the Aero is a dramatically reclined trike. We really need to get our hands on a Catrike 700 and a Greenspeed Aero so we can do some "apples to apples" comparisons! You're right about the turning radius on the 20" rear wheel trikes. The VTX has such a long wheelbase and wide turning radius that it can be a problem on tight turns. I often miss my now-sold Catrike Pocket. It was one of the original Pockets, and had to have been the lightest and most maneuverable trike I ever owned. We're gonna have to go back out and try this again from a standing start and try switching riders as well!

      @@bikestrikesrazors I’m not sure how close you are to Laidback Cycles, but they might be up for a collaboration video. Then you might also be able to test Terra Trikes racer.
      We contacted the Pocket for my wife, but she wanted the same as me, good thing I didn’t go for a Dumont! Can’t wait to see what you guys do next, always entertaining.

      @@Olyphoto7 Laidback in Fair Oaks is across the street from my dentist. :) I always go in there to look at trikes after my check-up. They did have an Aero in stock for a split second, but it sold and I haven't seen another one. Mickey and the techs are really nice folks and they've worked on my VTX a few times. I still miss the Catrike Pocket I had many years ago. It was one of the very early models and was super light, fast and comfortable!

      I have a catrike Trail, 559 and a 700. The Trail is the most nimble , the 559 the most comfortable and the 700 is far and away the fastest. I ride in New England where I live and in south Florida for four months in the winter. My riding buddy in Florida rode my 700 and loved it and went out and ordered a VTX. We trade off and ride each other’s trikes. I wore out the racing Schwalbe Durano tires too quickly (2 sets) and replaced them with Schwalbe Marathon plus…which are much more comfy than Duranos and wear so much better.they also slow me down 1-2 mph when going out full force. From personal experience riding both the VTX and 700 frequently on the same day I feel the VTX is slightly faster . It also has indirect steering which is very different from Catrikes. The stock VTX seat is much more comfortable also. The 700 seems more solidly constructed and more durable . It is also more readily serviceable as it is made in Orlando , parts are accessible and the folks at Catrike are awesome. Just call,the factory and a person answers the phone and directs you to the proper department and issues get resolved immediately. The VTX is also priced several thousand dollars higher than a 700 and susceptible,to,currency fluctuations. They are both incredibly fast and agile and a thrill to ride.the 700 with the slick Duranos is the equal to the VTX in speed but the tires make for a very harsh, hard ride. You can’t lose out with either. I can’t say that the VTX is worth the extra money. I’m a loyal Catrike customer as their products have been wonderful, reliable , and service has been superb.as an aside…I,will soon be 71 and ride a minimum of 200 miles per week and well over 10k per year. And I can bring it for an old codger . They are both winners.

      Greetings, Commander! Yep, we didn't know if we'd get a video out this week. Lots of rain and snow is making it hard to get out on the trikes. :) I started my triking adventures on a Greenspeed GT3 and have always liked the brand. I'd still like to get a chance to try a Greenspeed Aero, but they are rare in these parts!

    What a riot!!!
    i was thinking about You Fellas on Thursday when i was out on the Magnum!
    That extra weight, i feel, makes an ENORMOUS difference in this scenario; that said it would be a gas if You guys swapped bikes and did the same test.
    What about general comfort comparison?
    Namely the seats.
    Thanks for the great content!

    • @bikestrikesrazors
      @bikestrikesrazors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, Christopher! Glad to hear you're getting out and enjoying that Magnum! Have to say that the seat on the VTX is very comfortable, but still not as comfortable as the big mesh seat on that GTO. With the GTO's more upright seating position, it's also much easier to get a good view of what's happening around you, and it's better for taking in the scenery, which would be critical on a tour. Why tour if you can't see the sights? We'll have to try this again, and swap riders on the trikes! Thanks for watching!

    Nice effort Gentleman 😊, glad i`m not racing against you chaps , id be left in shame , i just bought a heavy rated trike for my overweight old truck driver heavy weight body 😢,
    on the flat with zero wind i manage to get the greenspeed magnum XL up to an ok cruising speed for me , but the slightest incline or headwind the old knees are really feeling it , no doubt if i was 100 pounds lighter id be doing a tad better, but life’s circumstances sometimes put you in a situation where you cant always live that better life style to look after yourself .
    Anyway , im thinking seriously about getting a bit of motor assist , as the other downer to having a heavy gross vehicle mass is that taking off from a dead stop is so slow , you just cannot put enough horsepower through the pedals to make even a moderately brisk take off happen , and that i think adds a bit of danger as sometimes you do need to move a little faster to get across that road or intersection.
    Thanks for sharing your videos .

      Hey, Mikldude! I always thought that being a cross-country trucker would be a cool job. Out on the open road, no boss over your shoulder, and every time I drive across country, I like it so much, I just want to keep going. I also have an unnatural attraction to truck stops. :) But it’s hard to not suffer physical issues from all that time on the road, and that’s if you’re lucky enough to not have issues with blood clots from all the hours sitting. I guess it’s like most careers- You take the bad with the good. No harm in exploring the wonders of E-assist. It seems to me that these days the vast majority of trikers have gone to some type of assist system. I’d personally like to get my hands on an E-assist trike just to try it out!

    I kind of wonder at the price point deference between the two trikes, is the slight advantage worth the money?

    • @bikestrikesrazors
      @bikestrikesrazors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for watching! Usually, the different types of trike (racing vs touring) doesn't really play into pricing. It's just that they are designed for different uses. You can get expensive examples of both. When you are looking at less expensive brands of trike, you will usually see the more upright and heavier styles, but I think that just because that style may take less manufacturing specialty design work.

    Still hoping to see you get your hands on an Aero. Was interesting to see all the trike records broken on an Aero by a 65 year old that were held previously by a 29 year old. One thing I would like to know is what trike previously held those records- they didn't mention it.

    I think a more evenly matched race would be between the Aero, 700 & VTX. Also a trike without the Internal Gear Hub which I believe the later model GT series did away with.

      LOL! We shot this in an airport community (Cameron Airpark Estates). The airport is right next to this neighborhood, and the pilots can land and taxi their aircraft right into their garages! Works well for racing as the streets are really big, long, runways (as long as we don't get run over by a plane). Yep, it's gotta be mucho costly to maintain cars and planes, and to afford a house in this community!

    • @Scarekrow24
      @Scarekrow24 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bikes, Trikes & Razors! I had no idea communities like that existed. It just goes to show that there is always something to learn. Thanks for the videos and reviews! Eventually, I would like to purchase a fat tire TAD as we have more opportunities for trail riding where I live. Some roads are trike friendly, but it's pretty rare that even a dedicated upright bike lane is provided.
